INSERT A GIANT PICTURE OF DOG SHIT HERE

This game is bad. REALLY BAD. I will let my IRC talkage describe it.

[12:04:41] <Sonicandtails> man
[12:04:47] <Sonicandtails> yoshis island ds
[12:04:50] <Sonicandtails> just makes me sad
[12:04:52] <Sonicandtails> i cant even play 1-2
[12:04:58] <Sonicandtails> i have started that level 6 times in the past month
[12:04:59] <Sonicandtails> and
[12:05:03] <Sonicandtails> i just get so depressed at it
[12:05:17] <Sonicandtails> the music kills the mood, the controlls are sliperry, and yoshis legs are fat as hell

[12:24:42] <Sonicandtails> what
[12:24:44] <Sonicandtails> the fuck
[12:24:44] <Sonicandtails> is this
[12:24:51] <Sonicandtails> Im riding in a kangaroo pouch
[12:24:54] <Sonicandtails> in YOSHIS FUCKING ISLAND
[12:25:02] <Sonicandtails> THERE ARE NO KANGAROOS IN YOSHIS ISLAND
[12:25:14] <Sonicandtails> This is utter trash
[12:25:19] <Sonicandtails> They ruined Yoshis Island
[12:25:22] <Sonicandtails> I want my money back

[12:31:07] <Phoenix_Yoshi> You think that's bad? Wait until World 5!
[12:31:44] <Phoenix_Yoshi> That world is freaking HARD. Even more so if you try to go for 100 Points on all the levels.
[12:32:01] <Phoenix_Yoshi> That 100-point thing is what's stopping me from finishing World 5-1...
[12:32:27] <Sonicandtails> Phoenix_Yoshi: I cannot even play 1-4. Its just so stupid. They took Yoshis Island, kept all the same enemies, fucked with the graphics, and then took a shit in a tooba and said THIS IS MUSIC!
[12:32:43] <Sonicandtails> I am so depressed playing this hunk of shit, I will never get past world 1
[12:32:44] <Phoenix_Yoshi> You have a point there.
[12:32:58] <Sonicandtails> I am so glad I downloaded it
[12:33:28] <Sonicandtails> I was actually thinking of BUYING it before I got my flash cart
[12:33:57] <Phoenix_Yoshi> I dislike their choice of underground/castle music to the extreme. It doesn't even sound like you're in a dark place where caution is advised... But no, they want Yoshi's Island DS to sound as happy and cheery as possible...

[12:34:02] <Sonicandtails> Seriously, let alone a few parts, the entire game of YIDS could be replicated on YI for SNES and be 10x better
[12:34:14] <Sonicandtails> Augh
[12:34:16] <Phoenix_Yoshi> They did a MUCH better job with the original YI on the SNES.
[12:34:59] <Sonicandtails> I could right now make a YI hack that is YIDS, without the extra shit like the giant tap tap rolling twords you and the 'new and improved but piss you off spinner platforms"
[12:35:23] <Sonicandtails> This is why Nintendo shouldnt let second parties develop their games

[12:36:37] <Sonicandtails> And what is this bullshit with the screens
[12:36:42] <Sonicandtails> Half the time I cannot even see Yoshi
[12:36:47] <Sonicandtails> Hes stuck between the two screens
[12:37:03] <Sonicandtails> And timing that jump? FORGET IT! With new and improved TWO INCHES OF SPACE, you will miss every single one!

------

So yea. This game is bad.
Graphics: Bad. They took YI SNES and tried to emulate its graphics, failing in the end.
2/10, the rolling rocks and such aren't as broken as they used to be on the SNES, so I guess thats a plus. And there was this huge tap tap that rolls around at one point, that was neat to I guess.

Sound: BAD. Very BAD. No rhythm, no memorable tune, nothing. The music is happy no matter where you are. And by happy I mean, 4 little taps on a xylophone and a few bad tooba sounds and the song repeats. Thats happy in everyones book. 1/10 Where the fuck is Kazumi Totaka when you need him? Oh that's right, sticking his secret song in to random games, how could I forget.

Gameplay: Also bad. Yoshi is very slippery, there are these new blocks that only certain babies can hit, and everything else is stolen straight out of YI SNES, which is bad. 3/10

Replayability: None. You won't want to get 100% from what I've heard, the game is really hard near the end. 3/10

Overall: It sucks. Don't buy it. I'm glad I didn't. If you have some whacked out rental store near you that actually has DS games to rent, rent it, but even then, I wouldn't waste the $5-$7.

