anyway there not doing anything wrong, IPS patches are NOT illegal... roms in "public forums" are what's wrong... but not ips patches... so that guy isnt going to get anywhere...
This is where you're only partially correct.
Whenever roms in "public forums" are bad or not solely depends on the developers of the game the rom is based on. For example, Sonic hacks as roms in "public forums" are perfectly fine, because not only does Sega allow that, they even decided to give the ROM hackers the opportunity to make them "official" mods for Steam's Megadrive emulator, kinda like how Capcom decided to turn a MegaMan fangame into an official MegaMan game that one time.
In the case of MegaMan hacks as roms, well, we first need to find out if Capcom is okay with that.

That's interesting, but are those just assumptions based on the fact that the workshop exists or did Sega actually stated they were okay with it?

I've always thought the workshop was just a blunder they didn't particulary care for, since after all, you need to at least buy one of their games for it to work.

However, some of the things on it are definitely NOT okay, even if "Sonic romhacks, as roms" are allowed. Since you can just upload a rom, any rom, there are full games on there that have nothing to do with Sonic, or even Sega, as some were not even published by them. And those roms of full games that have nothing to do with Sega are still on the workshop, further underlining it's just a blunder they don't care about.

edit : in any case, because Sonic roms are allowed on the workshop, doesn't mean they're okay with it anywhere else. Like I said the difference is that you have to buy the game for them to work on the workshop. Big difference.

What is the beef between RHDN and BHDN?

Long story... oh, history lessons....

Saw this post so i thought i'd pop in and fill in some details.

The original issue was over a hack called "fuckers quest" if i remember right. It got submitted to RHDN, and then removed because it didnt change enough, i.e. some graphics glitched back to the originals and whatnot. That ticked the hacker off.

Fast forward to about a couple years ago. A community of hackers has developed that specialized in vulgar and crass humor. These "badhackers" still submitted things to RHDN. RHDN operated under the guise that this type of thing was acceptable, but would often find excuses to remove them anyways. They allowed a small cadre of users on their RHDN forums to actively and consistently harass the badhackers, calling them Nazis, making false allegations, and various other nonsense. When the Denizens of Badhackery would defend themselves, they would get warnings and temp bans. It got to a point where whole threads, usernames, and hacks would be locked and deleted entirely. Mods would lock threads and attack users over thing as minor as political differences in threads for the DISCUSSION of politics. One of my favorite examples was a user being allowed to call a hack that was in the process of rearranging the level and boss AI in a game a "Nesticle grade" hack, because said user didnt like that the game now had a vulgar theme.

If you said anything to the mods about the biases they circled the wagons, and attempting to talk to Nightcrawler, the sites owner, he straight up admitted he had no idea what was going on between the mods and the users.

This all sort of came to a head with me... (or at least it does in my head) There had been multiple hacks submitted that did little more than change gender pronouns in many of the Legend of Zelda games. So i decided to pull out the old "i identify as an attack helicopter" meme and created "zelda: attack helicopter edition" where i replaced Link with the helicopter from "Bionic Commando", and replaced the opening text crawl with said meme. It was submitted, eventually accepted, and then removed for a lack of significant changes despite making MORE changes than the aforementioned "gender neutral" hacks. I protested, and afterward flagged the GN hacks, and several others that did not meet the criteria i was being held to.

As this was going on, there were requests for a clarification of just what the rules were. Nightcrawler tantrummed, passed the buck to two members of the mod team, and locked the thread when THEY were asked to clarify. At that point i had written an article based on what had been going on, as the badhackers had kept a thread running on their forums documenting any time a bullshitty issue had happened with a user or a mod at RHDN. After the article was posted, i was banned officially for "abusing the submissions system" and unofficially (according to a moderator) for writing the article. Many of the other BHDN users were also banned. Sometimes for months old offenses that they'd already been warned for. One had a ban message so long it didn't even send the whole thing. One user is currently not "banned" but on permanent probation where he cannot make any post without approval, and has been told the only reason he isn't completely banned is it would cause too much trouble and they know it,as he's involved in a large amount of projects.

I've heard that a lot. Glad to hear some people aren't whiny stick-in-the-muds.

Back on topic from this talk, which is actually pretty interesting (sorry to interrupt previous discussion), but I feel like RHDN could have just used a PayPal or other type of donation system rather than a Patreon page - it'd definitely be safer than publicising donations on a third-party system...

this guy's an idiot really if he thinks he'll take romhacking.net off the face of the earth

technically there is "nothing" wrong. sure the money thing is probably not very good, not going to argue that ... i seriously miss the "bonsai" theme i always used. ...everything "except" the forums no longer loads properly in Internet Explorer anymore because of this stupid default theme.

it was perfectly 100% fine with "bonsai" ...

anyway there not doing anything wrong, IPS patches are NOT illegal... roms in "public forums" are what's wrong... but not ips patches... so that guy isnt going to get anywhere...

Don't use Internet Explorer. It's known to have many problems to developers of websites due to its old standards.

And yeah, IPS patches aren't illegal, it's the distribution of ROMs that is illegal. However, Nintendo may see IPS patches as encouraging people to go on ROM sites, as many people won't use their own dumps and will run hacks in emulators, so uh... :/

Do not give any money to this site or if you have through Patreon, don't give anymore money towards this. I do 100% believe in the site but it is definitely in the wrong hands... You get banned for criticizing the smallest of things and they get real personal about politics to the point where posts get erased and you get blocked from submissions...
