I'll be starting a list of the bosses I've created/uploaded recently. They're good starter bosses in my opinion; they are usually just a step above the default bosses in difficulty and sophistication.
Compass We start off with this lovely circle-thing. The Compass was built prior to the newest release, but was only uploaded quite recently. Anyway, Compass' gimmick is that he always keeps his face to you, or at least his big compass arrow. Always, and that's no exaggeration; the player aim panel that the compass head is mounted on rotates at maximum speed. To hit the naked, vulnerable core, you'll either have to slowly blast your way through the compass head... Or just use a blur decoy and hit him from behind. Difficulty: Easy-Moderately Hard Armaments: Tons of vulcans, bullet trio, and quite the array of lasers. Utilizes more weaponry as the arrow is destroyed. Stats: -Power: ||||------ -Defense: |||------- -Speed: ||-------- -Agility: ||||------ -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |||------- -Bullet Color: Default Crash He's a lot smaller than the Compass, but certainly a lot more deadly. Crash's face is completely armored; trying to attack from the front will most likely be useless. Flanking is also made hard, thanks to the fact that he responds very sharply to flanking attempts. Don't get too close, or he'll bowl you over in an instant; he doesn't waste time! Difficutly: Hard Armaments: Missiles, bullets, and scattering vulcans. No surprise weapons here. Stats: -Power: ||||||--- -Defense: |||||----- -Speed: |||||----- -Agility: |||||||--- -Aim: |||||----- -Strategy: ||||||---- -Bullet Color: Red/Orange Limit Limit is much more a tech test than a full-fledged boss; those four claw things actually home in and orbit your ship, charging up energy to fire their deadly lasers. A core also floats about, controlling the laser apparatus on your ship. Simple goal; destroy the main ship before those lasers go off! [Difficulty: Easy Armaments: Orbiting lasers. The main core is completely unarmed. Stats: -Power: |||------- -Defense: |--------- -Speed: |---------- -Agility: |--------- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |--------- -Bullet Color: Yellow Prescision This boss is a far ranged one, preferring to strafe and back away instead of charge straight in. Why wouldn't it, though? It's fully destroyable; a blaster would wreak havoc on this fellow! Regardless, it backs up its weak armor and cowardly battle style with a powerful helping of its weaponry! As the name implies, Precision tries to corner you using dumbfire weapons and clustering shots, and follows that up with accurately aimed or homing attacks. Hopefully, you'll find somewhere to move just in time to dodge such attacks... Difficulty: Medium/Hard Armaments: Cluster bullets (aimed and non-aimed), Homing lasers, Thin Lasers, Remote Blast, and a Close-Ranged Flamethrower. Stats: -Power: ||||------ -Defense: ||-------- -Speed: ||||------ -Agility: ||||------ -Aim: |||||----- -Strategy: ||||------ -Bullet Color: Blue Viper X A fairly small, but powerful contender, the Viper X has a weak core, but guards it with a strong hull overall. Not only is its armor and speed above par, but it has VERY strong attacks, all of which have unorthodox firing methods. The attacks are fast, varied, and usually quite lethal; you'll have to be quick on your feet to best this opponent! Difficulty: Very Hard Armaments: Thin lasers, Fast Cluster Bullets, Bombardment Power Balls, Homing Lasers. Stats: -Power: |||||||--- -Defense: |||||----- -Speed: ||||||||-- -Agility: |||||----- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: ||-------- -Bullet Color: Purple Guardsman My first boss designed specifically for fixed-area mode. The Guardsman is a gigantic, stationary enemy. Guardsman's defenses are extremely strong, with only select weapons available to be destroyed, and a core guarded by an orbiting shield. Your attacks will need to be on time to damage this goliath. Difficulty: Hard Armaments: Lasers, Bullets, Scattering Vulcans, Wall-Homing Lasers. Stats: -Power: |||||----- -Defense: ||||||||-- -Speed: |-------- -Agility: |||------- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |||||----- -Bullet Color: Blue Lord of Gears The Lord of Gears is easily the most defensible of the bosses in this list. It accomplishes this feat by having a set of three orbiting shields that guard it at any given moment. It's a fairly far-fighting enemy, though. Being bowled over by this fellow won't be a concern. The weapons aren't incredibly strong, even if they are a bit unusual. Difficulty: Medium/Hard Armaments: Dragon-shot Laser (Has a very distinct charge-up sequence), Conentrated Fast Beams, Needlers, Scatter Vulcans, Homing Laser. Stats: -Power: ||||||---- -Defense: |||||||||| -Speed: |||||----- -Agility: ||||||---- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |||||----- -Bullet Color: Red Steel Wyvern The Steel Wyvern is an extremely