Hi, my name is M.E.R.255 and I've downloaded Lazy Shell v. 3.8.2 for my computer (Windows 7).
I always wanted to make a game, or at least my own version of a game, which is why I've downloaded the program... but I have no clue on how to use it.
The program looks really nice, but I have no clue on how to use it or where to start. I've never done anything like this before, but I would like to be able to edit the storyline (create an own story) replace main characters, replace enemies, bosses and more.

I hope I've posted the question in the right place, when not, then please forgive me. ^^

I've searched the internet and YouTube for answers, but didn't find any that really helped me. I don't even know how to insert my own character... I want Valentina to be one of the main characters by the way, and yeah, she needs a lot more frames for that, but I will take care of that once I know how to use the program.

The first problem is in the "Sprites" section. I can't add a new character and when I try removing all the molds and animations from one character, and wanting to create new molds, it won't really work. The mold will appear, but either empty where I can't right click on anything and upload my own image, or where I have to guess the "Subtile" number on every pixel.

When trying to just copy molds and edit the copy, the previous mold also will be replaced. =O

In short: I'm what some of you refer as a noob/newb or "a professional's nightmare".


So, if there is anything that I could read, or watch, any tutorials, or any help, I would be very thankful! ^^

I wouldn't know what... unless you need some more enemies (in the game) or sprites,.
I'm currently learning (how deviantART calls it) Pixel Art and am always trying out new things, mostly on SMRPG enemies, like Death Crusher or my beloved Mad Chomp,
but my favorite always going to be my General.

I let you use them, but only when I get your help in return.
If this isn't what I could offer... then I wouldn't know what. ^^"

Yeah... I didn't really explain everything all to well... but then again, I'm new to this stuff so I don't know how to tell you exactly what I want. ^^

Oh, and I ment that I've used the "Duplicate Mold" button and... tell you what, I'll just record the screen, add some text to it (questions in the video) and upload it on YouTube, and after I'm finished, I'll post the link in this thread.

It's not so easy for me, explaining what I want or what problems I have, without showing any pictures or a video.

So, I've learned a little more now (found out where to change the status icons and stuff), but I'm currently working on making a few spritesheets first (like Valentina), so I have some material first, before implenting it into the game.

Once I'm finished (or think that I'm finished), I could add a link to these spritesheets in here. I'm currently working at Valentina (okay, so far I have more extras, than important stuff, like having her in a bikini) and maybe some objects.

I'll try to be more serious and let her have her clothes back (she's not naked) plus give her sprites like in battle. ^^ You could rate what I've done so far though, or tell me some ideas you have.

It seems that when trying to import certain images (recolored by myself) they're not correctly displayed, while others with less colors work just fine. Is there a certain amount of colors that I can use? Or does it has to do with something else?

Ah, I see.
Sorry for not answering you earlier, but I was a little distracted lately. I've been talking with someone I've met on deviantART, who wants to help me make my own version of SMRPG (I want to make a sequel) and so far we've been discussing a little.

I may not know how the Lazy Shell program works, but I'm starting to understand that every field has a reason to be there. The one user I've met (name is virtualboy2558) helps me with the ideas and design ideas, and I try to make them come to life. Since I do need a lot of practise, it might take me a while, but I'll try as hard as I can.

This here is a image (400% zoom so you can see it) with chairs on it, made for a fast food restaurant that I'd like to make. I want to make it as realistic as possible.


If you like what you see, I'm going to make a lot more, including adding new animations to the main characters etc, and show you some of my spritesheets so you can use them, but only if you ask me to.


I'll be pretty much making sprites first and then trying to put them into the game, but thanks to the reply I have received from you (Yakibomb), I'll try to make sure that I won't exceed the limitation of 15 colors per image/frame.
I'm going to use the Mega Mushroom design by the way, so the red mushroom design shouldn't appear in the game I'm trying to make. ^^

I haven't really gotten any further with the program, because I kinda the need the BASICS.

Isn't there any thread that I could read, something like "Lazy Shell For Dummies", pretty much something for people who never done something like this before? I know I'm not someone who knows a lot in this stuff or is known very much by a higher member, but I'm wanting to create a game (a sequel to the game) and I'm wanting to create hundreds of new sprites that I would let you use in your games (you help me, I help you) so I would really appreciate your help.

No, I'm not one of those guys who say "I'll do this" and then after a week I'll give up, otherwise I wouldn't have been a website administrator for 3 years. Would have been 4 if I wouldn't have retired because of putting up with all the problems on the internet and dealing with the ones outside of the "virtual life".


