Hello all. I was looking at the unused sprites and noticed that two were within the range of the special commands. I picked one - EC - and started to experiment.
I still have trouble believing Nintendo left this out on purpose. This is an autoscroller that starts with a horizontal layer 1 level, then switches to a vertical layer 2 section. I put up a MWL file on my friend's server: http://67.183.146.143/SpriteEC.mwl Try it out. (Make sure the number of screens is set to 3.) ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. Since LM doesn't work on my OS I'll ask, are you saying that the level will scroll horizontally from screen 1 through 2 and on the 3rd screen it will scroll vertically? Could you create an AVI or something to show? |

An AVI? Only if you're willing to download a 563-megabyte monster! (And I'll have to upload it!)
How about an animated GIF? ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. See you around." ~Cpu's last post here |

Or you could, you know, make an IPS file for anyone to use. Go to Level 105, just like joe's similar IPS below.
Also, here are some pictures of the level: Layer 2 Both layers 1 and 2. Layer 1 only actually consists of that one platform. |

The size would be mainly due to the compression (or lack thereof).
An animated GIF and an IPS: http://67.183.146.143/DemoEC.gif http://67.183.146.143/SpriteEC.ips (Go to Yoshi's Island 1) EDIT: Or use Ninetales' Lordlazer, to answer your question on scrolling: This sprite basically scrolls through layer 1 like a normal horizontal scroll, except on the last screen which should have no layer 1 objects. When it reaches here, layer 2 becomes solid and scrolls in. Then the horizontal scroll stops, layer 1 disappears, and the vertical scroll starts. Basically, yes. ____________________ "I'm sick of it and I'm out. See you around." ~Cpu's last post here |

Posted by joe Thanks a lot for clarifying that for me and providing a GIF file. <3 Posted by qwwqPosted by Lordlazer Mac Edit: My notebook is a Mac and my PC's CPU died (or rather the fan died and it slow broiled due to the other 12 fans...LOL I was even able to shut it down properly...), so I only have access to my Mac until I move to my sisters where I can steal my nephew's PC (notebook) for when I need to use Windows only programs. |

It's interesting how SMW has existed for 4+(right?) years and yet someone just now discovers this. Hooray! (or something) ____________________ |

Posted by Xkeeper Quoted for truth. I played the demo, and I have to say, THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME! I guess this means we're one step closer to getting bigger levels, huh? One needs only manipulate this... Hey, that makes me wonder... Could there be an unused sprite that makes the level go from vertical to horizontal? Hey, if there's one to make it go from horizontal to vertical, there's GOT to be one to make it go the other way around, right? |

Hm, we could double the level length! He said there were two (or more?) sprites he found but he only tested one, so maybe (one of) the other(s) does just that! ____________________ |

Um... 1990 in Japan.
Now we just need to convince one of the resident "super" ROM hackers here to implement a left-scrolling autoscroll. ____________________ |

I probably should have mentioned this before, but if you change the level mode in LM to 07, you can edit the layer 2 data.

*McMahon voice* Well, well, well... looks like a small discovery here.
*/McMahon voice* Hmm, maybe I can use this to my advantage... need to do a test first... EDIT: It seems Unused Sprite F1 does the same thing but isn't an Autoscroller... |

Sprite EB also seems to be an unused scroller. Setting it at Y=0 with Extra Info=0 causes layer 2 to endlessly fall straight down very quickly, while Y=0 with Extra Info=1 causes it to endlessly rise upwards. Pretty useless, since layer 2 wraps around and shows garbage. However, setting it to Y=1 and Extra Info=0 activates a completely different, pre-defined scroller...it constantly moves to the right, occasionally slowing down, while layer 2 bobs up and down at varying heights. An unused cave level scroller, perhaps? ____________________ [citation needed] |
