It would appear that Rockman 2 Gray Zone is finished, so I thought I'd post to let everyone know. The IPS can be found via the following link:

http://rg20.web.fc2.com/grayarea.html

This is a nice hack, and from what I've played so far... it provides a real nice challenge.

I was planning on doing a playthrough of this game once the final version came out. Thanks, amarcum81!

No prob! Now if Rockman: Mind Roar and Rockman: Abnormality would just get completed, I'd be a happy man!

I stayed up all night last night playing through this hack. It's a great play. Not quite as hard as RNC (No Constancy) but it'll still make you want to pull your hair out. The Wily stages seems to be where the hacker really tuned up the difficulty, as the robot master stages weren't as tough as I thought they would be. The GFX in this hack are nice too, and the music fits perfectly. Great Job WINED!!

Amazing work! I just knew there was so much more exciting features to this hack! Too bad about it being scrapped due to the actions of some nutjob. Don't give up Infidel... maybe all this will blow over and we can all resume a normal routine.

Someone ripping off of other Rom Hackers?
My question is, so what?
This kind of discussion comes up every once and a while in different forms. Normally though it's the question of modifying someone else's hack, hacking a hack is another way of saying it.
I mean when you get right down to it, it's not like you can ever claim anything in a rom hack is your intellectual property, because you're stealing the original's IP to begin with. I mean it would be one thing to just take someone's hack and slap your name on it instead, but I can't really see anything crazy wrong with using elements from other hacks. I mean Insectduel even said in one of his posts that he used elements from another hack that were originally elements from Kirby games. So I mean I can't seem to find the disconnect where using graphics from another hack is bad, but using graphics from another official game is okay. It sort of needs to be able to go both ways.

You just said everything I was going to say. If I take SMB GFX and slap them in a Mega Man game, then shouldn't I be accused of "stealing"? I mean when it comes right down to it... we are ALL guilty of this. I don't see what the fuss is all about personally. As long as enjoyment is gained from playing, that's what really matters in the end. And hell, look at all the Megaman 2 hacks out there already... it's been done over and over and over again! Like Dr. Hell just said in his post, it should go both ways.

Wow! I'm really amazed at all the crap that has gone down on board 2 as of the past few days. It seems everyone has forgot why we're all here... to learn about ROM hacking and enjoy each other's hacks. Insectduel... I have much respect for you as a hacker... but wouldn't it make more sence to spend more time on your own hacks rather then complaining about what another hacker is doing? Personally, if someone ripped GFX from one of my hacks, (IF I HAD ANY COMPLETED) I'd be kind of happy about it. Knowing that they liked it enough to use it would be kind of a compliment. After all, were all pretty much "stealing" when we use graphics from one game and put them into another. In other words, if I was to get "ripped off" it wouldn't bother me, and you shouldn't let it bother you.

My point is, I don't see Chiko causing any of us ROM hackers any harm. His hacks wont cause me to stop working on my Protoman game, so why should it keep you from completing Megagirl?

EDIT: I just played the Chiko hacks mentioned above. These hacks are VERY sloppy and seem to be just thrown together. Rockman Deft? WTF? The boss sprites just look rediculous! Not trying to sound mean here... but I find it hard to believe your so worked up over these hacks! Rockman WED OF SLASHER actually has the potintial to be a decent hack. Aside from the title screen being messed up, and some enemy placement issues, it's better constructed then Rockman Deft.

I wont bother playing the others, as I have no intrest after playing the two I just mentioned, but I really think you should stop making a BIG deal out of Chiko's ROM hacks. At least the guy is trying, and so what if he ripped GFX from other hacks. It's what you do with those GFX that are important, and personally, I didn't see anything really impressive here. Sorry for the long post, but this thread seems pointless. Concentrate on YOUR hacks, and forget about Chiko.

kuja killer, I bet it is a lot easier working with that CHR-ROM than it is with CHR-RAM. I'm curious as to what you did to create all of those events though. Like, the dialogue at the beginning of the electrical tower? And shooting the cacoon to make the web disappear? And dialogue mid-battle with Boltman? How did you create those events? Did you use existing objects in the game, and just re-code them?

I'm no pro such as Kuja Killer, but from what I know of Megaman 3, I'm guessing much of his work was built from scratch. And that is very impressive. But the dialogue puzzles me as well... Knowing how this was done could be very useful for a noob such as myself. I had idea's when I started my Protoman hack, to have dialogue exchanged between Protoman and other characters throughout the game, to further expand on his side of the story, but not knowing how to code that into the ROM... I pretty much gave up on that until I study and learn more about hacking.

You have my support as well! You know that from us talking before. It's good to hear you have everything backed up... I am in a band and play guitar, so I do much of my recording at home with my PC being the "brain" behind my mixing console, amps, and other recording equipment. I've gone through loosing my recordings once before, so it really does pay to have a backup plan.

If I can help in any way, feel free to let me know. If nothing else, I'd be happy just to be a beta tester once the hack is futher along, and you feel comfortable with your work.

Best wishes to you Kuja Killer!! We're with you!

Hmmmmm....... so this is what ROM hacking has become... Good lord!!

EDIT: I for one don't agree with this and think that this thread should be locked.... no deleted. I don't know about everyone else, but this used to be a site for serious hacks...

Sorry Newbie... just my opinion.

Alright guys, not sure how many of you have seen or know about this Castlevania game named after the canceled Sega 32X game, so I thought I'd post a bit of info since the game is so close to a FINAL release! A video is below!

