How to use
First, declare a Sappy player engine as follows: Public WithEvents Sappy As clsSappyDecoder To play a song with this engine, simply call the PlaySong method as follows:
For example, to play the Pallet Town song from Pokémon Fire Red, you'd pass index 300 (&H12C) as the index and &H4A32CC as the list offset. Note that MicroSappy has this offset preset. There is no limit.
1. There are four background palette slots and four sprite slots. Each slot has three colors, plus the first entry which is mirrored to each slot. That's (3 * 4) + 1 = 13 colors. 2. With scanline detection and good timing, you can change the palettes in mid-screen. That gives you a near unlimited amount of combinations from the base palette the abovementioned 13 slots index from. 3. Well, yeah. You can indeed raise the apparent number of colors per sprite by overlaying. Just check out the faces of Mega Man and the Robot Masters, but that does bring you closer to the sprite limit.
If you don't care about the sprite limit, you'd have about 12 colors to choose from. That's the ultimate limit for a single NES sprite. Speedremix is pushing it. Note that I made a mistake and forgot to include the sprite bank.
