How much control do you have over the system in OSX? Is there a lot of DRM, restrictions that can't be bypassed (e.g. Windows' "cannot delete this file because some dumb program forgot to close it" errors), etc?

It's a UNIX. Well, I'll be more specific: Mac OS X is based on the Mach kernel and is derived from the BSD implementation of Unix in NEXTSTEP.

You have lots of control over the system. Lots. If you know a bit of Unix stuff you can do many many things.

I don't have any problems with DRM (I've not purchased any protected iTunes media and everything else I have works fine) and I've not encountered a restriction that cannot be bypassed -- only some that require an Administrator password (think a bit like a "sudo") to actually complete.

Some things are a bit irritating sure (the general use of the Finder comes to mind) but some things are irritating about Windows and Linux too.

Each to their own I suppose. I very much like OS X, and I don't miss the "Start Menu" at all, or think it is necessary to a user interface.

Mac OS X is ver fast on this mac too, wheeeeeeeee!

HD crashes are the reason I RAID all my PC's.

I have a new computer now too. My iBook died, so I upgraded to a MacBook Pro.

Why are you procrastinating? The key to movtivating yourself might lie in why you are procrastinating in the first place.

If you're doing it because the task seems too big, break it up into smaller pieces. Write down dot points first of what you'd like to write, then use those to form your sentences and paragraphs. Give yourself some breaks, and aim to finish a section every... hour.. or so?

I'm a mac user.

I would like to say that there's no viruses cause it's too hard, but that's a lie.

The reason there aren't many viruses for Mac is pretty much the same as why there aren't many viruses for Linux. Most of the viruses in either case are either proof-of-concept viruses that never went anywhere, just proved a point -- or viruses that don't spread because a virus has to work a lot harder on a UNIX system to get anywhere.

"Virus requires your administrative password..."

Anyway, seriously, just use what the fuck you want and stop saying "this is better lol, so this must mean I'm cooler".
But I am cooler. I am fucking awesome.

I am awesome and so is my Mac. You're all just jealous you can't be as cool as me.

See, I'm not a gamer so Mac's lack of games really doesn't worry me.

The things I do use (graphics and internet tools) are on Mac, and there are many excellent open source programs that I use on the Mac platform, many of which I find much nicer to use than similar open-source or freeware applications on Windows.

I use both Windows and Mac though of course. I even support Windows every day in a full time job, which is actually one of the reasons I really appreciate my Macintosh. After spending all day fixing people's broken PCs, it's very relieving to go home to my lovely Macintoshes. I don't have to mess around with anything I don't want to... they "just work".

Ah. Your "DOCALE" is something my ex used to do a lot. He'd type his name as "BEn". When I get the occasional irritating message from him, I've modified it to come up as "WAnker". He's usually blocked but occasionally manages to sign on with an account I've forgotten or that doesn't use blocking properly.

I refer to lots of things as "thingie", but I am not sure that's particularly unusual. I also use some rhyming slang for things on occasion but again that's not particularly unusual either.

Better to just get the Mac and dual boot it to Windows or Ubuntu or whatever you like.

There are no guarantees with the stability of Mac OS X on systems it is not supposed to run on. You'd be silly to install it to something else and expect reliability.

At least if you get the Macintosh you know Mac OS X is going to run properly. And Windows runs very well too. Haven't tried Vista on a Mac yet (haven't got Vista) but I hear that runs reasonably well too (aside from the general complaints I've heard about Vista right now that are usual for a new Microsoft OS..... yes, I remember it was like this when XP came out too...)

About swearing, if the person I'm talking to does, I tell him to stop swearing (by saying: "You swore!" or something like that).

I know that you're young, but this is an INCREDIBLY annoying and obnoxious thing to do. I highly suggest you don't do it in the fucking future. If they swore, its pretty obvious that they knew what they did, and they obviously didn't care.

As for me. I swear. A lot. A fucking lot.

I swear. I also like to tell people not to swear.

But that's usually more like "Don't fucking swear! You don't hear me going around, saying fuck this, fuck that, fucking swearing all the time..."

I'm also funny about the word "arse" / "ass". Specifically I prefer the British / Australian spelling -- arse -- and the pronunciation that comes with it

But Nick, Taryn and Jen are the top three that would be likely to be plastered on any given day.

Wanna bet?
...Nah, alcoholism isn't funny.

Anyone's partner done something fucked up whilst drunk?
...Yeah. That's why I hate my girlfriend drinking.

Alcoholism -- as in an addiction / mental illness -- is not funny.

But sometimes someone just has a few too many and yes, that *can* be quite funny. (within reason)

And I'm not plastered on any given day. But I do drink a few times a week -- but not a lot. A beer or two on the weekend, some red wine at dinner with Mum. It's unlikely you'll get incoherent gibberish out of me anymore.

Heck, even when I did used to post blind drunk I still managed to type out coherent sentences and most people didn't notice until I TOLD them I was drunk.

Worst I think I ever did to myself was cut my thumb on a glass once. Deep. Did some minor nerve damage.

I couldn't feel parts of my thumb for nearly a year.

Still scarred.

At the moment, my problems with Vista are:

* interface is ugly (I doubt this one will go away)

* system is still unstable, etc. It will be like that until the first Service Pack I guess, like XP was back in the day. There's poor support with drivers and whatnot which is pretty much the same thing I saw back when XP came out anyway

* interface is quite different, enough to cause problems for end users who are not very adaptable when it comes to IT. Things like that cause problems for me.

* It's still Windows underneath (I honestly got "over" Windows in 2003, when I first ran screaming to Linux to save me, then Mac OS X)

Anyone who whines about drivers and uses Linux needs to be shot, though (wasn't i tjust recently they finally supported Wi-Fi, and even then only certain cards?)

There's been support for wireless on Linux for years, just some cards have better support than others.

Posted by Xkeeper
and Macs never have that problem because 99% of a Mac is propitary Apple shit.

Well, at least you understand why Macs "just work".

It's wonderful and something I like over both Linux and Windows. Little to no unnecessary fucking about, it just fucking works.

That and the interface is consistent... which is something that I hope Microsoft have at least learned by now...(but it didn't really look that way)
