- Adblock Plus
- Colorful Tabs
- DOM Inspector
- DownloadHelper
- Faviconize Tab
- FireFTP
- Flashblock
- Google Toolbar
- IE Tab
- MR Tech Local Install
- Page Title Eraser
- PermaTabs
- Sage
- Splash
- Stylish
- Tab Mix Plus
- Talkback

The extensions I actually use are Adblock Plus, Colorful Tabs, DownloadHelper, IE Tab, Page Title Eraser, Splash, Stylish, and Tab Mix Plus.

DownloadHelper is like VideoDownloader -- it downloads .flv files. The rest are self-explanatory.

I haven't had any serious problems with Internet Explorer either, but still switched to Firefox about 2 years ago and never went back (except when I needed to) ... I haven't even bothered with Internet Explorer 7

I only use one extension (Adblock), but it's definitely nice to have ... then I use a compact theme, and this is all I have at the top:
- Menu bar
- Small icons for previous, next, refresh, stop, home | URL bar
- Tabs

I still haven't tried Opera yet

I use adblock, webdeveloper, and customizeable toolbar buttons.

To download flvs, I have two bookmarklets. One is for getvid, and the other's for videodownloader. I mainly use getvid, but that likes to go down, so I have videodownloader as a backup.

Smart middle click I only use for one site. It makes it so middle-clicking javascript links actually opens the link in a new tab instead of trying to open the javascript command in a new tab.
OMFG thank you. That's like the most annoying "feature" of Firefox.

I don't have too much extensions installed either, but I really adore the mouse gestures extension, epecially the one by the Optimoz team. Cannot think to use Firefox without them since Firebird 0.9- and although Opera introduced them first, and usually being a usually nice browser, I rather use Firefox.

As for the popular extension AdBlock (Plus): I don't have it anymore installed, since this seems to slow down my Firefox significantly. It still has a reasonable speed, but without Adblock it seems way faster for me.
Don't get me wrong, some advertisements are really more than annoying, especially in flash (or even those, which come with sound), but due to the sites I visit I rarely get pages with a crapload of them.
Another great extension is DownThemAll, which helps you to download many files at once.

I removed the home button from my Firefox as I don't have a home page. Why? Because the first site I visit when I open Firefox is different each time, and I'd rather not have the computer load a page that I won't be using every time I open Firefox. I used to have it set to Google, but now I use the Google bar in the upper right-hand corner if I want to do any searching.

It's also a holdover from my dialup days when all pages would take forever to load. Even now, DNS lookups with my ISP are highly unreliable so it can take a while to load a page (not nearly as much as before, but I get impatient).

Well, if we're doing the explainy thingy.... I won't bother with the ones I got after going through Jeshua's post, but as for the ones I had before...

Adblock: It blocks ads.

ColorZilla: Adds an eyedropper thing that allows me to get the color of a single pixel from any web page or image or whatever. Quite handy for web design and digital imaging stuff.

DictionarySearch: Adds "Search Dictionary for [highligted text] to right-click menu. Basically saves me the trouble of changing my search bar to Answers.com just to look up a word.

IE View: Opens page in IE. Had this long before I was aware of IE Tab (I think it predates it), and I was putting off switching. Right now it's disabled while I try out IE Tab.

Image Zoom: Allows one to zoom an image in or out on a web page. Quite handy.

rikaichan and the dictionaries for it: How to put it.... This allows active interpretation of Japanese text on a web page. It doesn't translate the page, but if you toggle it on you can use it to determine what specific Japanese words on a page are by hovering over the first character in them.

Open Image In New Tab: It's like View Image, but in a new tab!

Smart Middle Click: This has already been mentioned. It is made of win and "why wasn't this already built in?"

Tab Mix Plus: I put off the switch to Firefox 2 for a good while, but when my Firefox 1.whatever started acting up one day, I decided to go ahead and upgrade hoping it would fix it. Turned out to just be a setting document that got messed up somehow and needed to be deleted... But now I had Firefox 2. And I absolutely hated how it handled tabs! I figured "surely I cannot be alone in missing Firefox 1's way of doing things" so I went searching for tab-related extensions. Tab Mix Plus did the job perfectly, and so much more.

Talkback: The "ONOZ I CRASH! TELL MOZILLA?" extension. Disabled due to recent increase in crashing (I suspect IE Tab).

User Agent Switcher: Rarely used. Installed when people found out you can access the Wii's "Shop Channel" pages by making your browser claim to be a Wii. Fun stuff.

