Ah, a Blaster Master hack. I liked Jig's game too.

My first impression of the black ground is that it looks unnatural, and a lot of the graphics are patterned in straight lines, which kind of bothers me. Have you tried making the ground all stone texture maybe? The castle doors and grass look great, though. I'd be very interested in seeing the theme ideas for the other stages.

I might have interest in this one too, probably in the field of sound/music. It depends on what I do with my life and the success of Chorus of Mysteries.

Dr. Mario, I'd love to see you in a cowboy outfit doing those cigarette poses.

Anyway, here's me!

Me after a long night of hacking.

Me outside with weird plants in the background.

Proud to be a euro mutt.

(Real names pending?)

Song titles, eh... I remember us briefly discussing this.

I think track 1 I dubbed as the "migdnight mambo" , though that might be inappropriate. Track 2 would certainly be along the lines of "come in if you dare". Track 3, simply "chessboard".

The rest, don't know yet, I'll have to make something up later.

Critiques of the soundtrack would be very highly appreciated.

The only thing I ever really did was heavily abuse my Game Genie.

Honesty, I did more stuff with that than I ever did with anything else. I wish I still had it (GB), too, because it was a lot of fun...

Like originally discovering a debug mode in Game&Watch Gallery 3, and finding out that "7" will let you walk over pits/water in Link's Awakening...

It was Game Genie for me too. Used it to find hidden worlds in games like Metroid and Legend of Zelda and make it feel like I was playing a new game. Also in Sim City, I used it to make very bizarre tweaks in the game. One code did scores of weird things... it made all these buildings suddenly and randomly appear all over the place, the population would change erratically from like 1000 to something like &4#99?2 and the music even changed. The results remained saved to the city after not using game genie.

Keep up the good work. After you have more free time I recommend finding a way to edit the levels.

If you plan to edit the NSF, will you make original music or attempt to incorporate some Halo themed music?

American... both parents can trace ancestry back to settlers. It's kind of cool, my mom's maiden name is Davis and I'm directly related to Jefferson Davis (president of the Confederacy during the Civil War ).

I have a similar background, also American tracing back to early settlers, except my last name is Lincoln, and I am near directly related to Abraham Lincoln, president of the Union during the Civil War (he has no direct descendant).

Man, Predator was such a bad game.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this project comes along, how it might turn a crappy game into a good game.

Good topic.

The rom hacking scene could always use plenty of constructive criticism. A lot of the "insane difficulty" hacks are just not worth anyones time except for possibly the person who created them for their own amusement, probably after testing the game while they were designing it for long periods of time. I don't really treat them as decent rom hacks.

I know what you mean by those Zelda 2 hacks... the ice-penguin ones (yeah, I'll use a name). I started playing the "easy" version and turned it off after dying quickly everywhere I went, dying in two or three hits, enemies that are first seen taking as many as 10 or 20 hits. Just plain sadistic... well, maybe I'm being harsh, I take that back, and what the author may not realise what a monster he's created for everyone else to enjoy. A lot of games are typically riddled with various forms of sadistic level design, obscenities that are poor attempts at humor, and general artistic mediocrity.

I'm going to show a few examples that I'm not afraid to criticise.

Unfair difficulty, like trying to jump across a pit at the end of the level that has to be timed just exactly perfectly:

People who make the backgrounds really bright and platforms really dark:

Sadistic text in games, such as this "you suck" replacing "game over" at what seems to be a fairly normal and otherwise enjoyable hack. Not too evil, but it makes me not want to play the game:

I think there should be more to this topic, e.g. what we like in rom hacks. I come around to that later.

Well, I don't know if you've noticed but this is a rom hacking community, and people here value creativity in rom hacking, whether it is done for free or not has nothing to do with it. I think we have every right to complain about what they don't like in rom hacks. Just like you said, people will like things and people won't. We have every right to encourage and discourage what we see in people's work. And I know that not everyone can be pleased with a hack, but you can always make an effort to please more people than not. We strongly encourage people to do what we think is better and there is really nothing wrong with that.

For example... I'm going to complain about you: don't tell people to "shut the F*CK up". I don't care how open-minded you think you are, it's a very immature and hostile way to address someone's opinions and I'll just lose respect for you. I highly discourage you to do such in the future before somebody treats it as an attack and gives you a hard time.

Yeah, the video is retarded propaganda, but it at leasts puts to light the inevitable, albeit in a very exaggerated fear-mongering way.

Explosive population growth and technological advancement is nothing new, unless you consider 300 years ago as new. Population of the planet went from like 1.5 billion in 1900 to 6 billion in 2000.

As for China and India with their explosively ambitious economies and billions of people they will inevitably outcompete certain economic sectors that were once monopolized by Western countries. Just got to find ways to outcompete them back. And don't worry too much, America, they've still got plenty of problems of their own to cope with, namely the gazillions of poor people they're tempted to sweep under the rug.

The bit on the computers having more computing power than the human brain (and then later the human race) made me laugh. It's obvious they are trying to provoke some kind of "oh know computers will over run humanity one day" feeling.

@ Fire Phoenix : Why are you running? That looked really good. Get back in here and give me some background on this game. I don't even know if that is your hack. I'm not up to date with SMW hacks, so I don't even know what features were new to the scene, if any. The background in the level is very original, and the arch bridge things look great.

Ooooh, I love F-Zero X. (Points to avatar)

I'm mildly interested in participating, but too busy at the moment. Building an editor sounds like very hard work and I was thinking of making one someday. If anything it would be nice to learn the process and test it out at the same time.

I'd say I'm a 5 or 6.

This was a little more complicated to pull off than it looks. Hopefully it turns out to be something more than a graphics hack.

The rabbit does run on all fours, although I've only animated two feet for it. The dimensions I believe are 3/2 Link's width and 3/4 Link's height (including the ears). The rabbit in the elevator shot is how you see it normally stand up. The lunging rabbit in the second shot is in attack mode. I plan to make further changes and try to find find ways it can attack and defend that Link couldn't.

As to what I'm doing with the game, I can't really say. I'm kind of just making this stuff up as I'm going along. Ideally, I want to make an entirely new game out of Zelda 2, but I haven't really looked through the game's data that much yet.

Ducks are my team, and always will be. They've made it to round three for the third time in four seasons, and this time hopefully with the cup. But man, did they ever get dealt a 5-0 ass whooping on home ice by Detroit tonight.

Anyone else this hardcore? This is currently me with my overgrown PO beard of devotion:
