For me, Rahxephon > Evangelion / Dual / all that stuff.

I've seen all of Evangelion like twice, both endings, all that stuff but I think I'll never be able to see what's so great about it.

Evangelion is confusing. I watched it all once and I did not get it... at all. Didn't really care for it either. Some of the stuff was just... meh.

Then again, I've only seen 3 full anime series (I think), and those would be Evangelion, Martian Successor Nadesico, and Dual! (I think Duel!. It was on TechTV way back when and saw every airing of it.). Can't really help with suggesting.
Other anime shows that I have seen though I haven't seen all the episodes of consist of Excel Saga (I got a few laughs from it), Final Fantasy Unlimited (Meh, didn't care for it), and Happy Lesson (I don't know, only seen a bit of it).
From TV when I had satellite TV, Outlaw Star was good. Cowboy Bebop was also good. Don't remember what else though.

Should take a look through this thread and take a look through some anime shows. I've been hearing some things about Haruhi, though, so I may give that a shot if I can find the episodes. Besides, I got the ending theme stuck in my head.

I do not remember a cliffhanger either. I do remember everything being wrapped up pretty well.

You mean other than Big Fire coming out of stasis in the last minute of the last episode, and the announcement of the "GR Project" by the BF Organization? :p

Ah yes I remember. I do believe it is an appropriate ending. Gives the idea that their work are not yet over. That the world will always be in danger. That just one chapter has closed.

Yakitate Japan is an anime about baking bread. AND IT IS SOMEHOW ACTION PACKED. I recommend it.

I really didn't like the movies (albeit cool ideas, themes, and art. But the plot was nothing), but I've heard the series is really good. I should check it out myself sometime ...

I'm keeping the list updated as I watch some of these series so I'll know what to purchase. The good stuff that I want to keep legally. And not have to purchase the bad anime and be forced to keep it.

Dragonball was very good. If you refuse to see it because Z and GT were ass, then you are missing out. DB had a great deal of imagination on Toriyama's part that has been reflected into titles we see today. One Piece, anyone? Dragonball is (if you haven't already noticed) its prime influence.

The GiTS movie(first one) was bad in my opinion. Too short, didn't explain a whole lot of what was going on and was just pretty pictures.

Anyone who doesn't understand the political/humanistic implications in Hokuto no Ken and Gundam(the UC titles moreso) is pretty daft.

Everyone always forgets Matsumoto. And City Hunter.

by the by, read the reviews at animeacademy.com. I agree with most of what my brother(Professor Ender) has to say on there.

Needs more Cowboy Bebop. Bebop stands alone as one of the few shows that actually establishes a concrete world and operates within its own predefined rules. There's no bending of the laws of physics or characters suddenly getting stronger in a pinch, and after seeing so many instances of that, it's something I can really appreciate. The dub's also fantastic.

This man speaks the truth. Cowboy Bebop is the be all end all to anime in my opinion.

I have watched the entire series of DB/Z/GT all the way through. I liked it but it isn't worth owning the entire "trilogy"

Bebop is technically all filler and style.

Koitenshin: You're right, it isn't worth owning the entire trilogy. Just Dragonball is enough. It's the only good one.

Also G Gundam is NOT worth buying. If you're going to buy any Gundam series, buy the original trilogy of movies for starters. Zeta Gundam is a must as well. It's a direct sequel to the original... I could go on and on about Gundam but if you have questions just ask.

Oh and if you're a true otaku(or on the road to becoming one) and genre isn't an issue, I would really think about getting Maison Ikkoku. I've been watching it(almost done) and I have never been so interested to see what happens in an anime ever as much as this one.

I actually find owning G Gundam (dual language of course) to be highly worth it. The English dub was okay but not by much.

Sweet, someone else enjoys this series. =D

Another random recommendation: If you want a cool thriller, Monster is great.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this note. Strongly.

Just because a series uses an episodic plot doesn't mean there's "no plot" or it's "all filler." If there's one thing that really grinds my gears it's people who have become so preconditioned to climactic plots that they refuse to recognize episodic plots as the legitimate (and, frankly, more realistic) method of storytelling that they are.
