The civilization series is the best. I'm currently playing with a really simple mod on Civ IV, called Better AI. I've heard of the problems with DS [Lite] shoulder buttons. Dust and dirt get on the contacts for those buttons, then make it hard to use them.
You can either take it in to someplace that will try to fix it for you, or open it up and clean the contacts yourself. Actually, I just wind up finding some game to play. I've been playing Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I'm also known to dive into a game of Phantasy Star IV or Civilization IV every once in a while. I also program, mostly in C++ or Visual Basic. But that tends to bore me more than kill the boredom.