-------

Oh yea. Forgot to mention, even though its in the irc part.

WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE KANGAROOS THAT FLY IN THIS GAME?!

Yoshi's Island really isn't that bad.
It has some good platforming elements, the multiple babies add the the complexity of the levels and make you think, and really, I kinda liked the island music in that game. Bosses are really easy, but that should be expected.
Christ, dude. You're making it seem as bad as Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest.
So it doesn't live up to Yoshi's Island. And? It's still not that bad of a game.
I think you're trying to compare a great game to an "alright" game, your expectations of it being raised by the joy of the first Yoshi's Island.

My younger sister owns the game, and while she loves it (bear in mind she's 8 and would't know better), I always knew from the start this game would be gimmicky as hell.

Direct sprite rips from the SNES game, sprite recolors (the Bowser sprite is an NSMB recolor, WTF?), plus a gimmicky storyline that makes absolutly no sense in the context of any other Mario game to date...yeah, okay, awesome. They made a sequal to YI what, 10 years later? Doesn't seem like TOO big of an attempt to cash in on the name. Nope.

Just because the sequel to a game is released many years after it's prequel doesn't mean it's a bad idea. (Mother 3 comes to mind)

The game really isn't that bad, but a good amount of people I know hate it.

I see varied reviews about this game. Seems like fans of the old game tends to shun it the most. << Some reviewers said it was a good game, but lacked originality as there wasn't really that much new.

Well, just so you know, I actually like the game really well.... I mean, sure, Yoshi's Island is an island, but think about this: SO ARE ALL THE CONTINENTS. Well, except Asia, Africa (it's technically connected to Asia), and Europe. But all three of those make up the same land mass, which is one huge island. My point is, islands can have diverse ecosystems. I actually LIKE the fact that YIDS has "gritty" areas. It's a nice contrast for the lush, green island we all know (and maybe love). Plus, it's a game. Whoever said games had to make any sense whatsoever?
That said, I think it's a really good game. It's probably right there near the original YI on the SNES. Sure, the levels are pretty easy near the start, but whoo boy, they get hard at World 5. Which is actually good, because I like hard things. Hey, when I get a game these days, I get REALLY disappointed most of the time, because the game ends up being SO easy, I can clear it within just a very few days. I'd rather play a game where it's hard for me to progress much in the story (whether it be hard puzzles, hard enemies, or a REALLY long string of side quests) and it just gets harder and harder and harder. I mean, take a look at Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. I got that game one day (I think it was around 3:00 or so when I got it...), and when I got home, it was around 8:00 or 9:00 when I beat the final boss. L-a-m-e. The game was waaaay too easy with the Tornado ability.... My point HERE is, games these days are getting easier because a: Nintendo thinks that certain Japan-only games (like SMB2J and Treasure of the Rudras) are "too hard" for American audiences. Now, with the Wii out, it's like the new trend is, "Oh, let's make all our games easier so EVERYONE can play them! ". No, Nintendo. That's not how you do it.

So yeah. World 5 of YIDS is a welcome change for me. Now if only the REST of the worlds took that difficulty and SLOWLY lowered it LITTLE BY LITTLE going down the Worlds.... Maybe THEN the game would be even better for me. But alas, first Worlds are always easy. That... I condone. After all, why SHOULDN'T first worlds be easy?

So there's my 2 cents. Sorry for that little rant I made...

The game was so meh I'll never touch it again. I'd rather play Starfox Command than this. Bert Bros. my ass. Why don't they just take the same game, music, graphics, and make new levels and bosses based on actual enemies being experimented on by Kamek. Priscilla the Peckish sucks ungodly.

I would have to agree. I liked the addition of a hidden coin in each level because I like that sort of thing (just like DK coins) but other than that I didn't really like this game. Everything you said describes it. The music was 500 times worse than the last game and the levels just weren't fun to play. I got it for Christmas and I haven't touched it since late December.

I've beaten it once and I don't have the urge to ever get a perfect score on all of the levels. Why? Most of the levels are a pain in the ass to get 100 points because you don't have that +20 star item to get you the extra few points you need at the end of the level. In the later levels, I finished most of the levels with only 10 star points because I got hit frequently and there weren't that many '?' clouds with 5 stars in them.

If there is one level I hate in this game, it is 5-5. Here's why.

