Listening to a live webcast now, Steve Jobs announcing there being DRM-free tracks from EMI on iTunes.

30c extra, but.... still... DRM free. I am sure there will be an article in full later.

ooooOOOOooo discussing Beatles tracks now....

Finally they're doing something sensible...I lost a large portion of my MP3 collection to moronic DRM policies last summer. The outdated capitalist model just doesn't work for things that can be easily and infinitely copied.

You're on the internet.

Just say it.

Just do it.

Repeat after me.

Fuck legality.

Well, Steve Jobs wrote an Open Letter in which he pretty much said he wasn't a huge fan of DRM, so I've been wondering if something was up.

EMI have apparently been looking at scrapping DRM for a while too, but when I read about it earlier I thought it was all of that April Fool's BS. No other record label has indicated they are doing the same yet though.

Course, given that I just heard a live webcast with the announcement I don't think it's BS anymore, and hopefully other record labels will come out with DRM-free things too.

Well, as I pointed out offline a whlie ago, tey might've spent who-knows-how-much on DRM, but with a separate rcorder, all you need is a $3.99 cable to defeat it

Then you get a torrent program and let it spread.

It's silly, you won't beat pirates when it comes to music so you have two choices.

Just keep giving plain albums out and let the honest people buy it.

Or spend countless dollars trying to fight a battle you have no way of winning.

Your logic is undeniable. I'm wondering how long until there are explicit taxes of some sort in order to fund the "War against Terror Pirates" in the US. Or perhaps there already are... Eventually, subsidies will have to be payed to artists to keep them producing, at this rate.

Artist will make more than enough monies from concerts and touring.

Most artists do it for the art and not the money. The ones that do it for the money usually aren't as good.

Really, if you want to get down to it, I guess it could just be left up to the artist, but publishing companies aren't really that nice, since they care about money. Not really about the art.

Doesn't most of the money from CD sales go to the record companies anyway and not the actual artists?

Depends on the record company I'd imagine.

Though I have no clue. Record Companies have become more lenient in the last few years, I think. Don't quote me on that, all second hand knowledge.

iTunes got it right; Most people don't want to buy a gouging $25 album at a store for one good track.

Piracy is still illegal, but at least something is being done to make other options suck less.

Wow, that's a very good idea. Thank you, Jobs!

At least Apple came to their senses and made Digital Restrictions Management-free tracks available, albeit at a more expensive price.
