this weekend i'm going to seattle to sakuracon with a few friends it'll be the first anime convention i've ever gone to. i'm not really big on conventions, but i figured it's a good excuse to spend time with friends, so i'm going.
what about you folks? have you been to any conventions or ever wanted to go? i never wanted to because it didn't appeal to me much, but being with (very good) friends is cool. |

Only been to a comic book and a horror one. Was not impressed.
Pack something to clamp your nose. You will need it. |

I went to anime boston last year and it was a blast. Going again this year, cosplaying as Keichii from higurashi and Masaki from SRW.
I didn't really see a LOT of the stereotypes when i went to anime boston. Sure i came across some awkward guy with really horrible cosplay and some horrendously fat people... but suprisngly the place didn't smell too terribly. Maybe I didn't notice these things, but people really seem to overblow the stereotypes when it comes to this shit. Its really fun. You meet a lot of cool people if you just relax and find common ground. As logn as you're somewhat social you'll have a good time. |

I've been to Otakon 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and Anime Central 2004. My main points of interest at anime conventions are cosplay, hanging out with friends, meeting people I know online, and the dealers' room. I like watching stuff, too, but I mainly go for the costuming awesomeness.
I don't plan on any cons this year because I'll be using my vacation time for other trips. Plus, I'm on cosplay hiatus until I get my room all happy and organized. A well-planned work space will go a long way toward improving the efficiency of costume making, especially because I always wind up falling in love with difficult, time-consuming costumes. Zhang He (my best work thus far) took over 100 hours to finish. I made everything except the leotard and wig. Click for a larger photo. There will certainly be more cosplay and cons in my future. I have two costumes in progress (one for me, one for Ogre) and others in mind. |

I actually plan to attend my first con this year, AnimeFest in Dallas, Labor Day weekend.
Because of my natural, brown afro, I plan on cosplaying as the very character whose name has become my nickname with my anime club friends... Nabeshin from Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy, Nerima Daikon Brothers, and a couple cameos in episode 16 of Eyeshield 21. I already have the blue shirt and red jacket, I just need to find a solid yellow tie, a decent belt (I have belts, but they're all D-links), and probably some jeans without cargo pockets (all of mine have them because I like to carry lots of stuff). |
