We've been about 9 years overdue for a new Town Square thread, since the previous one was posted all the way back in 2009 and has increasingly come to resemble a sort of digital Forest of the Impaled. Shock and awe is fun, but maybe we can try something more more human-rights-compliant for a change.

In that spirit, let's talk casually. Remember, this is just an internet forum. There is no need to be upset.

@blackhole89 What is your opinion on freesync, is it needed or not ?

I'm not really experienced with high-end gaming, but from an engineering perspective, FreeSync sounds better (open standard, reusing available technology, etc.); to the extent ghosting is a problem (I think I have fundamentally slow eyes and so have never really experienced it with anything), the ball should be in the monitor-makers' court to fix it within the confines of that standard or come up with a better open replacement.

As for whether it's needed at all, well, I don't have it and feel fine. Random intermittent tearing has never bothered me, and I assumed that consistent tearing (like multiple frames in a row tearing around the same scanline) was an independently solved problem (i.e. something your engine's rendering governor should recognise and compensate for). I probably would make note of it as a favourable property if one configuration I considered buying had it but another didn't, but wouldn't go out of my way to shell out $100+ extra just to have it.

Hmm I thought as much I had upgraded my gpu to a Nvidia EVGA GTX 1050 SC edition last summer.
Amazon shot me in email with a $100 off discount on select freesync monitors for 3 months.
So from last july till now they are high and most of them don't suit my needs currently.
I was reading this last week coming home from work and some people swear by it:
https://www.techspot.com/community/topics/using-freesync-with-nvidia-gpus-how-well-does-it-work.251446/

My sanyo 32inch tv has a busted sound board and sanyo customer service told me the warrenty was up in august.
So I am in the market of getting a good freesync monitor by acer or go with the LG led tv at 32-40 inch size.

An admin account was compromised, with some minor mischief caused (trashed all stickies, banned all admins, edited the points of required attention). Let me know if anything important is missing or you can't get into your account (email in that case).

I wonder, is it me, or login is broken?

I enter my credentials correctly, and says I will be redirected, but seems like my session isn't kept as I return to the main board as if I didn't logged in (I need it to access PMs)

I can only post since the board allows per-reply validation.

I would blame this boards code for that, just to make sure the problem isn't in one browser only.
Try different ones, mainly firefox, chrome, and microsoft edge.

Yeah. Just tried on Chrome. It works. On Firefox it breaks. Sigh... didn't want to use chrome, but w/e

Are these supposed to be in the bin?

Your Face
Desktop thread
Server move

Also, the lack of activity pains me... was there any particular event that led to it?

Technically not, but the threads in question were so extremely stale that they might as well stay in the bin at this point. (Feel free to create new ones!)

I don't think there was any one event that resulted in the community thinning out to the current extent. We just went through repeated splits, while fewer and fewer people use standalone forums (as opposed to modern discovery-friendly platforms like Reddit or Discord). The generation that was raised on SNES is reaching an age bracket where people probably have jobs and kids of their own, and ROM hacking for newer consoles never quite took off because 3D is messy and machine-optimised assembly is gross.

So COVID lockdown restrictions start to be lifted where I am today... and I also got a smartphone finally from the shop.

I'm actually very glad that I managed to weather the coronapocalypse in the US; we've only ever had minimal restrictions where I am, whereas Europe (especially the continent) seems to be dysfunctional.

(Can't you buy smartphones online, though?)

Couldn't in that circumstance. Hadn't a device that could access the internet.

...aaaaand we're back up. There were some issues with the server that I couldn't set aside a day to fix for a whole month. Let's hope that this fix will last.

I did a round of sweeping and added a little roadblock that will hopefully at least prevent some of the "Indian datacenter" style spammers from signing up while I was at it.

Good job!

I'd also like to ask about the Uploader as it is not available. Will the files in there ever be recovered?

I'll look into it. I actually don't remember if I deliberately disabled it for some security reason or another, because if not, something about its database must have broken...
