Sup?

It's been a while. Not that I believe even half of you remember who I am, but I used to regular here before the split, and as seen by my post count, slightly after. Others might know me from my critically ignored hack known as Ice Metal.

And in case you have not seen it on my newly ported layout, I have been turned into quite a huge my little pony fan over recent times, but I'll assume that should come as no surprise to this community as you all have most likely heard all about it by this point.

So why am I here? Well apparently KP wants to breath some more life into this place. I replied saying that I did not like the overall mood of this place, but since he said it had changed over recent time; so I decided to give it a try at least. I'll stick around for as long as I think it's worthwhile to stick around.

The poll is merely for fun, but hey, I guess it does not hurt asking what you people think this place could be with more activity.

Oh har har KP, you already know all the places I go to, in fact, I believe you posted on Jul as well.

Not to mention I have never been one to advertise much in my signature.

Are there some sort of rules for this topic or something? Since I did not see any in the first post and people seem a bit douchy about something in here.

And since I did not read anything, I'll assume none humans is fine too! ´:3

Generic title since this will be an generic topic.

SMB2 is not a widely hacked game, to say the least. Due to this there are several things that are not know. (Though I must admit that the data crystal page was fully packed with information!)

There for, I'd like to request some help in figuring things out! And in turn, I will of course try to help other people with what I know.

So, to get down to business: I got done with world 1 but from there on out I ran into a bit of an roadblock. Graphics loaded (sprites and layer 1) are handled in two bits per world. Changing what graphics an world uses is quite easy. However, world 2 (and 6(?)) uses quicksand ground.

For those of you who don't know, SMB2 loads ground data type in the level header, and afterwards uses objects to change what ground setting is used. Rather then using objects to render general ground like how games like SMW does it.

The problem I'm facing is that ground data seem to be pre-set for each world. (Shitty level data format GO!) So in world 2 sand ground would be ground type (I'm guessing these values.) 0000 where as quicksand would be 0001, bricks would be on 0100 or something. World 1, on the other hand, had grass under 0000 and sand under 0001 (and does not have quicksand at all.)

This is where the problem comes in, I don't know what in the world data determines this. (I'm quite sure it's not in the level data header, but I could be wrong.) This is a problem when you are in situations such as mine when you want world 2 to be grassland too, and not have sand in at all.

Edit: To clarify further: [Link]
This is an image of world 2 loading the same graphics/tile tables as world 1 and using ground type 0. Clearly it still renders sand ground, which means it's not an graphics/tile table issue.

The hack is harder than the original game, and maybe a tiny bit harder than my previous hack as well. However, it should still be beatable for most people - my ultimate goal is always to make my hacks contain some challenge, while not being so frustrating that they're not fun to play. This means that there are no unfair or invisible traps or anything like that.

Yeah sorry about butchering your topic, but I don't get this logic. I played (or at least tried) your last hack, the rise and fall of wily, so I got a pretty decent idea at what you got going here if it's the same/harder.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't mind hacks like these that are clearly for huge fanatics of X video game series and are clearly made to be challenging for them. But seriously, don't market your hack as something it's not. This is not an hack that an casual megaman fan like me could pick up and play. (AKA; people who have played and beaten a few classic megaman games. 2, 6, 7, 9 and 10 in my case) You would have to be a pretty darn fan/borderline megaman hacker to find something like this enjoyable.

Megaman games are frustrating at heart since it will take time to learn them and figuring out how to deal with what each of the stages throws at you. Throwing in more frustrating jumps that requires even better timing (Which I can even see you did without playing from your screenshots!) does nothing but make the game even more frustrating. Just because you're hack is not the worst one does not mean it's not frustrating as fuck.

But like I said though, it's quite clear that I'm not your target demographic by a landslide. And it's certainly not your fault either, after all, you are free to design what you want to make when you're in the free video game business. But I'd appreciate it if it was not marketed at me (Even if it was unintentional.) After all, getting a game and then figuring out it's nothing like what you expected can be quite an sour apple.

I hope my post is not discouraging you though, it's quite clear you put in quite a lot of effort to make this (hats off to you gentlemen.) And I'm certain the people who are into these type of games/hack will enjoy it! =)

No I mean, I was not the one who drew them. Of course I play with the graphics because I like them!

doesn't help how hostile a lot of the regular and accepted posters are to everyone.

Fixed!
Posted by ninjablooper

I personally think this is mature site compared to a big percent of the internet. Yeah a lot of regulars are a bit hostile to new members, but honestly if you can't take some hostility, you shouldn't be here. I don't like when people whine like "Oh he yelled at me! I will cry!"

You know this is a pretty shitty mindset, right? Trying to justify being an ass to the fact that other parts of the internet is worse is not really very valid.

Drama will always happen, you can never get away from that. People being an general ass to each other? You can get away from that, I know quite a few places around the net that I go to that do. The question is, are the people here willing to be in a community where they are not allowed to be an ass?

I left this place before because it was hostile. And it was not even aimed at me, nor did I take offence at it. It's much simpler then that, really. I just don't find it worthwhile to waste my time in a community where respect for one other is that low. Of course, YMMV, as always.

That's the one I am using!

And in the case of this problem it's the lack of documentation on the data that stands in my way. And I have never been good at tracing shit.

KP: Would you remind releasing those amazing looking cavern tiles you drew for that super metroid hack you where planning on making?

They looked amazing and it would be a shame if they never saw the light of day in an hack/other game.

^ See that post, that was amazing. ´:3

And yeah, I can understand that view. I joined this place myself at inc3 due to romhacking stuffz. But after the split 2x combo rom hacking have been going downhill in activity on all fronts, sadly.

Inspired to start ROM hacking? My love for super metroid and seeing the next big thing within super metroid hacking at the time... darkness spreads 2. (Not that anypony here would know what that one was...)

To get inspiration on what to do in general, such as getting ideas and getting into it and doing it? Well, it mostly come from meditation, music, and feedback.
