In order to find out, download it, then play around with it. |

Well here's what I've got so far on the music document. It's not entirely complete, but it's at least something:

Haha.
That looks like something I'd make with Mario Paint. |

I just took a quick listen. Opens up really nice in those first four measures, giving something of a "sit down and I'll tell you a story" kind of feel, and then the melody just kind of meanders aimlessly. Could use an ending, but I'm assuming it was intended to be repeated. About halfway, the song changes using higher notes and, and there was a good buildup going at that point, and upon anticipating some kind of climax, it kind of fizzles.
Anyway, about developing piano skills, find a way practice proper fingering more than anything, and this is when formal musical training becomes important. One way of doing this is looking at those little 1-5 numbers placed over notes on sheet music. I suppose you could experiment with different fingering combination for certain melodic motifs until you find the best sounding one, but the problem with that is that there might be better ones than the one you think is the best. I too first played by ear, which was good because melodic and harmonic intervals became easy to recognise, but because I had little proper fingering for a long time, I played notes sloppily (e.g, certain notes would be pressed longer/shorter and harder/softer than they should be) and thus developed a poor sense of rhythm. As for note reading, sequencing helped me with that more than anything. The more I composed and arranged music in notation programs, the easier the notes were to recognize, as did figuring at which notes belonged in which key. Good for you improving by immitating Bach, learning (or ripping off in someform or another) from the masters is one of the best steps toward improving methods of musical composition. |

Actually, that's a good question. Would be interesting if each character had their own special power, though it could potentially make some characters more useful than others in more contexts than not.
Anyway, I'm very impressed by this select screen. Very orienting and not too gimmicky in the least. Character portrayals look gorgeous. Do keep up the great work! |

Posted by S.N.N. Whenever I see Super Mario trodding around in front of absolutlely gorgeous backgrounds, I can't help to think of replacing a cartoon Mario with someone more appropriate for atmosphere, like a humble knight akin to the journeyman from Faxanadu. Although if one did that it wouldn't really be a Mario game anymore, and then a massive amount of commitment might have to made in order to redefine the game as a result. A minor personal lament, I suppose. Good luck with the hack, and I'm glad you took the effort into making music for it, though I am unable to hear it at the moment. |

LOL @ the "terminator" ritual.
As for me, I set a two alarms on my watch, one for 7:20 and a second for 7:40. The second alarm is for in case I wake up and feel crappy from the first one, I can hope to get a good short rest and hopefully wake up in a more mentally orienting fashion. On a good day I'll go through a workout routine before hitting the shower. After a quick shower, I eat a bowl of cereal and whatever fruit or vegetable is lying around and then walk a good 15 minutes to school. |

Nice to see the all the teams in the Central get extra competitive this year (except Nashville). The teams out here have been playing total crap here in the Pacific, and only recently have the Ducks shown life. Saw this play the other night during the last game and I still can't believe it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfuN0mUDYdI I really don't how a fan could be too disappointed with the Red Wings over the last 15 years, they've had the best run organisation in the league for well over a decade, well except maybe when Dave Lewis was coaching. But even then, Detroit was still a top seeded team. |

It appears that I've found enemy coding for the alleged unused enemy in Simon's Quest. I was checking to see which bytes corresponded to which enemies by replacing enemies in the game with other enemies. While doing so, I came across this: No other sprite animation fits the code, suggesting that this is unmistakably the coding used for the enemy. The sprite only displays correctly in the Laruba mansion, and based on its constant jumping, it seems to be based more on the fleaman than anything. As for it actually appearing in the game somewhere, I've checked through all the enemy locations in the game, and I have found it nowhere, so it seems highly probable that it doesn't appear anywhere in the game. Not really a rom hack, but I thought this might be worth sharing. |

Posted by optomonPosted by Dr. Hell Ignore that. Now that I'm in a more human state, I can safely and coherently express that I have no real intention of making a Castlevania 2 hack. So you don't have to worry about anything. |

Hmm... ineresting, I've never really thought of changing Simon himself much. I think I changed him once on accident. Anyway, I've never seen any document on such. Shouldn't be too tough to find out though.
Typically, a good of finding the location of such data is to check routines that involve pushing certain controller buttons, and as far as I can tell with the NES, its zero page LDA F5 or F7. In hex, it appears something like as A5 F7 29 XX, with XX being a value for certain buttons. Beyond those, you can find things that happen if you push that button. |

Small update on this piece, I added another music track to the game out of sheer boredom, it plays in the towns.
Also, the zelda music document had some erroneous information on it, particulary the part on notation. Also, I think when you add C1 to a note, it doesn't actually make it a 3/8 note, it seems to just completely mess up the whole track. |

Doc, you do realise that if you suck me into making a Castlevania hack, it's going to take a long ass time to do it and it will have to be infinitely great. Like far more extensive than Chorus of Mysteries.
As for why there is less custom SNES music in hacks, I have no idea really. Maybe people are just afraid to try it out. I can't even think of any real examples of it. It would be interesting to see how much more challenging it could be than NES music. |

You know, I just realised how difficult it is to objectively determine what the greatest rom hack is. I haven't played through most hacks. There seem to be 5 qualities that can be changed in a game- programming, control, level design, graphics, and sound. Whichever games extensively alters any of these elements the most for the better would seem to be the best. Modifying the games programming seems to be the most impressive feat.
If I wanted to determine which one I felt was the best, I'd probably have to play these games and see for myself. I admit that I haven't played too many of them though. |
