Given that I have no other choice for internet access, I was wondering if the 1 second + delay between sending and receiving signals will kill me on games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XI.
Other concern would be Dawn of War. I have no real experience with latency, since I'm used to a cable provider. I also have no idea how I'm going to meet the download limit (Fair Access Policy ) so I'm a little worried. I haven't gotten it yet, afraid of that 12 month contract, but I was wondering if anyone had some insight that might help. |

Satillite is the crappiest you can have for online play. Infact some alternatives of broadband is actually worse than dial-up for online gameplay. Before I had ADSL, we had a wireless connection... which was fine expect that it was laggy in nature due to the signal not always being too reliable and therefore me losing packets because of it. I'm not sure what type of crap people have for dial-up, but in my case the ping time on my ADSL and on my dial-up didn't differ too much really.
In some cases over 200 ms ping is bad in online gaming. Anything more than that is... even worse. But it depends on the game and how it's designed, some games are affected more than others. ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

I know FFXI caps at 56k connection speed (practically everything is stored client side), so I can use dial-up for that.
If I had DSL as an option, I'd jump over that, but I'm nearly an hour away from the closest real city. |

If you're planning on doing any "real gaming", sattelite is your worst option. You're probably looking at latency times >1000ms.
Dialup beats that, at least. ____________________ I dealt with it. |

You also forgot to mention there will be some days when you just cannot get a signal. This sucks and I really recommend dial-up over satellite. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

So dial up gaming, wooo.
Oh well, I'm sure it can't be to long for a better option to appear. |

Posted by Xkeeper My best latency on 56K was around 190ms on my best connect of 49.2kbps (which translated to 5.66K down and 3K up). My 26.4 can get around 200-400 at worst. Satellite does tend to suck unless you have the newer dual LNB connections that split their connections for upload and download on each seperate LNB and have very good upload on top of their download. The only problem is the service, as far as I know, currently goes around 100-120 bucks a month for the first 15 months if you don't pay 400 up front. I'd rather wait for DSL. |

Posted by Koitenshin +∞And high solar flare activities would also make Satellite broadband quite interesting as well. :p ____________________ AIM: gamefreak1337, MSN: Emil_sim@spray.se, XMPP: ailure@xmpp.kafuka.org

Yes it would, luckily I've never had to use Satellite during high magnetic interference. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Well, there is no doubt that for general surfing purposes (and by that I mean downloading), I'm better off with satellite being sorta-okish than with dial-up. I mean, it's shitty that a company is offering a crappy service for a high price just because there is no competition, but I can afford it. I can deal with it, and I can be a total prick if something does come up better.
When Verizon Wireless covers more with that new... EVDO-whatever thing, and I can get that, I'll jump service. Honestly a contract won't mean anything if I change banks and then cancel. |

Satellite is a joke, both TV and Internet. |