VideoDownloader: Because sometimes Youtube has stuff worth saving.

Hey guys, just a notice though, don't over do it on the extensions.
I, at one time, had 62 extensions. Okay? Bad.
You need to go through them and see which ones you really DO NOT NEED/WANT.
Too many extensions causes firefox to load up like a retarded child.
The key is to get useful and tiny extensions, if your extension is big, it better be something smart like Adblock or some shit. Okay?

Also check to see if they are OS compatible.

I use different extensions in Swiftfox, just a few different ones. I will show you those when Im in Linux next time.

Anyways, for Adblock plus, pick up the following filter lists;
Easylist
Easylist Element
ABP Tracking Filter
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/

JAB Creations
JamiePlucinski.com
http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions

Good luck!

I've always used IE6, and I've never really had problems with security... I've tried Firefox several times, but there are a couple of things that make me prefer IE for web browsing(or maybe I haven't learned how to customize Firefox properly yet). I never really saw the use for tabs - having the pages separately always worked well for me, and the interface somehow doesn't look as good as in IE6. Also, if I open a new window, it'll start at my homepage, which is interfering when I want to keep the page history intact (if I wanted to go a few pages back, for example). Also, Firefox will always send my downloaded files to the desktop (though I suspect that I simply didn't bother looking hard enough for an option to change this).

I like the tabs better than several individual windows because my taskbar is often cluttered with windows already. Typically, I at least have Firefox, my Gaim buddy list, and a Gaim conversation window open, and if I'm working on stuff, I may have 4 or more OpenOffice.org and folder windows open as well.

I've preferred Firefox over IE ever since I first tried it. The add-ons are one main reason I prefer it over IE, and the tabs make my taskbar much less cluttered. And, of course, I'm less likely to get spyware/viruses/general crap when I'm using Firefox (not like I get much of that stuff anyway). Firefox's in-line spell checking is also a plus.

Actually, the Desktop is where I prefer my downloads be saved. From there, I can open or move the files, or just leave them there for later. If I save files to other locations, I often forget they exist because I've moved on to a different web page while they were downloading. If there on my desktop, I'm reminded that I took the trouble to download them.

SHAZAAM, SOMEONE FIGURED IT OUT!

That is why I use tabs. See, I have my IRC Window, full of tabs. My IM Conversation window, Full of tabs. My Firefox window, Full of tabs. My contact list hides in my tray. This leaves about 3-4 other spots on my windows taskbar, with tray icons hidden by SysTrayX, for things like Thunderbird to check my mail, Paint.NET/PSP9/Photoshop, Directory Opus 8 (With build in panels), and other misc stuff. Winamp Playlist when not tray'd, UltraEdit, Media Player Classic, OpenCanvas, FDM, Super Collapse! 3, The Sims 2.

Same principle in Linux. GAIM full of tabs, XChat full of tabs, Swiftfox full of tabs, space for Thunderbird, The Gimp, gFTP, etc.

I enjoy my space.

THIS JUST IN!!

Well, I once said that I liked IE6 way too much, and that I'd never use another browser.... It wasn't here, but in chat for another website... Anyways... I had actually been considering this for a while, but never really did it...

I've switched to Firefox now.... And I'm actually kinda GLAD I did, too. So.... Anyone have any idea what all this thing can do?

Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/?application=firefox and see.

Tabs are nice, yes. They're like a way of categorizing individual documents/views, like a sub-taskbar. I have my taskbar vertical to get the most space out of it, and still tend to fill it up, so being able to have the 8 web pages, 32 source code/text files, 4 AIM conversations and 12 Photoshop documents I have open at once take up only 4 buttons on the taskbar is nice. (OK, I usually don't have this much open, but it happens.) I can be a bit anal about my screen space, moving things to pixel-precise positions and sizes. I also love having things like Gaim and Winamp in the tray since I don't use them as often.

As for downloading, I do tend to use my desktop as a temporary file dump, but if I know where a file is going to go and I intend to keep it, it's more convenient to just navigate to the right place from within the browser.

Yeah, I often download files to the desktop, especilly .exe installers as they're going right in the trash...err, "recycle bin" after the relevant program is installed.

What I hate is programs that don't recognize "Desktop" as being a folder outside the drive structure of the computer. I have a lot of files stored in folders on my desktop, and don't want to have to navigate through c:\Documants and Settings etc. because some idiotic program is stuck in the Windows 3.1 days.
