I am driving home from work yesterday. It's after 5pm, when traffic is a real bitch. I tend to try to avoid the back-ups and the highway, so I'll take different routes to find which one is better, with less cars. So I find such a route and this is my third time taking it. I'm driving and I come to an intersection. Its right in front of a mall, so the traffic isn't that bad, not like a normal intersection anyway. The light is red. I'm in the middle lane, the only car in that lane. There's a car to my right, also stopped. Then I hear it. Brakes. Trying extremely hard to stop. I have no idea where it is coming from, all I do is brace myself, knowing that something bad is about to happen. I look over and in the left lane next to me a car, still trying to break, flies past me, I can smell the rubber from his tires. Unable to stop, he goes right through the intersection, somehow missing the cars that were turning.

He had to have been doing at least 50 MPH. I'm just happy that he wasn't driving behind me and that he didn't hit anyone while driving through the intersection.

Synopsis: People are either stupid, bad drivers, or both

Does anyone here have any really great crashing stories? The best I have is me spinning out and doing a 360 in the rain, but I was only going ~25mph and the only thing i hit was the guard railing.

I've been in about 6 car accidents myself, most of them being a passenger while my mother was driving and all under the age of 17.

A school buss came inches away from cutting through my head or at least shattering the window.

Another time a truck hit us on the driver's side, almost making us tip/roll over.

I was visiting my parents and riding my bike around in the warm weather. I'm ready to cross the biggest street in town (all of 2 lanes plus a shared left-turn lane) at the only traffic light within 15 km. I have the walk signal and I see no traffic. Then, as I'm crossing the street, a couple of like 14-year-old girls (the driving age is really low in Michigan, especially in rural areas where you can start driving at 13 and get a license at 14; in cities I think it's 14/15 or 15/16) in a white car suddenly make a super-fast left turn out of nowhere without looking. My brakes didn't work very well at the time (a steep hill near my apartment tends to kill them quickly). They brake, but they run into the very front of my front wheel. I'm not hurt, but they start laughing at me like "Don't you know how to stop?" and a nearby group of skater punks starts laughing too. It was humiliating.

The road is a scary place sometimes. On August 1st, 2002 I think I cheated death when my friend was stupidly driving 100mph down a gravel road and flipped his Mom's Malibu. The car was totaled. We came out with minor scratches, and the cops said we should be dead. Very scary. I still have the occasional flashback. I've been in about four accidents, none of which were my fault!

That's why I'm a huge stickler for seat belts. I don't let anyone ride with me unless they have it on.

I was only in a car accident involving two automobiles once, and that was when the idiot behind us bumped into us, but nothing was damaged. My dad has been in a few though, his truck is all banged up from them and he once lost a mirror on his old car to an accident. He was never hurt, just his vehicles.

Worst personal: About three years ago, I was driving down the hill on I-74 going towards Peoria over the bridge at 60MPH. There was some road construction being done so I began to brake a little bit when all of a sudden my hood flies up into my face. Got a few glass shard nicks out of it. I pulled to the side (I was on left in a 2-way, pulled right with mirrors) and took a look at the damage. The windshield was totaled, and was one of those large 600 dollar windshields to fix, if you did it. The top of the car was dented in from the oversized hood and the hood itself was crumpled to crap. I walked a mile or so for a phone. No one asked if I needed a ride.

Worst involved in: This was probably one of the weirder ones I've ever seen. If you didn't know, I've been biking to work recently because my vehicle was in the shop getting fixed. Well, I was going downhill to bike down to my apartment and, all of a sudden, I hear someone ramp over a speed bump on the hill HARD. I mean they must've been pushing about 40 in it and you're not really supposed to hit these things past 15, they're that big. I turn my head and there's this car that comes careening toward me honking and the only thing I said was 'fuckohshit' and I dive off with my bike to the right side, where I'm running off my bike and my bike crashes somewhere into the sidewalk. Guy throttles past, missed me (thankfully) and goes down the hill towards the square where the office is and where it dead ends into a court. He passed by several people playing basketball, who all dived off to the side, ramps the median and goes right into the woods. I should take a picture of it, it still exists since it happened recently and there's a large gape into the woods from what he left when he rolled. His car was destroyed; he was lucky to survive. Apparently his brakes failed and he was ramping things left and right (was probably up on something too, meth and pot is big locally) and he didn't have sense enough to engage the emergency brake. That was an interesting call to 911 that I've done twice since I've been here and have never had to in my life before I moved here. Oh well.

If your brakes are failing, chances are your emergency brake is out too. My friend had the same problem.

I figured that might have been a possibility, but the possibility of anyone in this town being on something while driving is equal. :\

I lost the brakes on my bike when I was 16 or so. I was riding around with two of my male friends when we wanted to jump a speed bump. I've done that several times before, so it was no big deal. I jumped and for some reason, I stopped a few feet after doing so, I guess to watch my friend do it. Well, before I had a chance to turn around, he hits me from behind and I flip over my handle bars and on to the road. Did not have a scratch on me, but my grape soda did spill over my leg...which they thought was blood at first.

