Maybe when the game goes to press, it is a sparse file, and the data isn't cleared between pressings.

Replace your noisy fans. Just do it. Fans are really really cheap. Components are not.

With the anomymization of the board, this place has degraded worse than ||board.

I always thought it was that other place that was trying to rip off 4chan, not this one.

And if there's any post that will result in a ban, it'll be this one

Edit: I've changed my mind. There is no way in hell anything can rival the crappiness which is ||board. Nothing can justify such suckiness, not even Doom music.

Edit #2: I made this post specifically after reading the "Link is gay because he has two earrings" thread.

There is no "2chan". There's 2ch, and Futaba-chan. One is the real "2chan", the other is the Japanese board that 4chan cloned.

I've heard claims that 2ch is like the Japanese version of the Something Awful forums, times 100. Does that sound correct?

Does this place ever get any attempted spam?
Recently I got crap on my message board where the subject line was a series of gibberish containing what appeared to be a stock ticker symbol name, then the body of the message said "Sorfy plarse \ Wrogn ctaeggry.p.. \ wil be acrrful".
This is very different than the usual spam where they actually try to send you to a URL.
Aside from the ever-useless IP bans, or disallowing guest posting, what ways could I try to stop these botnet assholes?

I would assume that any well-designed bot would claim to be Internet Explorer. Hell, when I use wget on a blocked site, I just forge its user agent to identify as IE.

The two things I did on my board (Punbb) to try to stop spam:
#1: The time zone trick! Punbb asks users who register for their time zone. The prompt defaults to UTC-12. UTC-12 is a nautical time zone which only applies to the ocean and uninhabited areas. So any time someone registers with UTC-12 as their time zone, give an error message.
#2: Just reject any guest including http:// or www. in their posts.

Unfortunately, now the spammers aren't even plugging websites anymore, so that shoots out #2.

I've seen some sites use invisible fields which if filled make the post invalid, but I don't think that trick would work with the smarter bots.

Now I get more spams that human posts. It's so lonely at Dwedit's board...

Taskbar Shuffle (row #2, column #2) is a really great program to have, drag your taskbar entries around!

Contents: Wifi, Ethernet disconnected, sound volume, remove hardware
Charging, Taskbar Shuffle, Daemon Tools, Avast!
Notebook Hardware Controls, Sysinternals Process Explorer (cpu usage meter in tray)

Now if this was a "Post your Quicklaunch Bar" thread, then a few years ago, mine would be several screens large. I decided to put basically every program from the start menu I might use into the quicklaunch bar. (still sized the bar small so only 8 icons are visible, it's the >> chevron where all the action is at!)

(edit: Fixed image, was posted in a restricted area before)

Dude, you can just Guest-upload files to my message board. Anything to not have to sit through those goddamn Megaupload-type sites.

www.dwedit.org/dwedit_board

Don't abuse it though, or I'll remove that capability.

I joined Acmlm's board to plug Rom Corruptor.
http://acmlm.cjb.net:2/boardb/thread.php?id=3066
Yes, that was back before they allowed users to upload avatars. I don't even remember what avatar I would have used then.

I never had a postcount exceed 100 on any incarnation of the board.

Wow... Perfect with eyes closed, and I don't even use homekeys or other stupid touchtyping methods.

From what I've seen, it would be both possible and advantageous to make an extension for Firefox to make YouTube play on Windows Media Player instead of Flash Player. Now I'm guessing you're probably thinking "Ewwwww... Micro$oft Player...Blech!", but Flash Player is the real CPU hog here. With Windows Media Player, you get the awesome and efficient ffdshow codec, combined with the speed advantages of an overlay surface.
The results speak for themselves, when I tested Windows Media Player, CPU usage was at 5% for firefox, using YouTube's flash-based player, CPU usage was 40%! So yeah, Flash Player is 8 times slower than Windows Media Player (decoding with ffdshow).
The requirements? You need ffdshow and an FLV Splitter, and now the Windows Media Player plugin for firefox will be able to play FLV files streamed off YouTube.

Only real problem here is that I don't have a clue how to actually make a Firefox extension which would intercept the YouTube pages, and replace the flash-based player with a WMP based one.

*yes, I know it's really libavcodec doing all the real work here, but I'm still giving credit to ffdshow anyway.

You can't use the words "Majority" and "Pay for music" in the same sentence.
