I saw it yesterday.... And you can put your fears to rest. It was fucking awesome.

Contrary to reports earlier in this thread, it does NOT retcon out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze. Nor, unfortunately, does it retcon out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.

Though, the specific events of those movies aren't very specifically mentioned either. Shredder is dead. This is narrated to you before the movie even really begins. Near the end of the movie we briefly see a trophy room of sorts where Splinter is keeping (among other things) Shredder's helmet, the broken canister of ooze, and the time scepter. That's as specific as the references get.

The turtles are back to their first-movie seriousness. Well, except Mikey, but that should come as no shock. Leo's constantly trying to keep his brothers (particularly Raph) under control and be the good leader Splinter expects him to be. Raph is hot-headed and rebellious and wants to do things his own way. Donnie's smart.

They aren't constantly making corny jokes (except for Mikey), they aren't constantly saying "dude" or other such terms (except for Mikey), and I don't recall there being any particular references to any of them (except for Mikey) eating pizza. It is very, very much a return to the Mirage comics roots (which is what made the first movie so great).

The plot is also great. The following paragraph may be considered as containing spoilers, but it's all pretty well laid out within the first ten minutes of the movie.

Spoiler:
It's been years since their last adventure together. Leo's been traveling the world, training. Mikey's been working kid's birthday parties (wearing a big turtle head mask). Don's been working tech support. And Raph's returned to his vigilante ways, wearing some body armor which disguises him well enough that nobody manages to realize it's him.

As for the bad guy(s)... It's really not clear for most of the movie who really is the badguy(s). There's basically three forces going about, apart from the Turtles.

There's the Foot clan, currently lead by Karai (Ziyi Zhang).

There's the thirteen monsters, whose origins are explained at the beginning of the movie.

And there's Max Winters (Patrick Stewart) and the uh... "forces" he's put together to capture the monsters.

I'm not going to tell you who's really bad and who's really not.

Anyway, when you get to the basics, this movie is good for the same reason other comic-based movies have been good recently. It takes the material seriously. Go watch it. It's definitely worth the price of admission.

Oh I wanted to read that long post about the movie sooo bad, but I'm gonna go see it tonight. Hopefully there won't be too many annoying kids in the theater when I go.

Yeah, some idiot brought their two or three year old when I went to see it

Posted by Sgraff87
So it is good huh?

I wouldn't be able to tell by the advertisements.

Yeah, advertisements have a way of making even the best movies look terrible. Or sometimes the reverse. In either case, they aren't a good quality indicator.

I don't think that's the best statement to make. It is marketed to children. And you saw it in a public place. If you don't want to see it with kids go to the latest showing.

You italicized the wrong word, friend. It is marketed to children. Not toddlers. Only idiots bring toddlers to the movie theater. They are not going to enjoy the movie. They are just going to be upset that you're making them sit still for a couple hours.

I made it.

More accurately, I made this animated gif from a short flash loop that I also made for the purposes of turning into a screen saver which mimics the one seen on Washu's computer in the eighth episode of Tenchi Muyo (first episode of OVA2), "Hello Baby."

I made the screen saver nearly two years ago, and it has been my screen saver ever since.

I have a dozen or so nephews and neices I help raise (Yeah, I have a big family, it sucks). One of the younger kids, albert, he's 2 or something, is completely engulfed when he sees spongebob on TV, when a young kid sees what they want to see, they'll sit there and watch it until a commercial is on, or its over. Every kid is different, but toddlers are defenitely capable of sitting and shutting up and watching a film for a few hours.

less talk about accidental pregnancies, moar talk about green ninjas plz.

Alright, alright, whatever. I was less annoyed by the parent bringing the kid than I was by them not leaving (or at least taking the kid to the theater's lobby) when the kid was obviously (and loudly) not happy about being there.

I'll be the first to admit that the vast majority of Olympic video games have sucked royal balls, but they've always been serious, true-to-life type of stuff. The majority of serious, true-to-life type of sports games suck, in my opinion.

This should be more along the lines of the other Mario sports games, which have not sucked. In fact, they've made me appreciate sports that I would have otherwise had no interest in (like tennis).

It's being developed by SEGA's sport games team, but with Miyamoto in charge. Sonic Team isn't involved, which should help avoid the high level of suck they've been putting out lately.

Also, Matt over at IGN mentioned in his blog that the game will have online play, but it's not clear where he got that information.

FYI: Splinter's voice in this movie is Mako. He died before the movie's release.

