changing the font repeatedly, modifying font sizes of *spaces* and ensuring that every em dash was exactly as it should be (instead of a hyphen!)

em dash's suck.

Why?

In some cases they are the correct thing to use. Like with a time period, i.e. Monday—Friday
A hyphen is the right thing for a double-barrelled surname, i.e. Baron Haden-Guest

because they're too long and un-needed. monday - friday works fine, or monday through friday works even better.

they could've used that ascii spot for something more useful like a penis or a turtle

When writing recreationally then sure, an em dash doesn't matter. There's no point fussing over an em dash for posting on a forum, for example

But if you are writing professionally—for the web or for a job application or for print, particularly if it is for some kind of important presentation—you are better to use em dashes than hyphens

Posted by Xkeeper
Whatever happened to just using "--"?

That came into place as a way of typists indicating an em dash when your character set wouldn't produce one.

If it was in a manuscript, when it went to print a -- would be changed to a — by the printers.

Do you have a copy of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style, by any chance, Tarale?

No, and I'm not particularly good with grammar. Writing is not my forté

I tend to read more about typography and then make my poor writing at least look pretty

yeah... those all looked the same to me... but maybe because I'm on my Ubuntu box and it might not have the fonts?

It won't have the fonts.

But I'm surprised it doesn't have Georgia. It's supposed to be a web standard font -- so you can get it I think pretty easily anyway

Georgia and Verdana (among others) were designed by Microsoft, which may be why they tend to be missing from Linux distributions. Which sucks, as websites tend to look really bad with whatever default fint the system decided to substitute in.

I know that, they were both designed by Matthew Carter too, and are both specialist screen fonts. I <3 the pair of them.

But what I was saying is that as Core Web Fonts -- there are free ways of getting them.

As for forte / Forté .. well, I like Forté. I guess it may have something to do with how my music teacher pronounced it / it was written on sheet music.

EDIT: Smart Package of Core Fonts -- for all your free Core Web Font RPM package needs.

I'm currently annoyed with Firefox.

It rendered bad code properly, causing me to attribute IE's failure to render said code as an "IE bug"

It was not an IE bug.

I am not sure I have much of a "style".

I try to make paragraphs (and sentences) short and easy to read. However, if a topic is difficult I can tend to "waffle" a bit. I break things up as much as possible to try to make things easy to read. I avoid posting a "wall of text".

Depending on the topic at hand the length of my posts varies.

I like smilies.

Mine comes from a segment on The Chaser's War on Everything called "What have we learned from Current Affairs this week?". They were discussing "Youth Gone Wild" and this was one of the terms that came up discussing teenaged girls.

Because it was already a Syndrome, I added the ++ stuff to be silly.

It's hard to get a decent photo of "my room" (har har, they're ALL my room here), but easier to get photos of other places around my home.

So, here it is: My Place

Note: "crazyman.jpg" is not taken at my place, but the crazy man visits a lot and assembled the futon

My bedroom is basically that, and a queen sized bed (which you can see the edge of....)

You can see what's on the shelf? Anyway, I'm sure you don't want everything on it. The fly spray for example, I don't think you want.

And Postal indeed is really cool. <3

I came here via the Final Fantasy VII Citadel many years ago.

That's.... pretty much it. I used to hang out in Modern Art a lot more.

Haven't had them for a while.

Fail because Evangelion fails.

Boo. Evangelion doesn't fail. The movie does though.

I am going to think of pistachios next time I watch that damned movie now.

Hm. That's a very superficial look at Evangelion. Yeah, I guess on the surface it does look like a bunch of giant robots fighting and some religious symbolism thrown in to scare the kiddies. Underneath it's not about giant robots or fighting or religious symbols, but psychology. It deals very heavily with themes of depression, loneliness, abandonment, rejection, etc.

Course, the psychological stuff is a huge turn off for a lot of people, so I don't expect everyone to like it. But I wouldn't say it is "fail", and I wouldn't say it's simply a superficial shounen story.

*cough*

Anyway... pistachios. Pistachios good. I once had a weird turkish ice cream with pistachios... it was stretchy.

G'day Elmo!

Good to see you here. I was wondering where you were, but yes... I guess it's hard to work out where this place is really now

Good to see you made it. So, how was Silent Hill?

height: 100%;
perhaps?
IE has a bug though where that will be relative to its parent element if positioned absolutely, so if the parent element isn't 100% height then neither will that element be...

I don't know, I'm a bit confused and I'd like an example.

It's funny. Both "nuts" mentioned in this thread aren't technically botanical nuts. Both the pistachio and the cashew are seeds.

But they're "nuts" in the culinary sense. And my favourite "nuts" at that.

Don't worry, that was a farely general description of what happens, and I honestly don't even percieve it as true.
Hell, episodes 18-??? seem to be the "My name is Al and I'm emo" show anyway. Still fun to watch.

Oh, right, nuts. Yeah pistachios own, but I generally only get them around Christmas. Not sure why.

I would guess because they are expensive, therefore you get them at Christmas as a treat. A tend to eat a lot of fancier, expensive things at Christmas time (mmm crayfish)

Last I looked, pistachios were quite a bit more expensive than cashews. And cashews are pricey themselves.
