My family's other computer is having a serious error. Oftentimes, whenever I or anyone else attempts to load a program, it doesn't open. From the start menu, it displays an error about not being able to paste files in this location. This is rather bad, and the problem is urgent- does anyone have any help? The computer is a Compaq Presario 6000 Pentium 4 running Windows XP Home Edition.

Sounds to me like a virus problem...

Can you load programs after booting into safe mode?

Compaq used to make good computers....now they have taken the same route as there competitors and substituted good parts with faulty memory, power supplies, and hard drives.

I agree, Compaqs are evil. Every single one I've ever used had numerous problems. And they design their cases so it's nearly impossible to upgrade them. I tried replacing the hard drive in my old Compaq, and I couldn't even get the old one out. The front part of the case wouldn't come off and it was blocking two of the screws.

Those are some of the biggest problems I had with my old HP. Funny, HP and Compaq merged a while ago.

Windows XP!? That explains everything right there. The best choice you have is to install Windows 2000 or at least in my own experience, Vista. Both of those are rock-solid when it comes to stability!

XP was the most BSOD ridden piece of garbage I ever had the misfortune of just knowing it's existance.

You've obviously never used 98 then. That would bluescreen if you breathed on it too hard.

Whoa, why the Hate-on? I've used all kinds of windows, and there were really only two BSODs I evefr got:

WinXP: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA stemming from a cooling problem. Replaced some fans and the PSU (Faulty Unit!), no BSODs since

Win98: Disk write error to C:/ - bad sectors on the HD. Scandisk + 1 hour = no BSODs.

Uh, because we did receive BSOD's?

I very rarely got them in XP, in fact, I can't even remember one BSOD in XP. Maybe theclaw's system setup included a program that would frequently bluescreen. With 98, I got them at least once a day sometimes.

Whenever I BSODed it was because of problems with my graphics or sound drivers, and that was barely ever, an update solved the problems each time. XP runs fine for me. Although speaking of hardware companies, yeah, they're all pretty much evil now. It seems the only way not to get screwed when buying a computer is to build it yourself.

Yeah, I get occasional BSODs in XP if I do something my craptastic graphic/sound hardware/drivers don't like. Win98 was decent too. Now, WinME...

I rarely have any problems with Windows XP. You should have seen the days when I had to use Windows 98....it was a fucking nightmare. Every time I would try to listen to music and dial up, I would get some OE Fatal Exception and then my screen would go completely black and I'd have to restart. And then there was this stupid exploit that Microsoft forgot to prevent involving C:\con\con.

If Windows XP is constantly giving you blue screens then you must have hardware issues (bad ram, failing hard drive, failing power supply, failing fan), or software issues (adware/spyware, bad drivers, ATI DRIVERS!!).

Dell, Compaq, and Gateway are all using cheap RAM, power supplies and hard drives. Cheap RAM is more likely to have weird issues, cheap power supplies can cause power fluxations that make everything else behave strangely, and the final killer is the cheap hard drives which have higher failure rates and can also result in instability.

I've only had 1 BSOD on XP.
Vista is crap. I'll wait a year for them to fix all the bugs, THEN get it.

My old HP had a 100-watt PSU. Seriously.

As for Vista, I'll give them a year or two to fix the bugs, wait for people to hack out the DRM, and then probably end up installing it even though I don't want to because XP will be out of date and there'll be yet another reason I can't get Linux to work.

This is what'll probably happen to me, I won't want to upgrade to Vista, but I'll be forced to, bleah.