I must say, from playing the BETA version, this game rocks! I can't say enough good things about this game! The game was created by Piscesdreams and is only for PC at the moment.

More info here: as well as the custom cover art I did for the game on page 67 of the thread! For those of us waiting for a new Castlevania to play.... the wait is over! Enjoy!

That sprite is very cool! Can't wait to see this hack completed, or have a new demo... that would be a great X-Mas gift! I know you guys don't want to give too much away in terms of story line, but I'm curious to know if Proto Man, Roll, and other characters will be involved somehow? Will the Proto Man battles be in tact, or have they been removed? It might be cool to give Proto Man a new look, or have Mega fight another foe... just throwing some idea's out to you guys. I've been away for awhile and am finally getting to catch up on all the hacks being made.

well amarcum81 - dont even got a storyline at all yet still all these years. i just dont know what it'll really be still.

And i would very much love to grant that wish to you and everyone about a 2nd demo as soon as possible.

Well, I'll be looking out for it. I was blown away by the first demo... this is one of the most advanced hacks I've ever seen! I know that Infidel plans on releasing Mega Man Ultra 2 to be playable on actual NES hardware, as I have the first one on cart already, will your hack be able to be dumped on an NES cart as well? I hope so, but figured I'd ask... Take care, keep up the great work on your hack!

Yeah maybe, but i can't really ever know my self because i do not own a NES so i wouldn't know the answer truly. Back in june or july this year, i managed to get someone on the nesdev forums to test this game out on a real NES, and it worked all good.

except for the weapon/pause menu screen being all screwed up because his cart did not have more than 8 KB saveRAM. Which this game uses more than the normal 8 kb limit.

So i wont really know honestly as this game evolves throughout the future how well it'll even get to work on a NES at all. But i am not expecting that many people would really actually play this on a nes anyway, just emulators.

For what it's worth to you Kuja, I'd play it on an NES!! Once it's completed, I'll see about getting it dumped to a cart, if it can be done, then I'll be ordering one from gamereproductions.com

It just feels more like a video game if I can play it on real hardware... that's just me though. I'm sure there are those who prefer emulation... either way, I can't wait to play!

Does anyone here happen to have the updated IPS for Rockman 4: MI ?? I went to the author's site and it would appear the link to the IPS has been disabled. I was on vacation in Florida for the past few weeks and missed it, didn't find out until now that it was updated. Would really like to play the new levels if anyone would be kind enough to upload it to the uploader here.

Kuja... you do great work! The new demo is amazing. I've been on vacation and just now got to check it out. I'd love to help out with the hack, but I'm afraid I lack the skills your looking for. Also, I'm still working on my Proto Man hack off and on... kind of at a stand still right at the moment. Just wanted to say great job and let me know if I can be of any help. I'm really looking forward to seeing your hack complete.

A Megaman 2 two-player co-op hack.
Im sure it is possible to do, somehow. Both players would be active at the same time.

Some ideas:
The Select button could function to make the player disappear. Pressing the Select button again makes the player appear at the other player's location (as long as he is on top of a wall). The "teleportation" can function to save players in some cases, like when halted scrolling makes one player unable to reach a platform (and falls down at the side of the screen). A player can use Select to drop in and out at any time. (I obviously got some ideas from the New SMB Wii trailer..)

The player that gives the finishing blow to a boss, gets the weapon.

It would be another project on my "project stack" so.. i dont think an attempt will happen.

This would be cool... I've actually been wondering if this is possible myself. Although I doubt very much that it is.... What if we could replace one of Mega Man's weapons with another character... Protoman... or Bass? That way the character could switch between the two during game play, just as he would as if selecting a weapon from the start menu.

I'm a noob when it comes to ASM, so I'm probably making no sense here... but the idea of having a two player Mega Man ROM hack would be killer!

You'll be able to use SRAM/EXRAM to save games. How about that..
The save screen is a mess, so no preview of that.
You may also use passwords as an alternative.

Any idea if this hack will run on actual NES hardware?

@amarcum81: I own a PowerPak (NES flash cart), so i tested it on NES hardware myself. It does work.I live in Europe, so the test was on a PAL NES unit.
If it will run glitch-free on an American unit, i am not sure.

Thanks Matrixz, I'm going to have it dumped on a cart when it's released, that's why I was asking. It just feels better playing a great hack like yours on actual hardware.

Ahh.. you could have both Protoman and Bass. Protoman would be able to slide, which gives you access to places/secrets that Megaman can't reach. Same with Bass. He would have his double-jump which would allow you to reach places far up. If its Megaman 2, Item-1 and Item-3 would be removed, you use Bass in their place.

That could be cool... now to find someone that could actually code this. Or if someone could point me in the right direction of learning where to start.

Looks good so far! These tiles you're using are nice! So what made you have to restart so many times?

I can't say I haven't had to re-start my hacks a few times here and there, lol My Proto Man hack of Megaman 2 is on it's third round, and my hack of Megaman 4 is on it's second. So far, I'm pleased with what I've been able to do. If I could just find the time to dedicate to learning ASM, I'd be set!

Anyway, back on topic... looks good so far, and I for one enjoyed the first "Maverick Revenge". I recall it needing a bit of work here and there, but overall, a pretty good hack. Hope to see more progress on this one!

I've been meaning to comment on this thread for awhile, just now getting around to it. I simply can't wait for this hack! I haven't been this excited about a SMB hack since "Mario Adventure".

Can't wait to see more.
