Xk: Remember the 1994 World Cup? (Guessing no.) I think it was an Argentine player who got murdered after he accidentally scored an own goal, knocking them out of the Cup. Wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened at the club level.)

I thought it was a Columbian and the dude that shot him yelled "GOAL!" for each of the shots fired.

Yeah, it was a Colombian guy. Andrés Escobar, tried to break up a cross against the US in the group stage and knocked it in his own net. Americans win 2-1, move on after taking third (their only win of the group stage, they go 1-1-1 with a goal differential of nothin'), Colombia's out, he gets killed dead. And according to Escobar's girlfriend, the shooter did, in fact, shout ¡Goooooooool! for each of the twelve shots. Douche. Oh, and he got sentenced to 43 years, which was knocked down to 26 years in 2001, then he got released two years ago, after a whole 11 years served.

More notable: Gianluca Pagliuca's rather hirsute Italian ass taking up damn near the entire screen after the camera zooms in on him scratching before the shootout.

Regarding the shenanigans... yeah, but you can bring down stiffer and stiffer penalties on the clubs and hope they keep the supporters in line. (I mean, could you imagine, say, the White Sox being told to play a home series in an empty stadium after the whole Ligue clan whupping Tom Gamboa's arse?) That said, I don't know if there's anything to be done with the more, uhm, passionate ultras.

It might be because I grew up so close to Sweden, or because I've met some idiot Danes in my life, or something or the other, but I really wanted Sweden to beat Denmark. Shame it happened in such a way, though. I think it's great if UEFA punishes Denmark with both awarding Sweden the win and makes them play 0-crowd home matches for a while, makes idiot drunken fans think before trying to assault the ref.

I wonder, though, if UEFA sets the scoreline to 3-0, obviously the goals scored will no longer be counted. However, Poulsen will still have to serve a suspension for his red card, right?

When you Wegis can riot like the Danes then you may bash down on them.

The group stage of the Gold Cup ended today. The QF's look like this:

Canada (A1) vs. Guatemala (B2)
USA (B1) vs. Panama (C3)
Honduras (C1) vs. Guadeloupe (A3)
Mexico (C2) vs. Costa Rica (A2)

Considering Canada had *one* friendly leading up to the Gold Cup (and a crapload of internal problems since it took us almost a YEAR to get a new coach), I'm shocked we topped our group. Beat Costa Rica and Haiti... yeah... and lost to GUADELOUPE. Not even a FIFA nation! I thought for sure we'd crash out but thankfully we did the job against Haiti and there you go.

If we play like we did against Costa Rica, we can beat Guatemala... but then would likely face USA. We're due to beat them one of these days but yeesh. I remember the last time we played them which included an insane sequence where Hirschfeld made two saves and USA hit the post twice in the span of 10 seconds before sending the ball just over the bar. Suffice it to say we were lucky to make it to PK's.

For shame. I was looking for a Guadeloupe vs. Canada final. Guadeloupe because you always gotta root for the underdog. Canada because Bernier in their squad is a Tromsø player, and as such you gotta love 'em (Bernier is technically still a Tromsø player, but he's leaving for Germany in a couple of weeks).

Bah, US vs. Mexico is just boring.

Is it really, Toxic? I mean, you guys seem to draw Barcelona in the Champions League somehow each year.

Yeah, and it's not like Arsenal is going to decay either. Van Persie is no slouch, Fabregas is gonna come back in a big way, not to mention Rosicky must have hit the post 23 times this year.

Call it a post in the excitement of the moment.

I dunno, I think it's too early to say anything, since the transfer window is still open. I'm fairly certain it's gonna be a United-Chelsea race this year too, but if Benitez does the great signings he keeps talking about, Liverpool might pose a challenge. Arsenal is weakened, of course, but they still have some class players, and the transfer window ain't closed yet. Of the rest of the clubs, I see Tottenham as mounting an outside bid for a Champions League spot, with them keeping Berbatov and all.

In the Champions League, Barcelona looks stronger than ever, but Henry does have sort of a reputation for being a choker in the big matches. I thought Chelsea would win the Champions League last year, this year I'm not so sure. We'll have to wait and see what other transfers are done this summer.

I agree about another Man U/Chelsea race, because nobodys really made that killer transfer in the Premiership to really challenge either of them. Chelsea got Alex, who is top notch, and helps them out immediately. I think if Sheva sticks around, he'll do much better, now that he's adjusted to the league. He was looking good late in the season, but then he had that weird groin injury.

Tott'ham can blow me, but Berbatov is soooooo nasty. The man is an animal, a manimal if you will.

As for blowing me, I possibly hate no team more than Liverpool. I was hoping that Gerrard or Carragher or ANYBODY from that team of thugs would leave, but of course not. I really hate them. Like that punk Agger, guy has 0 class. In the words of Eric Wynalda, "I'll club his ass." They have a sweet anthem/motto, but past that, I hate them.

Off topic, but I miss Zidane. Come back to play anywhere, even the MLS for all I care.
