Course, I am doing no fucking rocking or fucking rolling...

GUITARS.

I have one now. It's a classical guitar, and I'm learning to play it kill songs I used to like. I've owned it less than a week and so far the casualties include Come As You Are and Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana, Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple and Fuck Her Gently by Tenacious D. I've also injured several chords, tortured GarageBand with my tuning, and made a dent in my pinky.

As I don't think this forum should just be about *showing* art / music / etc, I thought it would be nice to discuss guitars with y'all.

Who here plays guitar? What kind of guitar do you play, and how long have you been playing? Do you make your own music?

I play a classical guitar, I've been playing for 6 days, and I murder other people's music. You?

I like to think I can sing.

I have never seriously tested this theory, or tested it near ANYONE, but it's a little self-confidence thing I guess.

Apart from that, no musical talent whatsoever.

After playing Guitar Hero with some buddies (who don't do the ddr thing) I introduced them to the DDR version of Smoke (on the water) and they almost ran screaming.

Hey, an 'art thread' where I can actually contribute! I play various guitar-like instruments, i.e. electric and acoustic guitar, bass, mandolin, and bouzouki. Been playing for... eight years or so. On my electric I tend towards rock, both covers and original. On the acoustic side, I mainly play Irish traditional music.

I'd like to get into classical/flamenco playing too, if only for more techniques and skill to incorporate into my playing, but I've already got three guitars (electric, baritone electric, and acoustic) and I don't really have the money to drop on another.

I'm starting to mess around with my mom's classic guitar, and butchering any song I try to play Other than that, I think I can sing, done 8 years of piano, and basic trumpet.

I'm not sure that Guitar Hero counts as actual musical talent. It is however good to provide some inspiration to go play a real guitar or other musical instrument.

As for other musical instruments, I own a very lovely piano. I've not played it for years however, and when I did, I played the keyboard on it, owing to my mother not really getting things and sending me to keyboard lessons instead. I've always felt bad that I don't know how to play the piano proper.

One day when I have a more permanent home, I'll get the piano moved from my mother's house to mine and shall have a proper crack at it.

Aside from not having proper crack, cello playing is fun, I guess.

I've only been at the guitar for about 3 or 4 years (as opposed to the 8 or so I've been at the drums and keyboard), so you would imagine I'm not exactly spectacular. I own an electric, its a Fender Squire so really nothing to call home about, but I guess it gets the job done (and as I get better I'll probably purchase a better one). I recieved an Ibanez bass guitar for Christmas and have been absolutely loving it. I guess with a little practice I could be better at both.

I play mostly rock or metal-esque stuff with my guitar, though lately I've been seeing if I can follow along to some J-ROCK and J-POP songs. Music in generaly is really my life, I love to write my own songs. I do most of that via the piano/keyboard though lately I've been seeing what I can come up with via the guitar alone. I tend to come up with guitar parts to my songs in my head and work them out with the computer, then record them in afterwards. I'm hoping to make a career out of writing music some day. Music is truly the greatest gift I've ever been given, so in writing stuff, I'd like to be able to give a little bit back for others to enjoy as well

I can't do anything with GarageBand besides use it to tune my guitar.

I never did get the hang of computer music tools or computer video tools for that matter.

I've had a guitar for about a year. Every now and then I pick it up and try playing, but I haven't really got anywhere. I think it my "If first you don't succeed, get frustrated and give up", mentality. My main problem is holding down the frets, I don't have any problem when I go slow, but as soon as I try to speed up, I start getting dull thunks instead of notes.

Having this problem myself and I think it's all just practice really. I'm getting faster at some songs I "play" but new stuff I still revert to this incredibly slow thing...

If by "play guitar" you mean "would like to smack specific children over the fucking head with a guitar" yeah I'm down with that.

I have 0 musical talent

I have a piece of crap steel string guitar. I'm pretty good considering I've only played for like 3 months.

my guitar is hard as heck to tune, and hard to play. I have callouses, but the strings are so taught that it causes bruises on my fingertips every time I play.

Now that I've begun hanging out at a music shop with my friends (one plays guitar, the other plays bass, guitar, and etc) I realize how crappy mine is.

I really recommend getting either power tab (Here) or guitar pro (Here)

they are tab editors -- and many many popular songs are available to download for both of them. Power tab is free, guitar pro isn't. I have both.

Guitar pro also has a digital tuner (you need a microphone for your pc) and converts ascii text tabs to easy-to-read digital tabs.

Theres a $200 Johnson strat I want at the local music store. Problem is I have no $$$. Someone will probably get it before I do.

and BTW, Johnson is manufactured by Ibanez, so its a good quality guitar. Trust me, I've played it.

I currently rent a machine-made crappy classical guitar for $10 per six months.

It is not very good at all, but I'm learning pretty well on it, and I'd rather not have an expensive one to break by accident.

I can play a few songs from Mario, Megaman, and Sonic, and a small collection of 'real' classical music. The Mario theme always gets a laugh out of people when they ask what I can play.

I used to play a lot of piano on my awesome synthesizer before it died.

I write a lot of midi music, currently under the influence of WHOAMG ANVIL STUDIO IS RAWK. Mostly it's remixes of video game music, but I've written a few dozen originals, as well. Sadly, most of my collection died when my old computer did, as I didn't back it up enough.

So back up your stuff.

Really? There's actualy a lot of really straight-forward music software out there I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 (because all versions proceding this have a horrible GUI, imho) for 99% of my composing, its very simple and fun to fool with when you're just getting started. There's even simpler programs similar to that with less functionality that just about anyone can pick up. Its good to have at least a basic idea of some music fundamentals, though that's not really a prerequesite (it just helps in the long run)

Guitar? Not for me. It's sad, but I'm not coordinated enough to keep track of both my hands at once and get them to work together to make something that sounds good. That's why I play a brass intrument - only three fingers to keep track of.

Brass and wind instruments are of the few I've yet to really break in to. I think the whole alternate tuning thing would throw me off ;x Trumpet is a Bb instrument, right? Yeah, I have a hard enough time remembering what I'm supposed to transpose when I'm WRITING a trumpet part, let alone playing off one

Yes, trumpet is Bb.

I used to play Alto Sax in high school. It's halfway tempting to pull it out of the closet and do something on it, but... Inconvenient.

(That one's Eb. Makes Bb look simple to transpose by comparison.)
