I have a friend named Jan. It's pronounced "yawn". He's Polish.

Your name's not pronounced "yo" is it?

Well, J is pronounced Y in some languages, including Polish as well as Czech, German, Swedish, and so on. I'm guessing joe is with the English J sound in this case though.

Or you know, it could be like the J in Spanish, sounding like an h (jalapeño).

Or the J in French, similar to English but softer, more like the s in vision.

No, Really....

"Dar-ark" would make one assume that it's two syllables.

And seriously... Who pronounces "data" as "daa-tah"? "Day-tah" just sounds better. in my opinion

[in reply to Kernal] ... Ghf. *slaps forehead*

Or the kh in Arabic, similar to choking on your own phlegm.

</sarcasm>

No, it's English. Sorry to ruin your fun.

I rhyme the first syllable with cat. I just think it sounds better that way, I guess.

Officer Palumbo: What kind of name is that anyhow? Kumar? What is that five o's or two u's?
Kumar: No, it's actually one "u".
Officer Palumbo: Yeah... bullshit.

Mine couldn't get any easier. Sparks. As in electric sparks. Is there any way I could possibly even break it down into syllable-like parts?

しりゅ [ɕiɺ̠iɯ] I don't think it's right but whatever.

It's more like shi (like in yoshi) and ryu. The "r" sounds like a weak r and the y and u sound similar as in spanish (a bit different, but there are many sites about phonetics around)

Mat-triz-zull

The i sound in the second syllable is short. I usually leave out the 87, which I added just because I wanted to change my username for the new board. My sister suggested that I use the last two digits of my birth year, so I went with that.
