I say go with what you want, I mean, anything can turn into a story. ANYTHING! Also, dreams help a lot! I've based a lot of my stuff off dreams I've had.
An idea I got for you is, why not create some alternate reality on Earth, where some major event didn't go as it did in our timeline? Like, for instance, if the United States civil war never ended and broke it into two entirely different countries. Or, Hitler actually succeeded in taking and holding Europe? It's an idea. Actually , I keep thinking about learning it sometime soon, just because of those just-in-case cases, and if I ever head over to japan for some reason, there you go. I really really doubt that I'll need it while living here.
