To facepalm or not to facepalm, that is the question.

We quite apparently have a majority. KP, would you do the honours and recreate the thread?

Stark was the only admin not in favour of it, actually, and although there was discussion on making the thread, albeit in IRC, ironically there was no discussion about staffing the thread

At any rate, discussion is over and thread is on.

I can do brainstorming, and I've done some level design as well, though I'm not particularly gifted or anythign at that.

So, if we can change the patch server, then does that mean there will eventually be a way (or documention thereon) to host our own patch servers? This would be useful for group projects, for example, to share level edits / etc in private while the hack is in progress

so, by .dat, do you mean it'd be possible to upload, say, a specific level/area/however you define it, and that section can then be imported to any other ROM, or event scripts or whatever? Nice!

The only other suggestion I'd have is a 'related document' handler, so you can, for example, host a .txt file or .asm file to a team server so that people can view/distribute it within the team without having to use an external service to that end

Pretty cool, but I'm going to be picky and note that the sandstorm's graphics are a little screwy.

NOTICE BY GIANGURGOLO:
I am currently answering every single question posted in this thread, which will be added to the FAQ at the end of the readme.txt file included with the editor and accessible here. Pay attention to this text file in the future which will include commonly asked questions, such as "Why aren't my NPCs showing in the level?" Please continue asking questions in this thread as people have been doing so far, and I will try to continue answering them.

So, for anyone new to SMRPG hacking, as every single one of you excepting omega and giangurgolo is, this is the thread where you can ask questions about how to do stuff that may not be easy or obvious at first. Of course, there are some exceptions. Posts requesting stupid things like how you find the ROM or where you get it, etc. will be deleted at any moderator's discretion. If a question you had was deleted, do not repost it.

Post 'em here! General common-sense rules apply, and if you are going to quote someone, please remove the images from your post, huge quotes are not fun to try and read through.

Since this did work once before on Incarnation two, I'm going to use Juggling Joker's old method here frmo SMW hacking.

OKAY, LISTEN UP!

If you're going to make a thread here, try and add the following into the thread title as needed, so that it's a little easier to sort out the morass of threads that are going to inevitably sprout up.

[56K] - If the thread contains or is likely to contain a large number of images or youtubes, add this to the thread to try and warn people with slower connections

[HOWTO] - Got a great tutorial? Add this to the thread name! If enough [HOWTO]s get posted, then a thread with links to all of them may become possible!

[QUESTION] - Need help with something a little too advanced for the help thread? Add this to the thread title!

[RELEASE] - This should really be obvious.

[DEMO] - This too- got a demo link? Post this.

[SS],[VIDEO] - Again, if you have screenshots or videos, tag the thread with these!

[SUGGESTION] Got a suggestion for the SMRPG forum? Add this to the thread name!

[ASM] - If the thread contains code or is programming-related, add this to the thread title.

EXAMPLES:

Mario's Wild Ride [SS] [RELEASE] - Someone made a game, released it, and tagged the thread that there were screenshots and a link to the ips.

Making Mario jump differently [ASM] [QUESTION] - The thread title says it all.

Got any other tag ideas? Post Them!

No, the editor doesnt support expanding of rom data beyond the original 4 megs because the SA-1 chip can't address beyond 4 megs (pretty sure about this, but not 100%). Besides, if anyone can use up the original 512 areas I will be very impressed

Actually, the SA-1 contains bankswitching hardware allowing it to access up to 8MBytes of ROM. I'd have to double-check though whether that was 65c816-only though, or if the SA-1 can also access the upper 4 MBytes.

Tales of Phantasia used it, although there it was only 6MBytes of 8 actually implemented. That said, in order to support 6mbytes a system would also be able to support 8 due to bit widths and power of two.