Personally, I didn't mind the raspy-ness. I was happy to have someone who is actually Japanese voicing him for once.

My computer came with a 5.1 speaker setup.

I never use it unless I'm showing somebody else something.

I buy the headsets (you know, headphones with a mic) that they have at Walmart here because they have a ridiculously long cord. I can walk almost all the way to the opposite corner of my room with them on. Sometimes I even wear them to bed so I can listen to music while I try to sleep, but that tends to cause them to break sooner.

First thing, I have to say it, Dragonball is decent. For its genre, anyway. It's DBZ that falls into the "blah" category, and GT just plain sucks.

Ignoring that bit of argument... Let's see, what have people already said that I can comment on?

Hare + Guu

(AKA Jungle wo Itsumo Hare nochi Guu)
Also Jungle wo Itsumo Hare nochi Guu DELUXE
And Jungle wo Itsumo Hare nochi Guu FINAL

On the matter of things which haven't been mentioned (or haven't been mentioned clearly enough):

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Welcome to the NHK
FLCL
Azumanga Daioh
Genshiken
Love Hina (but avoid the dub like the plague)
└Love Hina Christmas Special
└Love Hina Spring Special
└Love Hina Again
Mahou Sensei Negima!
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Outlaw Star
Pani Poni Dash
Rozen Maiden
└Rozen Maiden Traumend
└Rozen Maiden Overture
Shakugan no Shana

Also, I know a lot of people will disagree with me on this one, but.... Tenchi Muyo.
At least the original/main continuity.

To be clear on what I mean by that last statement... Tenchi Muyo was originally conceived by a man named Kajishima Masaki. The anime company AIC decided to turn it into an anime, with Kajishima Masaki in charge.

They made two OVA series, which did pretty well, so they then decided to turn it into a TV series, with a completely different continuity, and without Kajishima Masaki's involvement. Then they made a couple movies, another TV series, and then a third movie. All without Kajishima Masaki.

Then, fairly recently, they made a third OVA series, continuing from the original, as well as a TV series set in the same continuity but focusing on different characters, and they put Kajishima Masaki in charge of these.

To be fair, I'm not sure if it was AIC who made the decision not to involve Kajishima Masaki in alot of the stuff, or if Kajishima Masaki decided not to bother with them since they weren't going to be set in his Tenchi reality. In either case, the quality of the Tenchi works that Kajishima Masaki did not work on is lower than that of those he did, partly because the Tenchi universe is quite large and many things had not yet, and still haven't, been revealed. But enough of that rant, I'm going to break down the Tenchi material below so you know what to watch and what to maybe not watch.

Main/original Kajishima Masaki Tenchi continuity (The good stuff, this is the list I'm recommending):
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 1&2 (released by Pioneer/Geneon as "Tenchi Muyo")
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki OVA 3 (released by FUNimation as "Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki")
Tenchi Muyo! GXP

Other stuff (ranging from "blah" to fairly decent/good), with the "└" things linking continuities (I'm not really recommending this stuff):
Tenchi Muyo! TV (released by Pioneer/Geneon as "Tenchi Universe"
└Tenchi Muyo! in Love (released by P/G as "Tenchi the Movie")
└Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2 - Distant Memories (released by P/G as "Tenchi Forever")
Tenchi Muyo! Midsummer's Eve (released by P/G as "Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness")
Shin Tenchi Muyo! (released by P/G as "Tenchi in Tokyo")
The Mihoshi Special
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (OVA)
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy TV (released by P/G as "Magical Project S")

And keep in mind that if you watched any of the Tenchi stuff on Cartoon Network more than half a decade ago, that it was fairly cut down (for both content and time), and your memories are likely to have the continuities mixed up a bit.

Oh, and since you mentioned you like "Neon Genesis Evangelion," you should give "DUAL! Parallel Trouble Adventure" a try. It's like NGE if NGE were made by Kajishima Masaki and wasn't a paranoid, emo drama-fest. I wouldn't really call it a parody, more like a light-hearted tribute of sorts.

I actually plan to attend my first con this year, AnimeFest in Dallas, Labor Day weekend.

Because of my natural, brown afro, I plan on cosplaying as the very character whose name has become my nickname with my anime club friends... Nabeshin from Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy, Nerima Daikon Brothers, and a couple cameos in episode 16 of Eyeshield 21. I already have the blue shirt and red jacket, I just need to find a solid yellow tie, a decent belt (I have belts, but they're all D-links), and probably some jeans without cargo pockets (all of mine have them because I like to carry lots of stuff).
