If you want to, I can try and replicate his work. Then all we'd need is a tilemap-based editor. The problem with replicating his work is that I only have the RAM address that things are loaded into, but not the function's entry address. Still, if not too many functions use that address, I should be able to find it.



The most important thing about said editor is that things are still screen-based. Each screen is 16 by 64 metatiles (each being 16x16 pixels), and there's 16 screens. The tilemap, to compound this, is planar -- each tile is 16 bits, but it's stored as two seperate chunks of 8 bit values.

So you have 16x64 screens = 1024 bytes, times 16 screens = 16384 bytes per plane. Then you have another 16384 bytes for the second plane.

Still, I've had plenty time to figure this out for writing a level editor.

Raw 2*8bit planar --> raw 16bit linear --> de-screen --> editable, and ofcourse the opposite of this.

Actually, I find MAME's built-in viewers adequate most of the time. Stuff won't be encrypted or compressed there.

The main problem with using external editors is that in a lot of games I've tried, things were interleaved from two seperate chips (therefore ROMs). You'd have to identify which set of ROMs belong to eachother, then find the big endian half and merge the two into a single file that you can then, hopefully, load in your favorite editor.

Fun fact: GreyMario's layout is blocked in IE (now merely IE6 and lower) because it wasn't until IE7 that it supported alpha-blended PNGs. (Why? That's another topic.)

Why is this fun? Because BH doesn't care much about markup quality, the later Internet Explorers default to quirks mode, therefore GM's sniff thinks it's IE6 after all and still blocks it!

If you're using IE6, "a better browser" would include IE8. However, Board2 won't get any better from that because of my preceding post.

I had IE8, which is still good, but I find Opera better than that, so IE8 is kept around for testing and having a (in my own personal opinion) better developer's toolbar. I had IE by choice, on my own system that I installed myself.

Why do I keep forgetting where these things go best? If you, the mods, think you know better, feel free to move this thing around a bit.

At any rate, I've been working on this thing for a few days now. You may have noticed the shot in the Screenshots Thread over at ROM hacking. It's a C#-based FF6-style RPG engine.

Now, the name of the app, so far, is "Final Fantasy 6 .Net", as the thread title implies. For safety, the shortened form "FF6.Net" is one possibility. As you can see, this could fit nicely on a title screen.

Chief suggested, as we talked about the project during a walk back from the store, that "Terra" would be a pretty nice "even safer" name. Contemplating this, I decided this poll was in order and whipped up two variants: one where the text is on the left, another with the on the right of the MTek.

So what do you think? Check out the mockups, vote and we'll see what happens.

Having talked to Treeki about it, I got his notes.

His level loader was hardcoded to a specific address, so every level would use the same tilemap. Ofcourse, different header settings wreak havoc on which tiles are used, exactly.

I went and found out where in RAM the game stores the current level's header pointer and adapted Treeki's code to use that instead. Now all I need is an editor.