All I'm asking you is to guide me to the right direction, so I can get started. ^^
The only experience I got, that comes a little close to using a program like this, is the RPGVX Maker, where I've used switches and had events in it, but all I had to do there was right click on a tile and add a character or event to it. The Lazy Shell program seems a lot bigger and works differently, so I'm kinda lost there.


Here's what I do know (thanks to you):
- Sprites/Images shouldn't contain more than 15 colors + transparent
- where to change a sprite or "mold" of a character.
- that you can export and import images (characters, levels, ...)
- that you can change the names of a few things (allies, levels)


Things I don't know:
- Everything else =/


What I'm wanting to make/have (my version of the game):
- Replace Mallow with my version of Valentina. (every image as 15 or less colors)
- Add Luigi (playable or just as a non-playable character)
- Add many non-playable characters from other games like Bombette.
- have new levels and new buildings like a fast food restaurant, mall
- I also want to add new bosses, enemies, and even a train
- minigames
- new emotions to playable and non-playable characters
- and much more


I know that I'm thinking pretty big for someone who doesn't even know how to use the program, but I don't care if it would take me more than a year to complete, as long as I know how. That's just the way I am. ^^

UPDATE: Okay, I've received help from another member of this community/forum and he showed me how you can place a character onto the map, so now I know one of these things that I just couldn't figure out. This was much simpler than I thought, I just didn't know where to look.

I guess now that I know that much, I might be able to learn more from the "how to" thread, but if I'll be able to understand them completely, is another thing. ^^
I may need to find out a few more things to understand what I'm searching for, for the other topics, that's why.

Well, I figured it might be better if I ask a question in here, then keep creating new threads when I don't need to.
I can't really answer your questions since I'm new to ROM hacking itself, but it's starting to make sense to me now, on how to use the program.

This question might be tough to answer though...


Is it possible to remove/replace the opening scene, when starting a new game?


I'm not so familiar with several things yet, so I do not know if it's possible or not, BUT it seems to me that you may have to do something in the EVENT SCRIPTS section...

Hmm, so I guess so far it's not possible to remove/replace the scene...

You said that the graphics have been located, so does that mean I could edit those somewhere? Or not just yet?

Oh, and I just wanted to say, that this program is awesome! It's much more fun when you start understanding it better.


I hate to say this, but either it is me, or I noticed two things that do not work on the program (on my computer, or ROM)= I can't listen to the AUDIO tracks (Playback), and when exporting one to a .wav file, I can't open it either.

The other thing, which isn't a problem, but what I have noticed, is that in the ITEMS sections, there are two "Buy only, no selling" fields. Is there a reason for that, or are there two by mistake?^^
I'm using Lazy Shell 3.8.2, my laptop is Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit operating system.
It's not like I'm wanting to ask about these things for fun, I just think that reporting is important for improving something (like when I used to do web development and created a design for a website, I was glad when someone reported me issues so I could fix them, even though it bothered me a little bit because I'm always trying to make sure, that everything was correct in the first place).

Wow, I didn't know about this folder before, I just had the program by itself. This has really a lot in it. Did you make all that? Because that is so amazing! Unfortanetly, I'm not very good with ROM hacking and everything so it will take me a long time to figure everything out, but I'm really glad for all of your help!

I wonder how many people know about this program and being able to edit this wonderful game, because I'm sure more should know about it!

To the "buy only, no selling": Since they don't clear the same bits, but do the same thing. It already says that in "help" (when hovering the fields), so I guess there isn't much wrong with that. The only thing that could be done (for experts) is to say which of them clears what bits.


SOLVED: I was right, it was a bad ROM that I've downloaded a long time ago! I tried a some out and I found one where I have playback when playing the Sound Effects on MUSIC!


Well, since I've already written down so much, maybe I could write a few more questions (that don't have to be answered right away):
Is it possible to walk as someone else than Mario, without removing him from the team? Like Booster's Tower the 8-bit version. How did that work?
Another question would be, if it is possible to change the look of a character for battle. Like, Geno in a different color, or Mario without a hat?