1. It's a ripoff of 6-5 from the original Yoshi's Island which was called "The Very Loooooong Cave". I hated 6-5 a lot from the original one and I hate this one even more.
2. Auto-scrolling.
3. Those damn Chomps from 5-1 are in here too.
4. A lot of Skeleton Goonies drop a bunch of torpedoes on you. There's very little room to avoid them because most of the level either had lava or a bottomless pit.
5. The first wind section of the level was annoying. First, you didn't even know if it was there if you are playing this for the first time. I usually use Baby Mario a lot so I didn't know about the wind section when I first played it until it was too late.
6. There is less enemy generators in this level than in the original game. What makes this worse is that you needed the eggs in Yoshi Island DS. In Yoshi's Island, I had 6 eggs throughout most of the level because you rarely needed it.
7. It's much longer than 6-5.

That's why I don't want to replay the game with a perfect score with levels such as that.

Yes, I do have to agree the music was craptastic. Good thing I keep the volume on mute to begin with because I can't stand 5 different babies crying when you get hit.

Phoenix Yoshi: How the fuck can you say that YIDS is up there with the original? What you are saying is that the music is up there with the original which is bullshit. You even said the underground/castle music was awful. It's nowhere near as good as the original.

This is my 1st and only Yoshi game that I have ever played. I enjoyed it a lot at first and then I got stuck somewhere and went to another game. Since I got the game for free anyway, I really didn't care to beat it or not, but I don't think the game was that bad.

Also, I have another thing to add...

You say you hate the game because it's too much like the original, but worse. Yet you also complain because they added something new that wasn't in the original... So which do you hate? You can't hate both- It makes no sense. And before you go all, "IT DOES MAKE SENSE!", let me explain...

You hate the game because it uses too much of the same stuff from YI on SNES, only it does it worse.... But then you turn around and say that you ALSO hate it because it added in a Kangaroo? What do you want it to do, look EXACTLY like YI on the SNES so you can say it looks unoriginal?

Sorry if that's rude, but that's how I see it- You've got clashing reasons for why you hate it... and that's not a good thing...

I dislike the game because it feels like too much of a ripoff of YI. They pretty much ripped the graphics straight out of YI, made a few (bad) alterations here and there, threw in a bunch of crappy songs, and worst of all, they screwed around with Yoshi's sprite. Yoshi looks so much uglier now.

Yeah, I got the game for Christmas, played a few levels of it, and then moved on to something else. I'm not out of world 1 yet.

Eh, it's not that bad... OK, Ok, it's that bad. But your right, the sprites are horrable, the music was wayto cutie, and it was not as good as the origional.

Plus the final battle was just a rip off of the first.

Hey, don't flame me. It's the honest truth. I love this game SO much. The game does not stink one bit, to me. I enjoyed YI, and I sure as heck enjoy YIDS. This isn't a matter of truth, it's a matter of opinion. Remember, what one person thinks about something isn't always the same as what another person thinks. So... Thank you for NOT respecting my opinion. (Now if only I could remember how to get the stupid "mad" smilie to work... XD)

Edit: My bad, one of my sentences conveyed more of a "this is FACT" vibe instead of a "this is my opinion" one.... So, fixed...

People, please learn and understand what an opinion is.

Personally I didn't like Yoshi's Island all that much and I'm not compelled to pick this up.

You should try the original game one of those days though. I dare to say it's the best plat former even made. I have a feeling that some people overreact as YI didn't really meet their expections. :/ But I probably won't pick up this game

YIDS wasn't too bad, but I have no interest in getting 100 in all the levels. World 5 is hard enough, the Secret levels are rip your hair out hard, and the Extra levels (that I have played) make me want to pour gasoline onto my DS and throw it into my fireplace. Seriously ... the difficulty was too crazy to even attempt to get 100.

And what the hell is with 5-7? Was that some kind of cruel joke? Are you seriously supposed to be able to have 30 star points by the end of the last platform part?

The game was fun for a playthrough, but not for a perfection like the original was. I like difficulty, but they blew this one out of proportion.

And the music can go curl up and die somewhere

Yoshi's Island DS: I hate it.

I got it with my own money shortly after Christmas. I haven't played it since.

-The music sucks, really bad. Very bad. I can recall one good song -the jungle level- and even that wasn't necessarily a toe-tapper.
-They screwed with the game. The controls and gameplay in general isn't good at all.
-I'd rather play the GBA remake than this. This kills Yoshi's Island with a pistol.
