There's this weird phoenomenon going on...

My connection is slow as SHIT. So much so, that I can't even connect to IRC, let alone load webpages.

We have no modems in our house, whatsoever. Everyone's internet signal comes from a router, which we plug our broadband (cable tv) cable into, which comes from outside.

When I shut off the router for a while, and then turn it back on, my connection is great. However, after a while, the connection degrades to slow-as-shit.

Another thing that might factor in is that my brother is doing something that is causing constant internet activity. I don't know if it's Vanguard, a torrent, or a virus, but I'm thinking his constant internet activity isn't helping much.

Yet another thing is that this router is around 5 years old, so it's definately antiquated, but is it finally giving out?

Also, I've noticed that for a long time now (years), even if nobody's using the connection, the receive light blinks like crazy, like the router's receiving packets all the time. Last Wednesday is when this problem started happening. Comcast upgraded our neighborhood's system thingy to fiber optics. Ever since then, my connection's been absolute shit.

So... what's going on? My brother might be clogging our bandwidth, our router might be giving out, and the fiber optics might be letting those stray packets clog our bandwidth too. Or maybe something different's happening?

Either way, on Tuesday, a tech is coming to our house to give us a new router, and to check our connection.

Yeah, there's wireless, but it's really crappy. And the wireless-activity light isn't blinking at all, so nobody's leeching from it.

Another thing, my brother was running a torrent using bittorrent. One, I didn't have the port forwarding set up for it, and two, he just now turned it off. So far, the connection has lasted for 11 minutes, with a very nice SNR, when before, it'd die in 5 minutes. Maybe the torrent was it? Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

Anyway, I set up the port fowarding for bittorrent:
6881-6999, both UDP and TCP. Is this the correct forwarding for bittorrent?

Maybe the router was being flooded with communication on unforwarded ports? I dunno if that'd slow it down any more than if the ports were forwarded.

Okibi (I was chatting to him online, I was matched against his wife in the rated o tournament) said that my problem sounded like cable latency. As in, too much data is travelling across it, and my router can't handle it, and that a way to fix it is to take the coaxial out and hold the pin for 30 seconds.

It's like a buildup or something. It makes sense, actually, since when there's a lot of activity on the network, that tends to make the connection die out.

Hopefully newer routers can handle this... Tuesday's when we get the upgrade.

Let's take everything personally now, shall we?

No, it's not a big filesize.
Yes, it's a big picture size, as in dimensions.

The picture itself is ok, but it feels like the eyes are a bit too low.

Also, don't worry about Mystery Gourmet. That's Valcion/Phil/TRC, and he's a 4channer (and he really fails if he didn't see Trapster when he made that post ).

The eyes are vertically centered in the head. I mean, when looking at a face, it seems like they're higher because the person's hair covers up the forehead (more often than not). Also because of the generic smiley face.

Welcome to Manassas!

From what I hear from other people, Manassas has good scenery. I can't really form an opinion on this, since I've lived here my whole life, but from other out-of-state people, they say it's a really pretty place.

Lots of plastics have that problem, actually...

My C128 is a little strange... the keyboard part has yellowed, but the back part hasn't.

I also have a power strip that's yellowed, but it's right next to a sunny window.

But yeah... at this point its like... 6 acmlmers in the radius of 10 or so miles
I don't think Winchester's all that far from there either... is it? I don't know.

I don't think it is... we don't know every single Acmlmer who lives near us. I only just know Tanks and Kattwah.

Edit: I don't know them personally, I just know they live near me.

I have a tendancy to say "you guys" when referring to large groups of people. Even groups of girls. It's just another way of saying "hey all of you".

Anyway, I have a tendancy of saying gizmo and widget. The "plug link" that you plug ethernet cords to, and it carries the signal through the electricity outlets in the house? I call that a gizmo, because I have no idea what those are actually called.

Widget just sounds cool, so I sometimes say widget when I'm referring to a somewhat small (usually mechanical) device. Kinda like widgets in programming terms (buttons, checkboxes, option buttons, textboxes, etc, all are called widgets in programming).

I don't usually have a tendancy of giving strange names to objects though. I tend to call many things "things", but I try to call it what it is.

Nice floor!!
I also agree with everyone, you have great taste! It's nice that everything actually *matches*, unlike in my house.

I was in my school's orchestra ever since 4th grade, so that's about 8 years of Violin right there.

I'm able to play the stand-up bass too, but not that well.

In addition, I can also play guiter... just not well either.

When I was younger, I took piano lessons, but I'll be damned if I can remenber any of it. I do have a keyboard I mess around on every once in a while, but I'm not an uber piano player or anything.

I want to play the steel drums!

My parents don't mind that I still live here. This is mostly because I just graduated from high school last year and am in college. They actually say it's weird when I'm not around.

My brother on the other hand (the older of my two older brothers) still lives here though... He's got to be 25 by now. He has trouble keeping jobs. He's currently with a temp agency. Yeah, he's also done some other stuff that I'd rather not discuss here at this time, but fortunately, all of that has been resolved, so there is no drama around here anymore.

My other brother lives in Los Angeles I think, all the way on the west coast. My sister, I'm not sure where she lives now, but I think it's somewhere in Washington state.

As for me, I have plans on moving out to Los Angeles, because all of the video game related jobs are in California, but this won't be until after I've graduated college.

I'd love to be able to make some decent chiptunes again. My creative juices ran out.

And yeah, this reminds me of something Weebl would make.
