There's a missing fonts problem because 10.50 is running on an under-equipped VM, but is that the basic effect you're after?

If your browser needs a noticable time to render those shadows, get a better browser. Or faster computer, but "better browser" is the, shall we say, usual fix so that one goes first.

In fact, most of the code changes you'll need to make would probably relate to things like savegames -- Metroid went from Zelda-style "register your name" to a password system, along with its sister game Kid Icarus.

I'm not sure how loading of stuff is different from a NES, but that too might be a problem.