ADDED QUESTION: Well, since I haven't received any answers to my questions yet, probably because it's around Christmas time or because of another reason, I'll just add a few questions. By the way, I would like to receive at least SOME answers, also those who don't really answer all of that, just to let me know that you guys don't just ignore my reply.
You have How To threads, which may make sense to people who know what does what already, but don't really help me yet since I'm still at the start... so far, my biggest issue is... what does memore mean, and how do you properly make an event, like just talking to someone and not having this person disappear afterwards!
I have only experience with website programming, meaning I heard about if-else, loops (for, while), switches (pretty much the same as if-else for me) and other stuff, but I never encountered "memory" in something before.



One question that goes to the community though (and isn't a "How do I" question):
I'm trying to make like a sequel to the game with someone else. I'm wanting to create a lot of new sprites (more than recolors, actually creating and/or editing) and I wanted to know if I should maybe make a thread (or post it in one) where I show that stuff to you and let you use it for your games, so I can give you something back in return for helping me out so much. ^^


Once again, I'm really glad for receiving all of your help, and that goes to everyone!^^

PS: I wouldn't mind if my older topics got deleted, to clear up more space and make it easier to find the topics you need, so go ahead and delete them. First of all, WOW, that's a high level there!^^

But now to a question that is very important to me. =O
Is it possible to edit Effects? I'm talking about like, replace Mushroom and Scarecrow and make new Effects? Don't come here with "not possibe" because I know that nothing has to be "impossible". ^^
What I had in mind sounds kinda funny, but okay, two Effects called "love" and "fat" (yep, sounds strange), where there are random times where the character can't attack, and the other one is where the character changes into a fat version where they lose speed, their attacks do less damage, and it raises their defense.

I was wondering... are there some EVENTS or so that I would have to edit, to make it do something different? Like an event where scarecrow turns the characters into a scarecrow, but instead acts like fear, where the character does something different while standing and the attack changes as well?

Assembly hacking? I don't even know what that means. Do I have to edit a file in the smrpg_docs folder? Oh, and I guess I finally figured out what memory is. Isn't it something like a variable with a value set to it, which you can use in a IF clause like uh if(men 7000=1){run dialouge[17];return;}
Well something like that, but just pretty much a "switch" or how I remember it.

Wow, you guys really have some nice videos and sprites! ^^
I like the Fire enemies (Goomba as example) a lot, but Yakibomb's blue Yoshi amazed me, especially the fact that the sprites look so great. =O

Well, a guy called virtualboy2558 and I are wanting to make more like a "sequel" to SMRPG, and I still need help with Lazy Shell, but I thought it would be good if I would show you some of the stuff I've made so far.

I made some enemies and other stuff a while back (not sure what should appear in the game) which I've edited again since I've found out that there's a color limitation (so everything you see should have 15 or less colors), but I'll let you use them if you guys continue helping me out with the program. ^^ I'll create complete animations (molds/sprites) so they can be used in the game, but I'm not sure which ones I'm going to finish.

This is still way above my head, so I don't think I'm ready for that yet. I have no clue what all the numbers and letter in those files mean, nor how they can be used to change the ROM.

I haven't found a tutorial on that website yet, probably because I don't know what to enter into the search bar. I really appreciate all the help and can't wait for v3.9.0. I had some troubles with the monsters, like I've edited them but didn't just recolorize them. Like I thought if I would replace Chomp Chomp with this, I would still have a regular Chomp and my Mad Chomp (it has 15 colors + 1 transparent):

It works, though for some reason 1-2 colors are displayed black in battle, like a part of his tongue (color 800000). =/ Are there colors that can't be used? Also it seems that Chomp and Chomp Chomp use the same graphicSet, and that the other one just uses a different pallete set.
It seems that that happens on every character that I try to give a different pallete set! Just like Bandana Dark, who has no changes, but uses different colors!
Ont he left is Bandana Dark (replaced Bandana Blue) in SPRITES, and on the right in an actual battle (also in MONSTERS the same thing):

Why is that happening? The color pallete of this character is:
181818, 686868, 909090, 808080, 505050, 604040, 300000, 180000, 202020, 101010, 101010,101010, 200010, 080000, 080000
Another thing is, I tried to replace Machine Made Yardovich with Mad Chomp, which worked fine in SPRITES, but NOT in battle (uses Yardovich's regular attacks and has his shape), which you could already see on the bottom right in MONSTERS (that Mad Chomp looked strange, compared to SPRITES).
Well, you said the next version of the program will make much easier to import sprites, so does that mean that something like this could exist in the game, but not change the other/original crab? I mean like, replace an enemy like Machine Made ones, and replace it with the animation and graphicSet?


