Mostly because these are 4bpp images, so you'd have to do a fair amount of bit math to determine where that specific color is - and just a little less if your positioning is on a 2:1 ratio. Those lines that make every other part slightly offset from earlier in that screenshot, could those be not graphics at all but in fact the positioning info? That'd make sense. When you said "there are some pixels that act as a placement mechanism" I assumed you meant "in the actual sprites themselves", completely forgetting that the image data shifts around. Frankly, it's all the better that KI:U isn't a remake of or "more of the same" as the original KI. Most of the younger 3DS gamers wouldn't know the original anyway. They'd only know Pit and co from Smash Bros Brawl. From there, KI:U could be any kind of game the creators want it to be. And on the flip side, the older 3DS gamers who do remember the original KI get a fresh new game with a classic character.