fast and aggressive attacker. Able to fire a shot in any direction from its body and speed across the arena at lightning fast speeds, the Steel Wyvern can, and probably WILL hit you from all angles at once, probably even bowling you over with its body in the process. As the appearance might suggest, the Steel Wyvern's body bends as it weaves in its flight. It's frontal armor is nearly unbreachable, and though the back is vulnerable to a degree, it can be quite annoying to try and access it, what with the Wyvern rocketing around so quickly. Difficulty: Very Hard Armaments: Burst Missiles, Needlers, Bullets, Eye beams. Stats: -Power: ||||||||-- -Defense: ||||------ -Speed: |||||||||| -Agility: |||||||--- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |||||||--- -Bullet Color: Orange Quick A small, fast moving fighter. His armaments are pretty minimalistic, but shouldn't be underestimated. He's got incredible defenses, thanks to his strategy in combat. Difficulty: Very Hard Armaments: Double scatter bullets, Penta-boomerang shot. Stats: -Power: ||||------ -Defense: ||||------ -Speed: |||||||--- -Agility: |||||||||| -Aim: ||||||||-- -Strategy: |||||||--- -Bullet Color: Blue HEX-ZONE HEX-ZONE is dangerous. The first truly Bullet-Hell boss I've created. He doesn't move, but uses supreme firepower to his advantage, as well as a touch of special armoring to keep you from simply blasting away; including a regenerating shield generator, and counter-shot panels. Difficulty: Extremely hard. Armaments: Boomerang Power Balls, Homing Lasers, Bullet Energy Eggs, Bullet Burst, Bullet Counterattack, and Lasers. Stats: -Power: |||||||||- -Defense: |||||||--- -Speed: |--------- -Agility: |--------- -Aim: ||||||---- -Strategy: |||||||||- -Bullet Color: Green Starfish Rev. 13 Another Bullet-hell fellow. Unlike the HEX-ZONE, he's crafted quite specifically to play properly in Fixed-Area mode. He can be fought in an open area just fine; he's quite hard to cheese by sniping him, thanks to some of his weapons being quite effective at range. He's not nearly as defensive as HEX is, though. No shields or counter-panels or anything. However, once all his appendages are destroyed, he'll go into an overdrive mode. He cannot be killed until all his appendages are destroyed first. Difficulty: Very hard. Armaments: Crazy bubble attack, Laser circle, A buttload of vulcans, Bullet limit burst, and Homing Lasers that grow really big when he's angry. And a terrible electric laser. Stats: -Power: |||||||||| -Defense: ||||||---- -Speed: |--------- -Agility: |--------- -Aim: ||||||||-- -Strategy: ||||||---- -Bullet Color: Light Blue Security Rail WOW! Yet another bullet-heller. This one has three distinct stages of combat; the first one is a mostly defensive one, which generates energy walls, and uses a surplus of aimed weapons. Destroy its shield generators! The next stage whips out some wicked machine guns to try and mow you down; take out the rail sentry, as it will compromise the structure of the rail itself! After the sentry and rail is removed, go for the lone core... But don't go in expecting an easy fight; that core will use everything it's got to keep itself from going down! It's best fought in 640 by 480 fixed area mode. Difficulty: Crazy hard. Armaments: Reflecting lasers, Sniping lasers, Bullet-Machine guns, Homing laser missiles, Remote blast, Cluster missiles, Bullet eggs, Electric field (Don't get too near that core!), Power bombardier. Stats: -Power: |||||||||| -Defense: |||||||||- -Speed: ||-------- -Agility: |||------- -Aim: ||||||||-- -Strategy: |||||||||- -Bullet Color: Pale Purple The Magician A great and mighty force to be reckoned with; the Magician was an experimental mech, created by mankind, to be able to absorb and release different forms of energy. The mech could absorb heat, electrical charge, and even pure force into its system. One day, however, the mech absorbed an ancient alien lifeform into its power reserves. The alien, still living, was able to possess the mech and use it as a gigantic metallic body to carry out its will. What does this eldritch mech want? Where did it come from? We don't care; just destroy that thing! Difficulty: Crazy hard. Armaments: Homing Spirits, Hands of Inferno, Cathode Storm, Eldritch beam, Fireball summon, Overload pulse, Electric field. Stats: -Power: |||||||||| -Defense: |||||||||| -Speed: |--------- -Agility: ||||------ -Aim: |||||||||| -Strategy: |||||||||| -Bullet Color: Dark Red Viper Quick An upgrade to the minimalistic 'Quick' ship. His armaments are looking much more formidable now, but the base formula of a quick, hard-to-hit ship is still in place. Difficulty: Very Hard Armaments: Scatter-spread bullets, Penta-boomerang shot, Laser spread bit, Lance laser. Stats: -Power: |||||||--- -Defense: ||||------ -Speed: ||||||||-- -Agility: |||||||||| -Aim: |||||||||- -Strategy: |||||||||- -Bullet Color: Light Blue ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

