To blackhole89 (or anyone else that knows about the SMW and SMAS music formats): Is the tempo conversion below accurate?

SMW tempo + 1 = SMAS tempo

The best way I could think of to find that out would be making a series of tones that are, say, 100 N-SPC ticks apart, set both to the same tempo in SMW and SMAS, play it back, record and measure the time between two tones with something like Audacity. The SMW format document says that a tick in SMW is 512/[tempo] ms long.

edit: fixed broken quotation

oldest post of mine I could find (I was there during incarnation1, but there's a roughly four month gap in the board's memory... could also be I am one of the yet-unnamed numbered users)
Apparently, it got cut off at some point... most of Archive2's DB seems to be fucked in the one way or other. I thought for a moment I actually asked something stupid like what it appears to be, but I never omitted punctuation in board postings back then, plus some other posts of mine have more obvious cutoffs at the end.

Yeah, it sounds like either your browser doesn't pick the right encoding (ShiftJIS), the fonts are not installed or a combination of both.

If you have to use an automatical translator for Japanese, I strongly recommend against Google and Babelfish - excite translation is far superior (even though, as some guys in that Japanese forum's SMW hacking thread pointed out correctly a while back, no automatic translator will translate 2ch slang for you). I'd provide a more accurate translation if required, but... must...work...on...assignment...*dies*

Other than that, I think somebody should invite Carol over here. We could use that kind of know-how.

I have to object. To give you a little bit of an introduction of Acmlmboard database design,

There are two tables, "posts" and "posts_text". "posts" contains an ID, the thread ID, timestamp and the like; "posts_text" contains, again, the ID and the contents of the post. The reasons for this system being introduced are very obscure, since, up to the point where I used this split to implement post editing in an actually meaningful way, each "posts" entry was mapped to exactly one "posts_text" entry, forcing the user to span one more table in the query, thus adding a lot of unnecessary overhead to retrieving posts.

Now, it was quite natural to add some kind of actual purpose to that system; this was, to a sufficient extent, done by keeping the "posts" table as a key to the posts while pooling all data that is referenced in "posts_text". You could comparing this to having a block of memory and a set of pointers pointing to the locations the data you look for is at, which is known to be a sufficiently efficient system.

As for Xkeeper's solution, it would involve creating a second table where, essentially, the same kind of data is stored. It would not only retain the lack of point in the posts/posts_text system but also further unnecessarily complicate the database design. The way you propose would be not a thought through change - it would be a hack. Sure, it would be more simple for you to implement. People followed that thought pattern before - Jesper did, you did, most of those who messed with the 1.x series did - that was one of the main reasons why it, in the end, was abandoned.

On another note, I have come to hear that you removed Ailure's moderator status for his support of my proposal in this thread. From how it looks, you are seeking to further signalize how you will deal with criticism of your positions or support of opposing ones. In fact, I am very positive that, if it wasn't for my status as the server hoster giving me a bit of safety, this very post would get me banned. It seems like, when all else fails, populism and chilling effects is how you seek to back yourself up.

I am very incontent with the way you have been leading this community lately.

This is exactly what your solution to this revolves around. Adding a new table for the previous revisions is pointless, adds to the database "brokenness" but is the way of least coding effort and closest to just "adding some hooks" as the old code would remain unchanged.

[citation needed]

Other than that, one word from you suffices and I'll revert every line of code I have ever written for this board. It probably won't take more than 30 minutes, so if you are actually as discontent with what I did as you are saying rather than just willing to inflate your ego, it is, in fact, what I recommend you to do.

Since things like this have proven useful in the past...

[code]...[/code] now yields
template <class T> class CLookupTable {
private:
T **tbl;
int max_alloc;
public:
CLookupTable() { tbl=(T**)malloc(4); max_alloc=1; *tbl=(T*)0; }

// find a free spot for a new T* to add and return the new ID
int Set(T *x)
{
for(int i=0;i<max_alloc;++i)
{
if(tbl[i]==(T*)0)
{
tbl[i]=x;
return i;
}
}
tbl=(T**)realloc(tbl,4*max_alloc+4);
tbl[max_alloc] = x;
++max_alloc;
return (max_alloc-1);
}
}

There's a number of limitations to this right now - for instance, it does not bypass wordfilters, emoticons or other code tags; I hope to get this fixed soon though.

Syntax highlighting might be an option too if there is demand for it. Also, if you run into any problems with this, tell me.

As for switching the frame to <code>, this will require some themechanging work, so I'll leave that for tomorrow...

I am very positive that Nintendo didn't want us to work on their games either.

If it was any other kind of distribution limitation, I'd probably say it would be ethical to indeed cease using it, but I somehow can't warm up for supporting this kind of blatant nationalism in any way. Nationality is a horrible concept.

After actually bothering to transcode the non-autotranslated part of the readme file from ShiftJIS (curse you vernacular encodings D: ), the whole thing gets a little bit of a different look... apparently, the author
- thinks that his ability level is still low, considers this a work-in-progress and would be embarassed to show this to too many people
- hardly knows English at all and would not be able to provide support to English speakers
- says his 2channel-based hacking group does not want the Japanese hacks to become "too famous" outside Japan(from following the discussion there myself, though, I must come to the conclusion that far from all people in that community hold that opinion)
- won't mind a public release once he got better at English and spriting

The original, UTF8ified text:

In the light of that, I am tempted to revise my previously stated opinion in favour of a state of neutrality. On the other hand, of course, Darkdata has sorts of a valid point there. (though I personally still think the separate hacking groups should not try to keep their results concealed from the others)

Any particular reason why you did that? What Google Translation produced for you is entirely unintelligible unless you know both English and Japanese and have a certain amount of hacking skills just to draw the connection. -.-

To those it may concern, apparently, demo 7 of it is out now.

related blog post of the developer
download it here (enter "mario_kai" without the quotation marks in the (password) text box to the left of the "download" button)

So far, all I noticed were some palette fixes, but there might be more to see further into the game...

If I recall correctly, SMW's ending music, due to its length or for whatever other reasons, was put into a song bank of its own, which would make it inaccessible without a bit of asmery.

Actually, I could think of a way (use regexps to convert groups of successive spaces into a single normal space and a series of non-breaking ones following them), but it would obsolete the formatting using
 currently used.
