Now that I'm not doing 70-hour weeks, I'm free to do some hacking again.

Just a simple assembly hack for AW2.

Hmm, despite the 4th has well passed and I'm not American I'll just say that I spent my July 4th doing a chemistry exam. :o

Hm. Were there any superbosses in CT like, let's say Shinryu from FFV or the upgraded version of Omega in the GBA port of the same game?

The only one was defeating Lavos in the first encounter. He's notably stronger then than he is at the endgame.

That mario hack is rather spiffy looking, but I think the Koopa Troopa palettes are awful...in all honesty they need some black or something and I'm straining a little to see it against the background.

Hmm, my results came out a few days ago.

Chemistry III - 83, Distinction
Chemical Applications III - 75, Distinction.

Kinda pissed off about the Chem 3, just short of a High Distinction. That being said those are some pretty nice results regardless. (Over here 50-60% is considered an entirely average and expected grade for Uni).

Eh, I dunno about anyone else but the result of Nintendo's E3 was about what I expected. They've done Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Pokemon for the DS and Wii already so no surprises that they didn't have a showing. Just some interesting stuff that I don't care too deeply about.

Well, as far as general difficulty tuning goes, here's my small pieces of advice.

-If you can't finish it yourself without freeze states without dying it's probably too hard (As you know your levels, areas, changes better than anyone else possibly can at this stage). If you're struggling through with game overs it's way too hard.

-Get a sibling/friend/acmlmer/etc. who isn't good at the game you've based it upon or is just generally not that good at games. See how effective they are - that should give you an idea about the top end of the difficulty and other things like whether they need an unintentionally large amount of prior knowledge to even pass the game.

-It's probably easier to start with a base level of easiness and make it harder rather than having something hard and making it easier.

-More people will play a game that's too easy than one that's too hard.

Hrm, what I've been into lately:

Wario Land: Shake It - This game is awesome, I love it There needed to be a polished new Wario Platformer for years.
Bomberman Blast - Fun and customisable, be much better if i could get online play to happen. ;
LostWinds - Looked interesting, seems fun.
Team Fortress 2 - Although I'm always playing this on and off.

Seriously though, Wario is Ace.

Easier, but not necessarily better. "Good" complexity requires a certain amount of thinking in the "planning" time segment of level design and I doubt that many elements of it - puzzles, necessary preparation and foresight on the player's behalf, hints rooted in the design of the level (like a certain formation of coins always being found in the proximity of doors, and indicating the proximity of a hidden one at some point - though this is an example I pulled out of my rear end pretty much ) - can be added in later with acceptable effects easily.

Mm, indeed. To design interesting things there will always be a degree of complexity that is required and adds natural difficulty regardless of any other factors.

I was just speaking from a pure difficulty, rather than quality standpoint.

Can it take into account the time zone settings? It's not a big deal or anything but being colourful red at 3am and deep blue in the height of sunshine local time seems to bug me, as that's how it functioned on the older incarnations.

I kind of agree, but at the same time, why is it that 95% of the ROM hacking community just happens to fall into that supposed minority of people who don't have high speed internet? It's suspicious is what it is.

An internet devoted to computing, in a sense, and there are so many people with dialup. Meanwhile, no other forums I frequent, which span from general interest to design to whatever, have I ever heard anyone complain about still being on dialup. Yet here I hear it all the time! Anyway.

It's obvious. People here are too poor to afford good internet and new games so they just remake their old ones.

Also for what it's worth, I personally found it very hard to use pictures to show off changes of turn based games that were mechanic related - videos were much easier.

I really like what you've done with the gfx. It reminds me of.....Chrono Trigger.

This one is my favorite!

I swear I've seen that background in another game, but I can't pick it. :/

Also, looks absolutely fantastic. My only comment is that some of the ground graphics look very "flat" while the other half looks more three dimensional which bothers me a tad.

But all in all, I see you've been working hard from when I last saw it ages ago!

To be fair, I bought the Japanese version at release. The japanese in it is basically primary school stuff so I had far less issues than playing Fire Emblem - Radiant Dawn in all Japanese (I understood the gist of what was going on, but god I had a headache after a while).

But it's worth playing if you like Wario methinks.

I live in Adelaide, Australia. If I never moved it would be reasonable to expect that I would never see snow during the course of my entire life.

Gets cold a touch in winter though. Actually have to wear pants instead of shorts.

Nah, I don't care about the rocks in the dirt. More the fact that the grass/dirt/ground to open space barrier on some of those screens looks two dimensional compared to the other ones that look three dimensionalish.

I'd agree with the 3rd instalment part too. Yellow was fine, Crystal was poor, Emerald I didn't get, Platinum actually is better than Diamond and Pearl if you ask me.

SAY WHAT?

Crystal was the best.

The problem with Crystal is that it slowed down an already painfully slow game. I think the only ones that are slower as far as the actual game goes were DP. But as far as actual gameplay goes, I think they did a lot of nice touches to improve the game all around. I'm kinda sad that the battery of my Silver and Crystal carts died a painful death, though.

Eh, there's a couple of games that I'd like to sink my teeth into.

SNES
-Illusion of Time/Gaia (If just to make that Red Jewel at the start of the game less frustrating. Then I imagine I'd aim for a remix of the dungeons or something. Then maybe go and fix up the grammar in the game ).

GBA
-Advance Wars 2 (I hack this almost exclusively, I just don't have the time at the moment to finish my total conversion hack I've been working on)
-Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land (Figure it'd be easier than attempting to slash through the compression of the NES/SNES games and I've got GBA flashcard = play hack on TV)

DS
-Advance Wars Days of Ruin (FIddle around with new AW mechanics? Damn straight. I've already made some bits and pieces for it, but you could do a lot with it. Especially as if both people have the same ROM hack, it works on Nintendo Wifi)

You are a weird little bastard for not eating cereal with milk. I can't stand cereal with no milk.

It's been ages since I've eaten cereal with milk. It's just too convenient not to eat it in a cup.

You can still have Milk with your cereal in a cup, you know.

As for me, usually it's fruit. Sometimes it's yoghurt.
