Hi all, I've been at acmlm's board since 2006, and vanished when the board went down. I'm back (if anyone cares), please to meet you all. I have created a couple of hacks over the years also and I'm somewhat working on a Super Mario RPG hack. Please to meet you all.

I'm having a little problem. Whenever I go into a door or leave a battle, the screen becomes dark but I can hear music and sound but I can't see anything.

Also, if I lose a battle in the beginning (Bowser's castle), how can I make it to reset the game. Also, how can I make the player open the menu as they can't in the beginning?

I finished this hack around last year. It's an Earthbound hack which is called The Mysterious Mine. It takes place in 2006 in a town called Orange, VA. Basically, this hack includes myself and other characters.

Characters

Trae- An 18 year old male who is almost graduating from high school. He's a quiet person but strong. He hears a loud sound in which he finds out it's just that his mother turned up the TV too loud. He is sent out to get ice cream in the middle of the night. He can't go to town so he finds another path but finds strange humans. What else happens to this young man? Play the hack to find out.

Rakim-Known as one of the greatest emcees of all time. Knows magic, and aids Trae to get back home from the Mysterious Mine.

Jack-The well known farmer from the Harvest Moon series. He aids Trae & Rakim to restore peace to Mineral Town. He doesn't know magic but his tools will aid in battle.

Lida-The tomboyish princess of Octavian (a sunkern cavern town). She knows magic like Trae & Rakim. She aids Trae & the gang when they find the King's Urn and proceeding to the caves of Octavian.

You can download the hack from...
http://forum.starmen.net/forum_attachments/0006/8163/TMM_Final_Version_Fixed_Ver_3.zip

Or just from my site (look in the sig)

Here's a couple of screenshots

These are all controlled by level event scripts; For the dark screen, the level your exit points to needs to have a 'fade in screen' event set. Resetting the game can also be done via event scripts.

Lastly, to disallow the menu, you have to use the joypad control events to disable the X button.

You should be able to find examples of almost all of these in the event scripts set up for bowser's castle, first time.

Thanks, I found out how to fix the fade in screen problem. However, if you wanted to change animation for a character, how would you know which animation and sequence goes to the right character. Also, I'm trying to change the pallete for an NPC, I do in the level editor but when I play my hack, the effect doesn't take place.

I like the look of this hack from the screenies. Did you some of the gfx yourself because I know some of them are from other Megaman games. I would like to try this out when I get the chance.

Well this is entertaining. I played for a bit and so far it's interesting enough. Pop culture references are always fun, the teleport effect is a nice touch, and the little cinematic things (music, etc) work well. Couple of problems though.

First, the guy on the game over screen is still Ness. Having not touched PK Hack for a while, I'm not entirely sure if you can change this, but if you can please do.
Second, the font is somewhat difficult to read. bdfhklt should be the only "tall" letters, gjpqy should be the only ones dipping down, everything else should be nice and small.
Third, enemy graphics aren't great. Not everyone's an artist, though, so I can forgive this.
Fourth, little grammar/spelling errors here and there.
Fifth (and this is a big one), make sure the player can't sequence break. I somehow got through the Claw battle without Rakim, then got stuck in a locked room with Gadget and Penny. Have something in place to prevent the player from getting here before having what's necessary to escape.

Other than that, it's perfectly ok.

Bah, I didn't see until a bit ago that this is the final release. Oh well, just thought I'd let you know.

Thanks for you comment. About the death screen, I was afraid to change it because of the chance that the hack might break. Also, I didn't know about the part going to Claw Castle without Rakim. Maybe that I need to put an NPC at the entrance of the cave to Claw's Castle from Smurf Village and have that NPC disappear when Rakim is on your team.

I have to say, playing this hack can be difficult at times but the way you made it is pretty awesome. I bet it took some time to make the debug menu. I like how you have a shop a la Megaman 7. I like how you used some music tracks from other Megaman games but some sound in different pitches that I can't even recognize them. Overall, I would like to see more and good luck with this project.

I've been wondering about this for a while. Is it possible to change the settings of a level to a different level? For example, changing 1-1 from a Plains level to a Desert level. I tried this before but when I did it, the level just looked messed up.

Also, isn't it possible to have different enemies in a stage such as a hammer bro with a giant ? block?

My other question is, for those who have edited music in NES games, is there a program or is it done a different way?

Thanks for the help, Quick Curly. I have hacked SMB3 but for some reason when I did, the ROM got messed up so I quit. I first used SMB3 Discombobulator/ Improvement before Workshop.

Let me be a little more specific on the enemies. For example, when you play your edited ROM, you see a hammer bro, all of a sudden another enemy is behind it and for some reason the hammer bro looks like garbled graphics.

Also, I would like to completely finish a SMB3 hack someday.

My favorites would have to be...

Earthbound (my first RPG I believe)
Super Mario Brothers 3
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Super Smash Bros (IMO, the best out of the three)
Goldeneye (N64) (my first FPS shooter I played)
Sonic 1,2, 3, & Knuckles, 3D Blast
Ristar
Plok! (for the SNES)
Punchout!!
Super Ninja Boy (For the Super NES, for those who've played Little Ninja Brothers for the NES, this game is the sequel.)
Super Mario RPG (who doesn't like this)
Paper Mario (N64) (better than 2 & 3)
The Simpsons Arcade
Battle Hunter (some say it's boring, but it's cool to me, and the music is great)
Legend of the Mystical Ninja (N64) & Goemon's Great Adventure
(GGA was the game that introduced me to Goemon and the gang)
Dig Dug
Mappy

My favorite pizza place would be Pizza Hut but Papa John's pizza is good too in my opinion. I just like how you can get Stuffed Crust in Pizza Hut pizzas and I do miss the Bigfoot pizza Pizza Hut used to sell.

I'm having another problem when editing my rom with SMB3 Workshop. Whenever I save my work and if I have edited graphics with YY-CHR or edited the ROM with an hex editor an once I test my rom, it seems that the level gets edited but the other edits doesn't take place. This is vice-versa if a edit a level first then graphics or saving an edited rom using a hex editor. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?

I agree, the video was disturbing and a little funny at the same time. If this game was at an anime con, I don't think I would play it but it might be interesting...

Are there any YMCK fans here? I first heard of these guys when they were announced to performed at Katsucon this year. Unfortunently, I did see their concert. I listened to some of their songs today which were pretty great.

Does anybody know where I can buy their albums? I'd like to hear more of their stuff.

Does anybody know the ROM addresses for the palettes for Mario & Luigi's map sprite palette? I found the main palette for when they're in levels but I just need their map palettes.

Also, is there a way to change the big image when you match three cards from the end level box and you awarded lives depending on what same three images you got?

Is there any way I can change the PPU for Mario & Luigi's map palette? I figured out why their map palettes don't match up to their changed palette except for if you're small Mario/Luigi. I tried using the hex editor in FCEUXD and changing the PPU Memory but it was no use. So can PPU memory be edited or not?

Okay, so is there a way to change the map palettes of Mario/Luigi when they're in different forms? Because the fire and raccoon palettes seem to be linked with the PPU.

Here's a couple of screenshots of a SMB3 hack that I'm in the making of.

Koopa Troopa remodeled into a Robot

A drumstick from a block, hmm?

The drumstick makes Louis into a Coccatoo. Yeah, it was very difficult changing the graphics, believe me.

More mechanical enemies

New invisible jumping animation, kind of Sonic jump style.

I haven't really gotten a chance to edit the levels, I'm more focused on editing the graphics, then the levels. This project is actually a sequel to a SMB1 hack that I made three years ago. For more info, check out my site in the games section. Also, look out for a thread about this project soon.
