Now, I do find Windows update the most backwards thing ever (especially compared to your average Linux package manager)
Ahem.

At set times, the second Tuesday of the month IIRC, is Update Day for Windows. Annoying as it may be with the restarts and whatnot, you can be certain some form of security update will be there and will be installed. More critical updates are, IIRC, released, downloaded and installed outside of this schedule.

On a Mac it's like that, but with no fixed schedule.

In Linux, correct me if I'm wrong, you have to download the updates yourself. This brings its own problems.

Perhaps if you listed their actual functions?

One important thing to mind is that out of the box, there are no menu items or whatever to signify there is an IRC client, feed reader, mail client or BitTorrent. There's only one item in Tools, "Mail and Chat accounts". Set up a mail account there and only then will the Mail menu appear. Same deal with the IRC client, and the torrent client is the same thing as the regular downloader. So until you actually start to use these functions, you don't get the extra UI parts.

Cookie editor: built in.
Dictionary: not included, but a Widget is probably available. Here's one for Chinese at least.
Mass downloader: Links sidepanel, supports multiselect. Then pick Save, Save to Download Folder. Can't believe I didn't find out until now...
Firebug: Dragonfly
Headers: Couldn't find it. You can at the very least edit the UA string, I know that much.

Edit: about the mass downloader, you might want to use the included search box to filter on the kind of file you want.

That's a nice way of doing it, but the keyword here is "by default". I very clearly remember, when I installed Windows just recently. It asked me quite early on what kind of update scheme I wanted to use. I can't remember which radio button was preselected, but surely this should count for something?

Incidentally, I set it to exactly the scheme you just described right there and haven't looked back since.

Man, I didn't even do the whole "setting up IE8" thing. I just nabbed an Opera installer from backup and used that. But that's another topic altogether.

That default schedule does suck balls, I'll admit.

Wait, what? Changing "an option in the registry" equals reboot (be it forced or asked for)? Please define "changing an option in the registry", cos by my definition (finding the option in Regedit or merging in a .reg file which is done by the same), that doesn't happen.

Did you perhaps mean, "make a change in the registry so that Windows Update doesn't reboot by itself"? Cos that'd make perfect sense.

Some people like cupcakes better. I for one care less for them.
Some people.... Some people like cupcakes exclusively while I myself, I say there is not, nor ought there be anything so exalted on the face of God's Great Earth than that Prince of Foods.

The Muffin.

As for cheesecakes, I made a lot of those myself back in the day. I might try again some day.

I don't have to ask. It's a very basic setup in principle.

His profile's where? There's supposed to be a number at the end there. Like 1929.

By closer consideration, here's what's happening:

You requested an invalid profile by leaving out the number. The SQL request returns nothing at all, hence the obvious warning at the top of the page. Since the user name is "", it'd be unclickable. There is code in place to make sure all user names are clickable, so it becomes what you see here.

Nbsp is not really banned because he doesn't exist and never has.

Look at your own profile. Notice how in the post side bar, your name is a link. It's in boldface to underline this . The name at the top of the profile page is not a link.

I said the nbsp thing was to make sure the name is clickable. These are not links, so they were never meant to be clickable in the first place.

Still, you made a good point there. I'll grant you that.
