I'd personally place the mountains much lower, and work on adding more substance to the sky instead.
The background is as close to the Wario Land level as possible but due to a diference in the height of the GB screen and that of the SNES its caused that problem. I need to work on a good cloud set to use for backgrounds as a number of the Wario Land levels make a point of showing off clouds.

Either the moutain will be much lower or i will place a set of trees on the background in the blank space currently there. It is a Wood after all.

Been working on various things... mostly polishing up some odds and ends for the castle levels which I need to start designing. I like using the brick background for castles/underground but the problem is various sprites display behind the background temporarily, such as objects leaving pipes and question blocks and it looks bad. So I have to have sections of blank and sections of brick. the edges between these sections were kinda rough so i replaced the lift rope background graphics with proper brick ends. I added the same style treatment to the top and bottom of the wall graphics.

I also finally figured out how to add lava without removing the existing water elements. I ended up replacing the horizontal pulley rope with lava graphics. To get a red meta-tile I had to sacrifice bowser's bridge but thats ok because I'm not planning on even having bowser in the castles until world 8

The title screen was nice but still had a lot of wide open space.. i like this a lot better

Meh. Haven't posted much here, so may as well give a few updates on my hack to those who haven't seen them.

Staccato Swamp. Yeah, that's the Demon's Crest FG.

Muddy Staccato Cave.

Here's are the two songs that go with them, plus a bonus song that I haven't implemented yet:

Swamp
Cave
Desert

Feedback welcome

If it wasn't for those stone structures in Staccato Swamp I'd think it was Dagobah. It looks really nice though. I'm also loving your screens frantik, that's probably the best looking SMB hack I've ever seen.

Whenever I see Super Mario trodding around in front of absolutlely gorgeous backgrounds, I can't help to think of replacing a cartoon Mario with someone more appropriate for atmosphere, like a humble knight akin to the journeyman from Faxanadu. Although if one did that it wouldn't really be a Mario game anymore, and then a massive amount of commitment might have to made in order to redefine the game as a result. A minor personal lament, I suppose.

Good luck with the hack, and I'm glad you took the effort into making music for it, though I am unable to hear it at the moment.

It appears that I've found enemy coding for the alleged unused enemy in Simon's Quest. I was checking to see which bytes corresponded to which enemies by replacing enemies in the game with other enemies. While doing so, I came across this:

No other sprite animation fits the code, suggesting that this is unmistakably the coding used for the enemy. The sprite only displays correctly in the Laruba mansion, and based on its constant jumping, it seems to be based more on the fleaman than anything. As for it actually appearing in the game somewhere, I've checked through all the enemy locations in the game, and I have found it nowhere, so it seems highly probable that it doesn't appear anywhere in the game.

Not really a rom hack, but I thought this might be worth sharing.

Optomon. Quit tempting me. The other night I was thinking about putting together a Castlevania 2 hacking dream team of sorts. I don't want to do that to all of us.

It looks great though. Even if it's just worked on a little bit at a time it would still be worth it. There aren't enough hacks of CV2. More work on such projects might encourage the creation of better editors for it, too.

In Progress:

This will probably be the biggest ASM project I've attempted.

There's also some custom GFX in there for ya.

(If you haven't gotten it yet, SM64 caps)

The Wing Cap I'd imagine would be one of the easiest as Cape Mario already moves in a nearly identical way. You have to change some GFX and shift the Cape Image to Mario's head after redrawing it as a set of wings.

The other two though would require a lot of work with the physics and environment. I'd be very interested to see this progress.

What I have planned for the Vanish Cap will be quite simple actually. It'll have Mario flash; like after you are hit by an enemy.

Which one is it anyway? The graphical style seems marginally familiar...
