At a few places, I've changed my password to gibberish and logged out so I wasn't tempted to return. But yeah, I tend to forget passwords for sites that log me in automatically. I actually have automatic login disabled for Gmail and AIM so I don't forget those passwords and have to get a new username (happened to me a few times). |

So many people rely on their browsers to remember their passwords... then the hard drive crashes and you're screwed. (I keep copies of my list in a few places. ) |

I use simple variations of a concept as my password, so I never have to write them down or anything, just remember "Oh yeah, this is the place that I did THAT with it." I have a good associative memory like that, if I can remember an event related to information, I can remember the information.
And I never, ever use password remembering things. I don't trust them, and I've got an incredibly nosey younger brother, it wouldn't surprise me if he tried to get into some of my accounts if he's angry at me, even though I have a seperate computer. ____________________ There are things I want to put here. Like a cool picture, my 8-bit theatre character test result, my MS and RO characters... But it's 12 AM, and I'm sleepy. |

Boy, it's been a *long* time since we had one of those.
(Not that it's good or anything, but... at least an exploit was found, right?) |

Yeah, this only affects you if you have an all letter or all number password, I think.
Regardless, best to change them anyways.... |

He would have the MD5 hash of your password. It's possible to brute-force a hash to get the original text, but the longer and more complex your password, the more time it will take. So if your password is something simple like "ASDFGH" (which is a terrible password, really) it won't take long to crack, whereas if it's a long complex one like "HJXg6$479Vgfo##@", it's going to take quite a while. (Both of these made up on the spot. ) However if he's bored enough and/or has access to enough processing power, that while still won't be very long.
This is why you use good strong passwords. Hell, if your password is just a word in all upper/lowercase, a dictionary attack may well have it in seconds. And if it's short enough, a rainbow table attack may also have it in seconds, though requiring craploads of disk space. |

Not to mention due to csomething XK and both Acmlm are guilty of he could log in with JUST THE MD5 code. So change your password or die. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |

Why not have it MD5'd twice in the database, and once in the cookie? |

I think MD5ing something twice tends to increase the risk of collision (two passwords with the same hash) because MD5 hashes always have the same characteristics (always 32 characters including 0-9 and a-f). |

Posted by HyperHacker I'm one of those people....forgot my password here! Now, though, I'm taking all your words: Use complicated passwords like j^+2,d"fv`# and you're hack-free, basically. |

Not hack free. Just very possible to take a long time to decrypt your password. ____________________ What FF7: Advent Children Character Are You? |
