Oh.
It's just a lot of information to take in. You'll get it. It's odd, but it seems like there doesn't have to be a plant in the pipe for you to get hurt as you are coming up. I just took another quick look at the document and while I can get a general understanding of all that is being said, I can't actually apply any of it since I don't have the SMB1 stuff in front of me... |

I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago: Aren't all of the exiting pipes in the original game the same height?
I took a closer look at DahrkDaiz's awesome document and I found this: y position (always 0x0E) So by the sounds of it, you can only have one common height for exiting pipes. Since you made the exiting pipes taller, that's more than likely the error. If that's the case, you have to reset the heights for the exiting pipes back to their original values. Again, I'm really not the person to ask about this. If Googie, Insectduel, or another skilled SMB1 hacker is around and offers to take the time, they could more than likely explain and/or troubleshoot the possible problem(s) a lot better than me just making a lucky guess, so maybe you could try asking them nicely. {Quick Curly's Motto: If it doesn't work, BLOW IT UP!!!!!} |

Really? Neat. I'm glad that it worked.
Yeah, I just played the hack last night and I already forget. Brain fart... I'll replay through it and make some notes. Did you plan on placing exiting pipes for the sake of appearance so that you don't appear in thin air in cases where there is no exiting pipe at all like in 1-2 as well? Oh, well. Off to do that then... P.S. I'm officially on vacation now, by the way. |

That's cool. Thanks, Kawa.
Updated findings: Exiting Pipes 1-2: Floats up into thin air. 2-1: Floats up into thin air. 2-2: (See below.) 3-1: Floats up into thin air. Do you have plants in some pipes in 2-2? If you do, they aren't visible. Plus if you go down the pipe in the first image, you appear as shown in the second image. You don't come out of the pipe or the ground - you're just left standing there. If you fall down the pit as shown in the first image, you'll appear in the underground area that you would go to if you went down the appropriate pipe as shown in the second image. Aw, look at the cute fish... WHAT THE HECK?! IT'S A KOOPA!!! |

Yeah, I recall that. There's a vine in 3-1 as well that will take you up to a bonus area, and I tested it and it works properly. Other times if you fall down the pit in the cloud areas, you'll just get sent back to the beginning of the level. I think why I got sent to the underground area is because I first entered the pipe before I tried dropping down into the pit this time around. It seems like different enemies behave/appear differently in areas that they usually aren't placed in, similar to the plants in the water level being invisible. |

Really? Odd. I never actually did test the warp out myself since I was playing through all the levels and thus skipping warps. Why/how exactly can it not be accessed? |

I'll check it out as soon as I can, but I have to take a break to eat first. What if you tried moving the block away and seeing if things work properly then? Just make sure you jump on top when you have the chance a little earlier on in the level.
Hopefully I'll be back in a bit. |

I see what you were talking about now.
If you run along the top, the screen stops moving and you're stuck. If you take the bottom route, the screen will continue moving when you reach that area. You can then break through the brick to reach the top of the level and run to Steve's Warp Shack. I went through the pipe and got warped to 5-1 as well. So the issues are that you cannot reach the warp pipe by running along the top, and for some reason the "8" appears in the warp area as well. Any ideas, anyone? |

I know about the Minus World trick in 1-2 and I've seen videos of other people doing it as well, but I don't recall seeing the 8 in those cases. It has been a while though so I've pretty much forgotten the details...
As I was working my way up to 4-2 to test that out though, I found a couple more pipe cases to add to the list: 4-1: Floats up into thin air. 4-2: Floats up into thin air. |

Graphic cut-offs... palettes... cookies?
You didn't mention this in the list of planned changes, but have you thought about changing the music as well? |

The Comprehensive Guide to SMB1 Music Hacking by Dr. Floppy will teach you what you need to know when it comes to SMB1 music hacking. Yay!
Do you have a hex editor like WindHex32 or even the hex editor that is in the FCEUXD emulator? With it, you can access the necessary parts of the ROM for proper editing. With FCEUXD, you can make changes and apply them to the game as it is running in the emulator, and you don't have to save them unless you want to keep them! So if the game crashes or you make changes that you don't want to keep, you can just Undo those changes or close and reload the game and start from scratch. So when editing the music, change some values in the FCEUXD hex editor and listen to what the music sounds like and go from there. |

Well the question is how you want your "Nuthead" character to appear. You're probably going to have to provide some kind of description so that whoever is willing to help you with the graphics can actually develop some kind of image to go by. |