I also encountered a little problem in the program, in the DIALOGUE section:
I tried to give a custom (handmade) symbol/letter a key, but it didn't really work, or caused some "error". This is my dialogue graphic:

I tried to give ä (german letter) the key ä. After I had saved the keystroke table and loaded it then, it suddently had the key ! instead. And the ones after it (öüß) have now #-´, while the first line has no keystrokes anymore, also ( ) (if they ever had any).
What happend there? Could it be because I tried a few things out on that copy of the ROM, and it's normal to encounter things like these when editing a copy? Or not?


Hope you don't mind when I bring these things up. I'm still a little curious if there are things that I can and can't do, or shouldn't do (like having a 32-bit character in a 16-bit game). Plus if there are some things that need to be fixed, I'd like to report any issues so they're not unnoticed and therefore will remain in the program.


Oh, and I like Bahamut, haha. Really funny how he talks in your image! ^^

I now reopened the editor, and now the character looks in SPRITES and MONSTERS the same way (with the same error). Now to palletes... second row? There is only one row of colors in SPRITES for each character, what do you mean with second row? Here's an image that shows what I'm talking about.

Where is a second row of colors there?

Oh and I just want to be sure on this one:
You mean that, even though the crab has more spikes and lines, basically doesn't has an 100% identical shape, I won't have to adjust the gpahicSet in the new version?

This is what I mean, as example. The first one is original, the second one is edited by me.

Well, since you're releasing the new version, it wouldn't make much sense bothering you with the current problems that might be lifted in the new version. ^^

I guess one thing, that I would probably ask you later, is how you could display a NPC to do something different while standing. I mean like... stand, but use a different mold for that, with a different palette set (like, have a NPC standing looking like Bowser's pose, colored in palette set 2). I was just wondering if you could recolor a NPC in SPRITES (like make a few sets) without having to replace other characters to display someone in a different color.
Like, having a red Toad and green Toad in one, instead of having two SPRITES characters where red Toad and green Toad are seperate.
A better example would be:
Have Bowser walking around normally, and having Bowser walk around with... sunglasses, but have him wear those in a few of his molds (in SPRITES), instead of replacing a character and have him wear sun glasses there.

I don't expect a reply soon, since some of you (especially you) are very busy (plus New Year's Eve is coming up), so I wouldn't mind receiving an answer to that more than a few days from now (but I would appreciate receiving an answer at all to that =O). ^^

First of all, they look great! =O
I couldn't figure out how to display characters from the front yet...

Well, let's see what I can say about it (criticism).
I don't really see anything wrong with the Boo Buddy, so I can't really say anything about that.

To Magikoopa: First I wanted to say "A looks better" but B) also looks close to the original. Wow that's a tough one. Personally, I would go with A)'s face... but B)'s body seems more correct, because you can see the hands and the size seems more correct.

So really, B) looks better then A) to me.

Seriously, how did you made those? Plain skill, or are there some ways/tricks to accomplish something like that?

It is very interesting how you manged to create this, I should try doing so with another character too, but probably tomorrow, since it's pretty late where I'm at. ^^

Well, since I guess it's okay to post this, I'm working on Valentina, and I'm wanting to turn her into a main character/ally, but she does look a little different.
Okay, I admit, maybe I have overdone it on her a little (you know what I'm talking about), but I really like her that way. I'm not so sure if it looks alright though...



There are still many things that need to be improved, like her arm and that she shouldn't stand with one leg angled, because of the walking movement that I need to "make". I'm also not sure about the hair... not sure if the hair style if good, or if the hair should look differently on the backside.

I have the normal version 3 times (always different shoes), not really sure which looks best (so far)...

You may have noticed that I gave her a few costumes. I actually made about 20 before I changed her again.

Hope her current costume (NORMAL) looks alright. I'm wanting to make a game (will take forever, since I barely know how to do anything) and I want the characters to change their clothes... but I wonder if that's even possible (not for battle, maybe just for going to bed or the Shy "Girl" costume for a sidequest). The Shy "Girl" costume (backside) may need some editing with the shading on the head...


By the way, I spent about a month or so to create this, since I kept editing her and kept learning how to do new things, so don't think I was able to make this right away. ^^
And yes, I do have her naked as well (bacause it says NAKED in one place), but I didn't display her, because I'm not sure who would be offended by something like that (is useful for making new costumes).


Oh, I completely forgot: I added different emotions because I would like to have more for different occasions in the game, but not all of them. Hope you like them, and I wouldn't mind making some more, or try some for other characters.
