Quick question for you all, what do you like most about ROM hacking?
I like the sheer freedom that it creates with games and the challenge it can give with some games to use their tools etc. - it gives you the ability to learn advanced things. 
Though I haven't done much extensive ROM hacking I can safely say that if I did these two things are the things that make ROM hacking worth it. Plus the fact you are sharing your creations to others for enjoyment and not for profit, too. |

I like it for the main fact it gives a old game new life.
to just mess around for a bit and enjoy the results and of course to share it with others to play. |

I also love the whole rom hacking community itself and the fact it is open to knowledge in most ways and likes to share what it knows 99% of the times. |

I gotta say from a non-seasoned POV that I love the creativity that people show. It's moreso sometimes than the official developers, like in the case of SMW.
Just gotta say that I intended to bump this thread, though it's about a year old. I feel like this was a good thing to say  |

Working around limitations in creative ways, and just screwing around with it in general. I can get a lot of mileage with just a disassembler, a level editor, and FCEUX + TLP. It's generally pretty fun to see how I can make something work with the tools and limitations at my disposal. I always like a good challenge, and game making has always been an interest of mine, but programming can be tedious and difficult for me if it's not basic. With ROMs, though, the game's done for me.
