It's interesting at all that it only became PAL-released in France... (could be because the Japanese seem to absolutely love the French, they think they're super classy)

Well, is there in fact a Japanese original of that particular game? If so, wouldn't that be easier to translate from? My Japanese is rather better than my French too, and I imagine that this is a common state of affairs in the general ROM hacking community...

There is a Japanese version of the game, which is most likely superior, as butchering games during localization was a tradition back then. The main problem is finding capable people who care enough, as it's a pretty mediocre game. It's all looks.

Heh, black borders and slowdown was the norm back then...

Anyway, it's a beat 'em up, so it's not like you can't simply play the Japanese version. But if you're itching for a Sailor Moon beat 'em up, you should just play the arcade game instead, which is leagues and bounds above this one.

I found the font.

The game's text in the introductory biographies for the characters at least is a tilemap.

I also look at the rom address. 11C512

To understand the character values, let's say you want to write "a" for example.
you call the top tile using hex value 80
and continue drawing that tilemap's line of 8x8 tiles
then the line ends and you call the bottom tile using hex value 90
and so on.
Capitalized letters use 4 tiles, and accent characters get their top tiles elsewhere in the font.
The current font is compressed. You'll either need to avoid accents, use capital characters only (waste of space) or learn some assembly to load a replacement font or edit the original font.
I'm not aware if the game uses other fonts.
Or includes other text, either.
