How about a "Mark forum permanently read" type of feature? Frankly, there are some forums that I just don't care if they have new posts in them, and it would help keeping up with the forums I do care about if I didn't have to see all the other s.

I agree completely. Some of the forums I never go to but it annoys me when I see a "NEW" thingy somewhere, so I have to click "Mark forum read".

I never notice them. My main page seems to have become "Latest posts."

I go to "Latest posts" all the time too ... it's usually 2-3 pages but it's still faster than looking through every forum (and skipping the ones you don't care about), and I don't even need to use "Mark forum read" because everything on that page is new

Otherwise, I still think a "ignore forum" feature would be better (to get it completely out of the way), but a "Mark permanently read" would be easy to do ...

While you're at it can you add a confirmation or something to "Mark All Forums Read"?

That'd just slow people who don't click it accidentally down

It's not a matter of misclicking, it's a matter of instinctively clicking there after reading a list of PMs or a thread in that one forum where it shows up instead of Mark Forum Read.

Then why not ask for the "Mark Forum Read" button to be swapped with the "Mark All Forums Read" button?
Or, an option in profile!