The worst I've been in was when I broke my arm at two months old. A truck ran a stop sign and nailed us.

The worst I remember was when my friends and I were driving back from Minnesota and my friend fell asleep at the wheel. I was asleep too in the front passenger seat, and I wake up to "ANDY! ANDY! OH SHIT! -- BAM!"

And the best one that I was driving for was when I did a 270 in my car in the rain. I managed to spin out through the intersection while turning left, not hit anything, then back up into the lane. I ended up facing the opposite way of where I wanted to go, but hey, no harm no foul.

I've had several close calls.

1. This could have been *really* bad.
I was driving to my parents house, and to get there you have to go through an industrial part of Phoenix. I was coming up on train tracks (500 feet), hearing a strange rumbling sound. I figured it was the processing plant to my right, and kept going. I got up to about 20 feet away doing 40 and this motherfucking TRAIN darts out from between 2 buildings! There was no horn, no flashing lights and barricade. Just me shitting my asshole out in complete horror. I got through alright, but there was some damage to my tires from swerving and then slamming my brakes at the light just ahead.

2. Rear-ender
I was up in the mountains at the time, working for an extermination company (I expressed extreme concern for the condition of the brakes, and 2 months of hounding and bitching later, nothing was done) and a good friend. There was this dumb fuck indian driving an old Ford F-100. I was coming up on him, on a green light. For some reason, he was going slow, so I tapped my brakes a little. Instead of speeding up, like I thought he was going to, (It's a green light, fuckface) he slammed on his brakes like a dumb shit. I would have had plenty of time to stop, but the brakes were bad and they slipped. I just slammed right into him. The first thing I did was call the cops, and then I handed the indian my boss's business card. Nobody was hurt. (This isn't really a close call, because it was just an indian.)

3. Close Call
I was on a highway in Phoenix where the traffic was moderate. Up ahead looked just fine, no slowdowns or anything, so I thought that was a good time to pick up my phone that I had dropped earlier. Apparently, while I was grabbing my phone, an accident happened right in front of me, (like 400 feet) and when I came back up, I saw that the dude right in front of me had stopped while I was doing 75. With about 100 feet left, I was barely able to veer off to the right and avoid hitting him.

4. Lightning!?
Driving home from work one night, there was a pretty bad thunder/rainstorm (In Arizona!?) tearing up the place. My window didn't go all the way up, so I was getting huge amounts of rain inside. With that freaking me out, I continued onwards to turn onto the onramp, when this bolt of lightning strikes not 25 feet from me. In the middle of my turn, I freaked the fuck out and slammed into a mile marker on the corner. Could have been a lot worse? Fucking understatement. Though, I am lucky that I came out of that only needing to get a new fender and a change of pants.

FYI, inside your car is actually one of the safest places to be during a thunderstorm. If it hits the car it will usually just go course through the frame of the car and not damage anything.

Crazy Maniac in a White Campervan
-I was driving back home from school one hot summer afternoon, my air conditioner was broke and I was getting pissed. This guy in front of me didn't have mirrors and for some reason his liscense plate had a black garbage bag around it.
He stopped at the green lights and when I tried to pass him, he looked back and got in front, then stomped the brakes. I got to the side of him and gave him a dirty look, he was laughing at me and said, "Hey charro! You want to race man? C'mon bitch!" He stopped several times in the downward offramp into the lower level of the highway. Then he stopped in the middle of the highway, not yielding to traffic and almost got me sandwiched in between a car screeching behind me! I sped out and the fucker tried to get me into a barricade. He drove right next to me and said, "What!? What!? What!?" and did a "c'mon" gesture like from a kung fu movie. This was the only time I was glad there was a gravel truck. Once I got near that truck, they stopped.

this winter(when i started learning to drive) it snowed pretty badly one morning, about a foot or more had piled up. since it was early in the day not all the roads were plowed and my dad wanted me to drive through it to see what it was like. i drove around the city some and got on the freeway. there weren't many cars besides one or two. we were all traveling though the middle of the road at about 20 mph, since we couldn't actually SEE the road, just where the snow isn't piled up as much. about a minute while i'm driving, some hummer a few cars behind me is obviously in a big hurry. he decides that since he is a hummer he can go 80 mph in the snow without trouble. he drove to the left by all of us, sloshing snow and shit all over the side of my truck, some even blocking my sight and passes back over to the middle... but he keeps passing. looking to my right a few second later, i see a hummer tipped over in a ditch. what a dumbass.

An elderly woman old bitch backed into us at a gas station. Get this -- she was going at TWO MILES PER HOUR. ... Not even a scratch. She should've at least checked things out, or say "sorry".

... Yeah, there's no excitement in my car-life.

I've never been in an accident, I guess I'm lucky, although I've had to pass by way too many. Seriously, why does a wreck and the police talking to a guy draw so much attention? Just keep driving so we people who don't need to see the stupid wreck can get on with our lives as soon as possible. And yes, I must agree with Hyper, KP. Racism = bad.