New, crazy boss.

Posted by wemcndxl What do you mean, my stuff from the old compendium, or the older stuff in this thread? Because most of my stuff actually is quite old; I took practically a year long break or so from Fraxy. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

Ha, yeah. That's a vital difference between me and a lot of other creators; since I'm not a particularly major SHMUP player, I'm not a huge fan of bullet-spam!
But yeah. HEX ZONE is an example of what I can do when I do opt to make a Bullet-Hell enemy. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

Posted by plasma Yeah. I think some of my player model/weapon ideas made it in... 'Cept that those suggestions were so far back, that I don't remember what any of them were. Worse yet, it seems the forums had gotten wiped since I last visited. All I remember is that there was one player model type that I suggested: The Sniper. The Sniper type benefits from weapons that operate much differently than normal; the bullet could be a long ranged, low damage beam, while the blaster could be an extremely fast exploding shot. Why the sniper is named as such, however, is that the screen offset is much further out than default, allowing the pilot to stay very far away from their targets and still deal good damage to them. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

For a 640 X 480 Fixed area, what is the proper offset to have a boss spawn at dead center of the screen? (Assuming position is fixed) ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

I'm beginning to get the impression people normally make all bosses bullet hell up the wazoo. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

Yeah. As you can probably see from the reg date, I'm actually from a much older generation of Fraxy shipbuilders.
Also, holy crap, you're in my home city. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

Ok... Transferred my Fraxy game to a new computer, but for some reason, it seems to run very choppily on my new computer; there seems to be a FPS cap of 39, which is making it very hard to properly fight Bullet Hell bosses.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to remedy this? This is on a very high-power Windows 7 Machine. ED: Oh, well that's just great. It seems to only show up when I play at higher resolutions. Hooray! I can play fast when I can't see shit! ED2: Welp, I guess it's not too bad. Just takes a bit of time to get used to it. (Probably because the old comp lagged a lot when playing bullet-heavy enemies.) ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

A shot of an upcoming boss: The Magician. He's an Anthropomorphic mech that throws around spell-like attacks. As a random bonus, there is now this: ...You might be wondering why there's a Spore creation over there. Well, If you look at it from above: Seem familar? Can be downloaded and seen here. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |

Thing is, most of the cores seemed to have a grace period during which the core is blowing up to perform last-minute events. With the Small Core, though, there is no explosion period; the thing just blows up.
Setting the event to run at very low health values would not work that well; it would be very easy for something like, say, a charge blaster, to push the health value over the edge and flat out kill the target without the proper event actually running. ____________________ --Bluhman-- |
