Slow progress means it's going to turn out very nice, don't worry!

Matal3ao at Romhacking.net is working on a similar project. Maybe you two can exchange notes:

Copy & Paste link to see his thread:
http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,21273.0.html

He has been making a lot of progress on some of the more complicated issues such as how to edit the final palace for example.

The OP hasn't been on romhacking.net for a while but he's been active here I might register on RHDN and mention this site and thread to him unless the OP responds.

Thanks grimlock, actually we've been PM'ing each other for a while now. He's working on the hidden palace and hidden town of kasuto.

Don't worry Termingamer2-JD I'm aware of the other project! Thanks for the support

My map editor isn't going to be updated yet since I've moved on to the sideview editor. I've given Matal3ao some of my notes for the hidden areas, but I'll post it here too for anyone else interested.

0x01df78: the y value to place hidden palace when it appears
0x0083ed: some weird max value

(0x01df79: the y value to place new kasuto when it appears)

0x01df74: the tile type to write to the compressed byte (not visual; just behavioural component)

(RAM) $7F03: the original compressed byte to be replaced

0x8382: y value you need to be at
0x8388: x value you need to be at

$73: current y
$74: current x

(RAM) $516: badguy countdown

Nice ^^ glad to hear about that, perhaps you should ask him to join this site, since you're pretty active on this community, plus we seem pretty supportive of this project here.

I know I do ^^ and so does Aileen Lumina, so yeah

I'm really interested in this project, the overworld editor link at rhdn seems to be corrupt though.

Thanks for the heads up! I've re-uploaded it. Check back tomorrow at RHDN.

Just in case, I've uploaded it here too.

Download the overworld editor!

Update: You can edit the spawn bits now and the object properties too. Things are coming together. The next challenge is to tackle the stupid towns. They're so confusing

Also there is the issue of the automatic templates.
Some scenes in the game read from a special "template" that automatically places clouds, ceiling, or other objects in certain places. The templates are different depending on the currently loaded bank. (aka wilderness vs. towns vs. palace...) There's a chance that I'll just release it without being able to edit this because it's so annoying.

By the way, for you mac users out there, trax has just recently continued work on his sideview editor at rhdn.

Can't wait until you finish the Side View Editor. I have an idea where I want to redo the Zelda 1 map using the side view battle scenes only.
The overworld bird's eye view map will serve as a location marker for Link. I have hand drawn maps somewhere of the whole quest. I just have to find them.

The think the project is called Zelda II: Return to Old Hyrule.

I have always been fascinated with "Death Mountain Area" of Zelda II. I hope that you can finish your Side View editor. I'm sure it will be awesome.

This might be of interest to incorporate into the hack for Mapper upgrading - http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2451/

Hopefully this isn't a letdown to you all, it probably just takes a lot of time to respond and polish the emulators so thyey're well-done on first release.

Also this community needs a good boost in activity so I hope this is soon.

OP- Are you okay for beta testing?

I'm really glad there's so much interest
It gets tedious working on things like this so I do it on and off. But don't worry I'm still here
I'm trying to make my tools as easy as possible to use and include a full blown help file that not only explains how to use the program but also incorporates a simplified explanation of the game's inner mechanics for handling side view data.

micworthy25, I'm sure you'll be able to accomplish what you want with this if you're willing to put in the time!

mrrichard999, thanks for the link. I saw infidelity's patch and maybe I will do something with it in the future!

Termingamer2, Sure, good idea! I think I have enough done to allow alpha testers to check it out! (Can't even call it beta yet haha)

***ALPHA TESTERS***

On that note, if you want to alpha test the side view editor, PM me! Tell me your level of skill in rom hacking too (beginner, intermediate, expert, or super expert (on par with Trax)).

I would want about 5 alpha testers. And I would like a range of skill levels. I'll edit this post listing how many testers I have so far.

Alpha testers so far: 4/5

Can you add the option of having animated tiles in the palaces and over-world like how Snarfblam did with his Editroid program?

It would be cool to have animated tiles. Right now I'm focusing on the sideview editor, and I don't really know how to add animated tiles. If I ever find out, I would like to implement it, but if it gets too complicated with graphics and things like that I might just get frustrated.

Yesssss, these editors are just the sort of thing I've been looking for.

I've been toying with my Zelda 2 hack The Hero's Curse for years now and have not made any headway when it comes to overworld/sideview editing. Everything I've done until now has been purely cosmetic.

I am interested in your Zelda 2 editor because I have created plans for a ROM hack to recreate the Zelda 1 map using Zelda 2 side scrolling. Here is the map of the game. I hope that you can finish the Zelda 2 editor soon. Please don't give up on the project. I am looking forward to it.

Sorry I've been absent for a while! If you'd like to check out my more active thread on RHDN, go here.

HylianFox, I share your enthusiasm I hope the editors serve your needs.

Micworthy25, that is so awesome. I like your sketch. If you're willing to put in the effort and deal with some technical frustrations, I'm sure you'll be able to do it! I'm trying to make the editors easy to use but there will still be a lot of leg work.
