Re: Manchester United/AS Roma, UEFA Champions League, second leg

HOLY CRAP.

Didn't watch the match, but was it as much of a blowout as the 7-1 score might imply, or are we talking balanced (23-21 on shots, Roma 54-46% possession) like the other stats would seem to say? Also, I have to say that I am most definitely dismayed that Liverpool failed to do the same to PSV Eindhoven, but hey, I'll take a 1-0 win, 4-0 on aggregate putting 'em through to the semis.

hilarious Man. U game. I mean just absolutely pitiful performance by Roma. Totti ate his words about English football after that.

As for Chelsea, let's just say I was nervous like you read about. Essien from RIGHT BACK with the screamer by the near post.

Bring on Liverpool baby.

Roma were awful. It was basically United's best performance in a long time and Roma couldn't do anything without their home support. Total embarassment.

Semis are Man U/AC Milan and Chelsea/Liverpool, setting up a possible all-English final...

I humbly suggest you direct your hate towards Petr Cech. I blame the headgear.

I can't. It's not his fault, Reina is sick at PK's, plus Jose's lineup for the shootout was questionable.

...What were the odds we'd get the REMATCH of (in my mind) the best CL final ever?

I gotta think Milan's getting revenge for 2005 but you never know... Benitez is a great manager and Liverpool knocked out Chelsea (AGAIN... same as in '05) so it's quite possible. Still, if I was a betting man I'd put money on Milan - and you KNOW that if they get a lead they'll protect it with their lives this time.

In other news... the UEFA Cup final will see Sevilla defending (!) their title against Espanyol. That's rare these days to see the champs actually defending, but they probably won't be going for a three-peat if they do win... unless they finish 3rd in a CL group or get knocked out of CL qualifying.

And I did enjoy watching part of the Toronto FC game on Saturday and the stadium/fans are awesome and might end up being the best in the MLS, but JESUS. Bet you anything their first goal is an own goal.

I can't wait to see them play NY when I go to see them on the 6th. If they win the game...I'll buy a season ticket.

With the Premier League wrapped up for United and the Serie A for Inter, we have to turn to Spain as the last of the Big 3 to not have produced a champion:

Real Madrid back on top in La Liga today, but they have played one more match than Barcelona. The current top 4 is Real Madrid (66pts/34matches), Barcelona (65/33), Sevilla (64/34), Valencia (59/33).

I'd say Valencia is pretty much out of the race. Even if they win the game in hand, they are still 4 points behind Real Madrid. But it's quite open for the other three. Never liked Barcelona, and Real Madrid is kinda old, so I'm hoping for Sevilla to win. Sevilla might actually win a minor treble this year, what with them being in the finals of the Spanish Copa del Rey and the UEFA Cup.

As for the Champions League, I'm really hoping that Liverpool win it. I think that it's a disgrace that AC Milan is in the competition this year, and I would see it as horrible if they were to go on to win it.

Hey, Sheffield United must really hate Man U for fielding the B team today... West Ham beating Man U + Wigan beating Sheffield = the Blades being relegated.

Then again, if Sheffield decides to seek legal action over the whole Tevez thing... I dunno. Seems too much like an Italy thing.

Derby take on WBA in the playoff for Premiership promotion. Slightly disappointed, as I was hoping for a Wolves vs Saints playoff final, they're both ok teams I'd like to see back in the top flight. Derby and WBA I don't care for.

And grats to Sevilla on winning the UEFA Cup. First team to retain the trophy since Real Madrid in 1985 and 1986 (which was the only other time a team has done that). It's also the first time any European trophy has been retained since AC Milan took the Champions League in 1989 and 1990.

If Sevilla either have a horrible end to their season and end up finishing outside the top four (highly unlikely) or end up going into the UEFA Cup from the Champions League (more likely), and go on to win their third straight UEFA Cup title, they'll be the first team in history to keep the trophy.

In other news, yesterday was the traditional May 16th matches (I guess they can be likened to the NFL's turkey day games) here in Norway. Tromsø beat league leader Lillestrøm 2-1 in front of a full crowd at home, the atmosphere was great and I'm, obviously, extatic about it.

Italian football will never be fair and decent until they do some serious sorting out of the behavior of the fans and the players, and how it is organized.

With all the problems that's been going on in Italy, match-fixing scandals and murdered policemen, they should be penalized much in the same way as English football clubs was after Heysel.

They say European football would suffer from it, but I wouldn't really miss Italian clubs. There's lots of great players in England, Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Scotland to pick from, and their play is a lot more fair.

Yeah, you'd think a couple of clubs getting busted down from Serie A would count as "getting serious". But that's only one problem. Don't know what happened in the wake of Heysel, but yeah, they did manage to clean things up nicely, relatively speaking.

Xk: Remember the 1994 World Cup? (Guessing no.) I think it was an Argentine player who got murdered after he accidentally scored an own goal, knocking them out of the Cup. Wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened at the club level.

SomerZ: Yeah, I wouldn't miss Italian soccer if it went down a notch or two. Do a lot of their clubs still drop eight, nine guys behind the ball and play to bore the ever-loving piss out of non-hardcore fans?

I hate Italy (because of WC 06) but they still produce their fair share of decent players. And it's not like Liverpool plays a wow-your-pants-off brand of soccer either, or most of English players for that matter. Who has any creativity on the England roster? Joe Cole....and then.....um....nobody. And I'm an England fan too.

As for the whole fan shenanigans...what are you gonna do about that? People are still going to be idiots, they'll just find someplace else to do it.

I thought it was a Columbian and the dude that shot him yelled "GOAL!" for each of the shots fired.
