- When picking tiles, you click one tile inside the picker and click another tile in quick
succession, it brings up the TSA editor. Rather annoying when you click on the wrong tile,
because I often click on the intended tile right after that.

- Opening the palette editor opens up the palette saved for that level. Which means if you
change it after loading the level, and load up the palette editor, it loads up the
previous (saved) palette, not the palette you just changed it to.

Fixed.

- When you double click a tile to edit in the TSA editor, that tile you chose doesn't show
changes real-time while in the TSA editor. The rest of them do, however.

I looked at this for a little bit and cannot for the life of me figure out why it's not updating the tile as you draw on it. I'll continue looking into the issue. Could you send me the project and rom that the rom/project related errors happen on? thanks.

/sigh I really wish I could have finished this.

Here's the rom: https://sites.google.com/site/dahrkdaiz/Reuben.nes
Here's the open source project code: http://code.google.com/p/reuben-smb3/
Written in C#, open source, someone with the skill and time could easily finish this editor.

I've got to say, this is incredibly impressive! I've been studying this code and I get all warm and squishy inside being familiar with this. Though see it in readable ASM sure beats reading it in a hex editor like I did lol. Great job southbird and I thank you so much!

Edit: How southbird, would you possibly give us the best method "blank out" existing levels and maps and use NoDice to start fresh? Thanks!

Before you freak out, this is not a definite sequel hop from the original Mario Adventure. This isn't even a planned project. This is more or less some toying around with the SMB3 disassembly by southbird.

I'm hosting the project on Google Code under svn repository. This will allow incremental changes to the SMB3 assembly to be tracked, merged and enable revert breaking changes.

You can check out the project @ http://code.google.com/p/smb3project/
I'm the only one that can make commits for the time being, but I invite everyone to check it out and keep track of the changes I make to SMB3. I will try to include comments so everyone knows what I've changed.

The project includes a Visual Studio solution that allows editing all of the .ASM files in a single project. the batch file included by southbird has been modified to execute a ROM Merger. Since southbird's assembly is set to include hard-coded level data, I merge changes tot he assembly with a working rom so I can use the working rom for level modifications and the assembled rom from ASM changes and have everything merge nice and neat.

Unfortunately Reuben seems to be a abandoned project

Ninja Mushroom

Ninja Mario

Let's do this

Wall clinging

Wall jumping

While we're at it, watch this, ducking under a pipe

No more "slide through half the level during a TAS" trick:

I really thought about it. The biggest issue I have at the moment is the wings require the extra 8x16 tile that appears as the tail for Raccoon Mario, which is fine until I have to draw the swimming animation, then I need that bottom tile or the feet instead, making things rather difficult.

I do have one open slot for another power up though. What should it be?

I haven't decided on releasing a demo or not. I will definitely give out private demo's, but honestly I want to limit exposure so people can enjoy all the surprises in store for this hack.

At this rate, it may happen sooner than 2014, but I may pad the game with more content if I get ahead of schedule.

Just a quick update:

Golden Leaf:

Fire Fox Mario:

And just to show that it's not a replacment:

That brings the power count to a total of 3 returning, 1 modified and 5 brand new to the game!

Whatever file you're adding the code to, look for "unused". southbird marked out chunks of code that are unused. simply comment that code with (use ; to comment code) and compile and test to make sure the code you removed doesn't cause problems. Do note, the rom is still pretty packed so you may have to give up parts of the game for your own stuff (for example I removed all laser code and Kuribo's shoe code).

Mineyl: I've actually thought about this suggestion and this is going to be pretty though to implement. The problem being since there's no level "completion", it's hard to know when a coin is collected for a specific level (it uses x/y coordinates as flags at the moment). I will think of someway to indicate it as it will definitely be irritating to those looking for the last coins without knowing where to find them.

The start of the "Challenge" levels begins. Challenge levels are special levels with strange rules in order to complete, inspired by the original "Desert Dares" in Mario Adventure, these levels are meant to be oddities and somewhat short. They aren't required, but if you complete them, you get a lot of rewards.

So for this first one, you play SMB's 1-1 with an extended ending. The catch? The right button is constantly held down. Left doesn't work at all. It's these kinds of "bizarre rules" I'll use for these kinds of levels, just to have fun.

Edit: Well it's getting close to that time. I'm going to need some dedicated beta testers to start playing through the hack and note bugs, make suggestions, judge difficulty etc. If you're interested, send me a PM. I'm only going be able to pick a few, but I need people who will play regular updates.
