I think I read somewhere that it uses whatever's available or something. You have at least 500 megs available, so that it'll use. Something like that. Okay, my two cents.
The background is not visible through any table cells at all, post layouts be damned, only through the spaces inbetween tables. Any text such as the breadcrumbs and new reply links is nigh unreadable. The cell colors are nice, but the background is effectively less than worthless.
