My. God.

In case you haven't heard by now, there was a school shooting today at Virginia Tech University. A gunman entered the West Ambler-Johnson Hall and proceeded to kill one and would two others. Police responded to the scene. Two hours later, in Norris Hall, the gunmen killed at least 20 and wounded at least as many. The gunmen is now deceased.

More info:
CNN.com
FOXNews.com
Also, you can turn on CNN or FOXNews for constant coverage.

My God, I was going down there in 4 days to visit the campus!

I can't believe this happened... They are saying this is worse than Columbine. Is anyone on this board at VTech? Are they ok?

Update: Now 32 are dead, I'm not sure the number of wounded. The VT President should be having a news conference as I type this.

Just by the counts, it's worse than Columbine by a good margin. Columbine was 15 dead/24 injured (based on Wikipedia); this is 22 dead/20+ injured.

I'm there. Was nowhere near what happened, though.

(This has been an exciting year. There was that escaped convict at the start of the year, two bomb threats, the most recent being last Friday, and now this.)

My cousin goes to the school apparently. My dad was just calling around to see if she was alright..its pretty messed up when this kind of thing happens. There was no motive or anything? The guy just...did it? Meh ;\

I give it three days until they find something like Liero or an ancient copy of Counterstrike on the gunman's home computer and say he did it because of the violent video games/an unlucky childhood/any combination of both.

That's what it seems. I've had CNN on for a while but heard nothing of a motive.

Shit. 20 killed and 20 injured is not a small number. That's really trajic.

Hopefully there will be some indication of what caused someone to attempt to kill 40 people indescrminately. Perhaps some sense can be made of it

Up to 29 dead, 17 injured. ABC's story said there were multiple shootings, and it could've had something to do with an off-campus incident. Also, sounds like there were bomb threats a few days ago.

Seriously, what the fuck.

Correction: 32 killed. At last count.

I honestly prefer to think there's no reason for why he did it. It's a lot easier to live with knowing that people snap and do things like that rather than actually sit down and think "Okay, I'm going to kill a few dozen people..."

32? *sigh* This pretty much blows. No word from my family either, though I'm SURE we would have heard something if anything serious had happened to one of our own. The whole situation really sucks though, it just...makes you wonder why things like this have to happen ;\

It's about the same thought process of someone not wanting to go to sleep after a long stressful day of work.

They'd rather have six lines.

It's just an alternative thought process that tends to have the worst consequences. The guy probably didn't have much to live for and someone, not necessarily that school, probably broke whatever will he had, if any and he just decided to light up two dozen and a half people.

Not like people that act that way are supposed to be understood. That's why they're dubbed 'crazy'.

I'm the opposite.

I'm thankful we have tight gun regulations here.

I wonder why education facilities attracts those kind of terrors too. You don't hear it happening to a office as often...

I hear about it happening way more in the workplace. There were 3 office shootings in the past month that I can think of in the news. It's just when it's a school and it's big it gets a lot of attention for some reason. Schools also have laxer security.

And I don't really want a gun, b/c there's only a million percentage chance I'd ever need it. They're too dangerous to be taken lightly. But in a situation like this where some nutcase has a shotgun, what can you really do?

Actualy, there was a pretty big thing involving an office shooting some years back here in the states. I can't remember where it was or anything like that, but I distinctly remember it happening. Plus schools are a target because a lot of times these people are younger and tend to target their peers who they feel tormet them/don't understand them/whatever have you. Pretty sad ;\

At VT? Or in general? Columbine comes to mind of course.

In August, someone escaped from one of the Montgomery County police departments (jails? he was in custody, one way or another), shot a deputy, and fled on campus. He was apprehended without harming anyone here, though, as far as I can tell.
