That's quite impressive, did you do that by ear or did you find a shortcut?

I used a MIDI as reference. Since I had to convert each track separately to Mario64's format, I didn't want to risk acidentally inserting a extra beat/measure somewhere and having to track it down. I had a few problems entering longer note durations and have not figured pauses yet, so there are some little fills here and there.

Your hack looks better and better each time you update, frantik ^^ I hope the thing will work on the actual hardware, 'cause it'd be great to play it on the NES itself ~_~

I've been in the mood for Othello lately, but the ROM I grabbed for the NES looked rather bland.

So after a few hours, I've basically shined up a bunch of stuff--the title screen and some text is the only thing I can think of that remains to be done :o Maybe I'll actually release a hack instead of messing with a game and forgetting about it :o

Not very original at this time, but I'm doing it anyway, because it's my hack, and I love the nostalgia. I will most likely being doing a couple more SMB1 level styles, and a Zelda II style. But I'm trying not to overdo it, because I want new and original levels. So, it will be a mix of classic levels and new levels.

More detailed graphics.

That is the DNA chip.

As a Mega Man (graphics-swap not coded yet), you can fire your gun (not Mega Buster). You get 8 shots. You can reload by tapping Up on the d-pad, or by switching back to Normal, and back to a Mega Man again. Once you aquire the DNA chip, you can switch back and forth using the Select button. Later on in the game, you may lose the ability to transform into a Mega Man, and you will have to find a new DNA chip.

Dash, in Mega Man form.

The teaser trailer will be released as soon as I finish coding the graphics-swap.

I really like what you're doing so far. But I'm not much of a fan of Mega man ZX series or even to play the game yet. I did play Mega Man Zero a while ago but the game is kinda frustrating.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you. Well, I added something that MMZX doesn't have, the ammo meter. In MMZX, you can transform into MM, but you can fire as much as you like, just like any other MM game. Mine is the first to introduce the ammo system for your primary weapon. It's not really such a big thing though. You can fire all you want. You just have to reload every 8 shots. I added it because to me, it was cool. I'm programming this game the way I want it.

These are the nostalgic levels I'm considering putting into my hack.

I added a "D" under the health bar, and I added a top to the floor (needs a little work). I still have plenty of graphics work to do on this level alone.

While it is fun to play nostalgic levels, I prefer new content.

The sewers looks great by the way. IMO the blue pallet should be green on the floor and top.

Yeah--something to show the depth between the foreground and backdrop :/

Seein' the sewers, and the new look for Megaman, it reminds me how cool a Mega-vania mix would be. Not like the anime-junk of ZX, but more like a mix between Legends and older style Megaman action :o

You proberly might be the first MM2 ROM hacker to do all of this. The great ones never used some ideas that you don't have.

My opinion on ripping out-of-place graphics and levels from other games is already quite clear, so I needn't restate it. At the same time, though, if really must do that, try to be more original by not ripping stages that other hacks already have (such as temples from Zelda 2). Just...ugh. If you want to make a hack with ripped stages, make a hack dedicated to it. It doesn't fit at all with the unstated story or even style of this hack. This was a major irritation for me with Mega Man Ultra: if I recall correctly, it's telling the story between the classic and X series, but Mega Man goes to the mushroom kingdom. What the hell? Totally ruins a hack for me. If you want a hack that does nostalgia, focus on nostalgia, and otherwise don't. I think you'll find the overall product more cohesive and enjoyable.

As for reloading, what's the penalty? Is there a delay while reloading? Are there limited ammunition reserves? If neither, I don't see the point of the feature.

Looking forward to seeing more.

I hear ya. And I kinda agree. It doesn't fit in very well, but I guess it's better to think of that as a cameo. I believe he made MM Ultra the way he did, just out of fun, which there is nothing wrong with that. My original intention of this hack was to make an entirely new game, and have it be a "serious" MM game. Putting in nostalgic levels throws off that seriousness. I need to think about it some more. I already implemented the graphics for the SMB World1-2. It would be a couple hours of work I'd be scrapping. Part of me likes the nostalgia, because lets face it, nostalgia is fun. And I have to remind myself, isn't that the reason I'm hacking, to have fun, and for the hack to be fun? It would only be 4 nostalgic levels. Eight of the levels would be entirely new. So, we'll see. I won't be hacking for a few days anyway. I need a break, plus I strained my eyes looking at the monitor for too long.

The ammo means you can fire all you want. You just have to reload by pressing Up every 8 shots. There is no penalty. You just can't fire when you are out of shots. You have to reload. I put it there for it to be cool, but keep in mind you can only fire when you are transformed. Even the special weapons from the bosses.

Also, there is more ASM features coming into the hack.

1. The Flashlight Ability, some stages will be completey pitch black. You have to hold down and press select to turn on the flashlight. It will light up the area.

2. Plus, I might give Dash a small attack that he can do, when not Mega Man.

Heh, your response is pretty spot on; hacking is all about enjoying what you're doing, with everything else being totally secondary. Criticism can be helpful and yield a better end product, not be what you're looking for, or be just totally wrong! It's up to you whether to listen to it or not.

Regarding ammo, I just think that that will result in people pressing up all the time while shooting. The end result is mindless button pressing with no new strategy or anything of that sort, essentially being a pointless feature; cool, maybe, but it adds no depth and may just irritate people. If reloading kept you from being able to shoot for a short period of time, boss fights or action-packed parts of stages would certainly get a lot more interesting and strategic. Having limited ammo probably wouldn't work well because you could run out during a boss fight and then have no way to deal damage (unless you could kill the boss with that small attack you mentioned as point #2). There are some really interesting possibilities, if you're willing to take the hack a little further.

Of course, do whatever you find fun.

I have a lot of information to reveal.

Incase no one has noticed, the 2 ASM hacks, select button to toggle weapons, and the W tanks, were scrapped from this game. I needed the select button for the transformation and the flashlight. And the W tanks, I needed the sprites to make the DNA chip.

However, these 2 ASM hacks will be re-appearing in the sequel. Yes, there will be one sequel to this game. The name and story have already been written, and a lot of the ASM features are already planned. They are really awesome, and I can't wait to start coding them! But of course, I have to finish this hack first.

The sequel will be the last game. There are already at least 8 ASM hacks planned for the sequel, and they are really neat, and possible to do! And most of them have never been done before! I won't reveal anything until this hack is done, but I'm keeping my plans locked away in the meantime.

I will finish this hack, make the sequel, and then finish Dark Mario. I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I am very excited about what I have planned!
