The Ubuntu team released their latest version today. Just got it installed myself, and it's by far the most impressive Linux distro I've ever run. Also, it would be a great distro to get familiar with linux if you ever wanted to.
You can download it at their site, www.ubuntu.com, don't know how many are interested, but I thought I'd just give it a little shot here, as I expect a few will be interested. ____________________ |

I'd be interested in running something like Ubuntu, but I'm curious as to what the limitations are. I.e. would my NIC run with it, would my external Hard Drive work with it, CD burner, etc. These are the main reservations I have about installing linux. A friend of mine has said that either Ubuntu or... something other popular distro had fairly good hardware support. ____________________ Zelda Hacking Forum hobbies: delectatio morosa |

Nearly all the newer distros have good hardware support these days... that is if it is newer hardware.
If you want to check if they work, you could check www.ubuntuforums.org, search for your hardware and see the problems others have had with it, you can also download the iso and run the live cd without installing, and then see if the live cd recognizes the said devices. ____________________ |

I've been running Ubuntu for the longest time. I beta tested Feisty.. and I wasn't happy. But it WAS beta. I reverted back to Edgy for the meanwhile. I'll boot into Edgy and upgrade it to Feisty tonight and see what I think. Thanks for the heads up, Black Lord. |

Have they made any significant improvements with regards to hardware support? I was plagued with problems with it not supporting various devices last I used it. |

I think the support has gotten a lot better... mostly because it supports proprietary drivers right out of the gate, so if your device doesn't have any open source drivers (or has open source drivers but they're not worth a crap). I don't know exactly how well there driver support has come along, but I definitely had less troubles installing Ubuntu, all my hardware is recognized right off the bat, where as with a fresh Windows install, I have to go driver hunting. ____________________ |

Guess I give it a try later. Right now I'm waiting on a torrent to finish, but after that's done I probably give it a try.
I used ubuntu a bit, but I made the mistake of using the badly supported AMD64 version. And it was my last CD-R... I get the X86 version this time around. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I wouldn't even think about trying this on my laptop with previous experiences of how well my choice of hardware is supported.. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

That's because nothing supports laptop hardware, really.
I tried running Edgy off the liveCD on my mom's laptop, and it seemed to work okay, except for the part where it didn't have any wireless networking support, which made it completely useless. |

Actually, they fixed the wireless network support, and it works...
It worked before, it was just difficult to set up, and keep set up... but now, on my laptop, and as far as I've heard, other laptops, wireless support works like a charm. If you don't believe, you could try just booting up the LiveCD, and see if it does. ____________________ |

That it starts as liveCD is really nice anyway.
Because it's a easy way to check if the distro would work with your computer or not. Would been more annoying to go through repartitioning and installing to only see that your hardware isn't supported. :/ ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

All live distros I've tried hung at startup when they tried to load the Lappy's PCMCIA. I have to use boot params to make 'em skip. And sound's off too.

Yeah, you told me that "The sound never works".
From what I heard, you can usually get it to work after some manual setup... but the point of ubuntu is that you're supposed to avoid doing stuff manually. Since hardware support is apparently improved, it dosen't hurt to try. I'm going to try running it on my laptop first even. (and I know that last ubuntu dosen't work on it, classmates tried with same model) ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I used to use Ubuntu for a while. It didn't really like my ATI card, but then again, I've done distro hopping, and most of them were the same way. It's not a bad distro IMO, but I switched to Arch Linux because I like to tweak sometimes.
I also keep windows around for when I don't feel like tweaking. I don't like messing around with Wine to get windows games working. ____________________ What sig? I don't have a sig. |

I've heard tons of good things about this distro, actually. If I wasn't so satisfied with the Knoppix installation I have now, I'd probably check it out.
Last time I checked out Ubuntu, it was using Gnome as its window manager, which instantly caused me to switch back to Knoppix. Some time later I decided to look into Kubuntu because I like KDE so much, but I got the AMD64 edition, which didn't seem to work out so well. I don't remember anything specific, but I remember being filled with immense rage and switching back to Knoppix yet again. !? Not sure why I ranted about that. Maybe I'll get this for some people I know that currently are using Windows ME. With an OS like that, it shouldn't be hard to turn them over to the "dark side." Anyone know how dial-up works on here or do I have to look for myself? (I'm lazy, but I'll do it if I have to.) |
