Windows XP does not come with DOS. It has a command line which can approximate some of the functionality of DOS, but it's not DOS. DOSbox is the best bet for running true DOS programs (which I believe Mario Improvement 3 was ... it used mode 13h, as I recall)

The commandline in Windows can more or less "simulate" DOS for the old programs and games, but unfortunately some modern video hardware doesn't gracefully work under Windows while using old DOS programs.

...and Dosbox is more nice to use in a multi-tasking system since the DOS program won't take up the whole screen (unless you want it to of course).

Several years ago, DD made an attempt to port MI3 to Windows. I helped with a few things where I could, but ultimately it was a disaster, and we gave up. This is why other projects have been launched to create Super Mario Bros. 3 editors from scratch...

I'm surprised someone even attempted, because I remember that the author admitted that the source code of his project was... crap.

It's sad that NO one took my notes every time they are going to make an All-Stars SMB3 Editor. At least someone from SMW Central is going to do it after disassemble every game.

But then again. FAILURE! At lease some people know how to edit SMB3 levels using level and enemy ROM offsets like me and Quick Quirly for instance.

I have 0% Knowledge in programming so doing it myself will take 4 years.

Something I did about 7 months ago when I'm doing my Megaman 1 hack.

*video*

To be honest, I really like the entrance effect, but making that continue throughout the battle (and with 1 shot inbetween) does seem really repetitive and easy.

INCOMING!

I know that in the last pic the pipe is a little screwed up, so I gotta fix that. I'm almost done with World 1!

As always, I really like those updated screenshots of your SMB3 hack, KP! Excellent job, as always!

It's funny how the last two screenshots seem familiar to me. I don't know why.

Do you have any ideas as to what the name of your awesome SMB3 hack will be?

Insectduel: Thanks for the name mention. I do like to play around with different things with different offsets and everything, although lately I haven't really had any free time to work on ROM hacking in too much depth - though earlier in the day I did happen to edit a new level in Luigi's Chronicles 2.

I've also edited levels through direct hex editing before, but I only do that on those "crazy" days.

Oh, crap, I forgot to credit Quick Curly on that last screenshot. That level is the one he did for me. Thanks, I appreciate it!

I think I might name it "Heroic Maro, Lazy Princess". I am horrible with names...

No problem, KP. You're welcome.

I like it. Don't say that. I'm probably more horrible with names. I wanted to name my SMB3 hack something other than "Quick Bros.", but I couldn't think of anything at the time besides "Graphical Piece of Crap". Then I named my Wrecking Crew hack "Apocalyptic Explosion" simply because of my obsession with creating new Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and catch phrase to go with it: "I activate Apocalyptic Explosion and destroy the planet". Of course, there is no apocalyptic explosion in the hack. (Bummer. )

Oops. This is the Screenshot thread; not the Useless Facts thread.

Back to your SMB3 hack though, I don't know if you got my last email or not, but I was wondering which other levels you wanted me to work on for the hack?

And as always, best of luck with it!

EDIT!

Very awesome level design. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear it was an actual, unused SMB3 level!

This is an experimental, proof of concept hack written in C which gives Mario the ability to throw fireballs. Its unrelated to the Mario 64 hack ("The Missing Stars") I'm working on, hence why I'm posting on this thread.

The fire direction depends on the current Mario rotation, but since this is affected by automatic camera moves, sometimes its hard to control it. I had to offset a bit the fire position so that it doesn't hit Mario right away (the problem is more the collision with his shadow/ground dust and other small objects constantly spawned than Mario itself).

Let's not be hasty now. It's a proof of concept that still needs work. Right, Messy?

Amazing! You said you wrote it in C... what exactly was SM64 originally coded in?

Yep, right now it's just a quick proof of concept. Mario 64 was coded in C (and probably most N64 games). Anyone interested in writing hacks in C for the N64 should check this tutorial/already set-up GCC/MIPS binutils.

Edit: corrected link. Other N64-programming goodies can be found at the GNU Zelda ROM Tool GoogleCode page, including some nice Gex 64 hacks.
